How to increase Time Machine aloted space on External Drive?

The drive is 3TB. Currently it's partioned to give time machine 500GB. I would like to increase that to 1TB. I'm guessing I have to re-partition the drive. Is that correct? So move everything off the drive. Re do it. Move it all back? Ya??

Yes, you will need to reformat the TimeMachine allotted portion of the drive.

There's a good chance that Disk Utility can change the partition sizes without you having to do much. It may take ages though.
