The iMac in my siggy. Right now I'm installing all sorts of packages using apt-get for through Terminal. I guess I need the apple developer stuff to get the KDE working. :p I know, I know. I'm going to go download it right after gnome installs lol. That's the only thing I'm missing is the Apple Developer tools. I'll post later - as for Fedora, I dunno. I kinda want linux on my iBook, but if I can get KDE and Gnome to run on my iBook, I'll be set.

Well, I couldn't get Gnome working for some reason... I installed the bundle ie fink, and on running gnome-session, I get the panels, but nothing appears on the app menu, and double clicking on anything tells me that it doesn't know what to open it with. Even folders!

So I uninstalled the whole thing... which is too bad, I prefer Gnome to KDE, but that's OK I guess.

Heh.

What's wrong with KDE or Gnome? How did you get those other WMs?

I haven't used fink install whatever
I use: sudo apt-get install enlightenment for example. I can now add GNOME to the list. Here lemme take a screenshot of it running. But KDE I expect to have running after 10.3.9 downloads and installs. As for other Window Managers, google it. There are tons. IceWM and Enlightenment are good altenatives. Don't foreget to edit the /usr/X11R6/etc/xinit/xinitrc file and change it to something like: IceWM to load IceWM or enlightenment to load enlightenment. Also, to install Gnome do this:
sudo apt-get install bundle-gnome
you can install mozilla by:
sudo apt-get install mozilla

Nice article, I will have to try this out on my iB 700 one of these days. I have been using linux since 7.5 and currently run Fedora Core on my Dell work laptop with E16 as my window manager.

I have been loving the background BSD on my iBook in OS X, but I want to make it dual boot into YellowDog or other Linux. I will have to try Ubuntu as well as some of the others I was looking at (OpenBSD and the likes). i have a few 10 GB drives sitting around my house for this iBook, so I may try the install this weekend.

:)

I have KDE running now. Let me show you :p

Do you know if people have been able to get E17 working on the Mac platform yet? I am curious, as it looks allot like aqua, and has some similar features (including a dock).

Thanks

By E17 I take it you mean Enlightenment? I have Enlightenment working, I dunno the version, but I'll see if I can get a bundle-enlightenment or that. I'm gonna try a few things and I'll ttyl

I think you're running KDE 3.3 right? 3.4 is really nice, you should consider it. And I believe KDE is covering your desktop with yours, try going to control panel -> Desktop -> Behavior and uncheck "show icons on desktop". Now you'll just have the panel.

It's still very alpha, so I'm guessing you have e16, at least if you've used the standard sources.

e17 = Sweet. Tried the eLive LiveCD on my PC.

It's certainly still the wm with the most Bling Bling. There's even sparkling lights in the background :D Very configurable too.

I keep changing it from rootless to fullscreen so that's one reason why I did it that way. The other is because I barely, last night at 1:00PM did the one thing to where it starts up in a Window.

The KDE I'm running though is 3.1, that's what it comes with. And none of the other Repositories work for Debian packages for Fink. It's all good though. I have tons of Linux Apps. But the bad thing is I can't compile any apps if I needed something. Why? I don't have the Developer Software Xcode for Apple yet.

quick question here. I have my HD partitioned for osx and bootcamp with xp however would like to try out unbuntu and ditch the XP how would I go about doing this? Kinda a newb here thanks everyone
