Sooooo, if this actually happens, why not just turn on airplane mode instead of turning the phone off?
That way, the phone can't send any messages, but you can still connect to iTunes and download an update if Apple releases one.

It's safer to turn it off. Because its possible once you receive the squared text, the virus or malicious code is set to run and enable radios if they are off or airplane mode.

Ever notice how when you plug your phone in when it's turned off, it turns on?
Theoretically, they could also implement something to simulate you having plugged your phone in, and it turns back on.

I seriously doubt anyone would go that far, but you never know.

Yet, its still the safest thing to do....:(

there is no money to be made if a cure is found or released. Far more money in treatment of the disease then curing it

Way way off.. most chemotherapy agents are pretty cheap nowadays.
The market for tailor-made cancer cures is HUGE (potentially, every single living human in the world.) and besides there are tons of different pharma or biotech companies, if one decides not to release it, others will come and do so.

the same can be applied to HIV/AIDS treatment/cure dilemma. maybe big pharma would prefer not to release a cure to keep their interest in anti-retroviral drugs afloat, but if they dont then another company, smaller one, will come and do so.. so at the end of the day it might not be in the best interest of big pharmas to hold on the release of a HIV cure just for the sake of antiretroviral drugs.

It's not a virus as they are able to self-propagate.

If you actually read the article it states this vulnerability needs the hacker to send the message and then access your phone manually to pass on to other phones...

i'm a pretty hood/street smart guy with all the ghetto terms.

but I had to google that one.

lol

Wow I can't believe you call yourself hood and don't even know what "lulz" means. "Lulz" is straight from compton.

Example: "2Pac and Biggie were killed for the lulz"

Not necessarily. You would HOPE thats all you would need to do until you got the text again and it would re-infect your iPhone.

I think if the code gets into the wrong hands. They MAY make it to where it bricks your iPhone and Apple would have to create something to bypass the file that is creating the "BLOCK"

I hope it only effects people who use At&t. It would be pretty difficult to take the time to see what T-mobile users are using the iPhone on their T-mobile plan.

WHO is sending this code? From what? Another phone number? We can pick this up and block it :p

Plus I doubt the hackers would go for anyone else other than ATT users as most iPhones have been sold in the states.

The article doesn't say that the exploit is going to be released, only that it's going to be demoed. Actually releasing it publicly would put Miller and Mulliner at risk for criminal prosecution. But I hope that Apple takes this seriously, assuming that these guys demonstrate that it's a real threat.

Here's an idea. How about they just DON'T show the public how to do this?

....and next week we'll show you how to steal credit card numbers and teach you all the tricks and tips for bypassing bank security systems!

I really wonder why Apple didn't effing patch it long time ago when they were informed of the bug.

Probably still figuring out how they can charge for the patch..

And then Apple do nothing. And your phone remains insecure.

And then someone malicious figures out how to exploit this and call premium numbers from your phone, or spy on you. And THEN you'll moan why nothing was ever done...

Or maybe there is no security hole and they're just trying to push Apple into releasing 3.1 today and getting MMS for all :D

How many times do we have to tell you... the MMS delay is AT&T, not Apple. MMS is working for everyone else in the world on 3.0.

Clearly you've been misinformed. This thread has already stated we will have MMS tomorrow, which will coincide with the release of OS 3.1 (shhh....ignore that beta 3 was just released):

Oh, and I wouldn't worry to much about this supposed hijack attempt. Just something else to get OCD about.

Edit: Hmmm...Even when you put the sarcasm smiley, some people can't see the sarcasm.

I don't believe in being charged something that doesn't cost the provider anything, so I disabled incoming SMS on my line a long time ago. Between IM+ and textfree, I don't have any need to pay a monthly fee for anything except the 3G internet.

Can anyone provide a little box or direct me to where I can get one. I am pulling a prank on 20 or so of my friends that have iPhones. I have tried different characters on the iPhone itself but don't know if they would be real convincing. Thanks. :D
