As a music producer, I am not touching that with a ten foot poll. I won't even it do it a year after GM. But, I will eagerly await it being compatible with all my plugins someday. Have fun folks, looks tasty.

I'm quite certain this will wreak havoc on my audio programs if I install it...and I'll probably be an idiot and try it out anyway...

Does anyone know if the new tab and share button etc locations are a bug? On my safari the are directly beside the search bar leaving a large gap to the right. It looks completely wrong. Is anyone else having this

This sounds irrelevant but this beta utility will NOT work on any macOS older than Mojave. On high Sierra, the App Store will pop up but offers nothing. When official release is out I am sure upgrading would not be a problem but for now, there’s no path to upgrade to big Sur beta (or any future beta of any future macOS that is supported) unless the full macOS install image is downloaded somehow.

The translucent side bar taking the background shade is gaudy and really disturbing to look at.
The heavy shadows on Messages, FaceTime and Mail icons stick out like a sore thumb. They look really distracting, I have to hide my Dock.

What’s the build number? Wondering if it’s the same as dev beta 4.

I'm gonna install Big Sur on my 14 year old Apple Seagate 80 GB hard drive from the original Mac Pro. :)
Maybe this was a mistake... I downloaded the 12.3 GB installer dmg in 5 minutes, but the install to that ancient hard drive is taking just about forever....

Had to do it though. It just seemed so perfect to install the first transition-to-Arm OS on the first transition-to-Intel tower's drive.

that seems to be the default but you can customize it

I installed on a newly-created volume on my Catalina 2017 12” MacBook.
When I’m ready to zap it and move over to a public release in the fall, should I first unenroll my MacBook (via Catalina) from the Beta program, then just delete the Big Sur volume?

Any user who requires a detailed walk-through in order to figure out how to install the Big Sur public beta should not be installing the Big Sur public beta.

I wholeheartedly disagree. When I first started to learn beta testing I had a hard time figuring out what to do or where to go. We need people to help test these pieces to find and fix bugs. I’ve already submitted like 4 bug reports for iOS 14 so far. Let’s make this software work well and be less buggy.

Nope, I usually wait until January at the earliest. I have iOS 14 on my iPhone this year because I'm stuck at home so why not? Usually I only install betas on my iPad Pro. My Mac puts food on the table.

Am facing minor issues like not able to open maps, but overall the speed of the system has not been affected, which sometimes happen with software upgrades.

Is Big Sur really not compatible with a late 2013 iMac? I have a 1TB Fusion Drive and 8GB RAM.

Seems like I would have more horsepower than a 2013 MBA.
It's about compatibility, not power.

Frustrating as that can be, there are usually workarounds if you don't mind sacrificing some minor features and doing things the unsupported way. That 2009 Mac Pro in my sig can run Catalina thanks to http://dosdude1.com/software.html and will most likely run Big Sur. But there are reasons to just stick with what's supported; the only reason I force-upgrade is for Xcode.

I am a developer, but I always wonder is there any difference between the developer and public betas? Anyone here know? Thanks.

Agreed. No one should try anything they’re not already experienced in. Otherwise they might learn something, and we can’t have that. After all this is high stakes. Think of everything that could go wrong if people try putting some shaky new software on their email machines and it isn’t perfect. Our perfect utopia could crumble!

wtf people, do what you want, it’s only software on a computer, you’re not rewriting the UN charter or something. You’ll get good at formatting & reinstalling, and begin to learn how your computer works.

Public gets the beta after things are stable. Developer beta 4 and public beta 4 are essentially the same. It’s just that the public beta is released a day after the developer beta, just to make sure there is nothing catastrophic.

Somebody please check the column view in Finder. Has Apple finally fixed “Right Size All Columns Individually” option, so that columns automatically resize depending on the width of the folder/file name when browsing through various folders?
Right now all this right click feature does is adjusting the width of only one column ones and than that width remain the same for all other columns even if nested folder has very short file names in it.

Browsing files in column view in Finder has been a disaster for years now. ForkLift mostly does the job but at some things it is not good enough to be a full Finder replacement. It is simply time for Apple to fix this completely broken feature.

I have been reporting this throughout the whole beta test period of Mojave and I think once or twice during Catalina. The only hope for this to be addressed is to make some of the big youtubers / tech sites mentioning it and hopefully the right person from Apple sees this.

This issue has been since day one when I started using Macs in 2013 and basically covers:
OS X 10.9 - Mavericks

OS X 10.10 - Yosemite

OS X 10.11 - El Capitan

macOS 10.12 - Sierra

macOS 10.13 - High Sierra

macOS 10.14 - Mojave

macOS 10.15 - Catalina

Sometimes I wonder if anyone at Apple actually does the job on their Macs, you know - like working with tons of files. 🤦‍♂️

I don't think this is a bug, but the way this feature is intended to work. At least that's how it has worked for as long as I can remember (at least OS X 10.4?)

The only reason I find myself here is cuz I don't have a developer account for myself and I thought this site had some ways to get it for free
what a bust

Installed this yesterday on an external NVMe drive attached to my wife’s MBP 16. I cleared a volume on the NVMe and did a clean install of Catalina there. I restarted from that Catalina volume — and was pleased it did NOT mount the internal SSD. There was a permissions alert box that popped up — and despite my reflex to click through — I stopped myself in time and declined it. I wanted this NVMe to have no rights or access to anything internal.

Once I restarted from the external Catalina, the Big Sur install was easy and I’ve enjoyed a couple of hours playing with it. I actually like the new aesthetic for the most part. And I like knowing that when the drive is disconnected, my wife’s machine will be as if my curiosity about all things shiny and new was never allowed to run it’s course.

In addition to the aesthetics, I think the iPhone like control center functions are great, as well as Safari’s new anti-tracking features. More to come when I get more time to mess around.

Now just waiting for an enterprising person to help me get this running on my 2009 Mac Pro that’s currently on Mojave.
