Does this look like an issue to you? Would not happen with old notch

Right, so if you’re bothered by it then get the older iPhone, simple.

Btw that don’t happen if you view the video via safari, also you don’t mention the four outer corners are also cut off (does this not bother you?), again via safari this don’t happen.

What app is that? YouTube? Play the same video on YouTube’s website using the browser and it doesn’t happen.

Also on the YouTube app if you play that same video using the 13 pro instead of the pro max the notch also gets in the way. YouTube just isn’t great with making their app work with either the pill OR the notch. That’s on the YouTube developers.

Does not happen by making the video smaller? Lol xd you need to test with 18:9 video, 16:9 not affected.

GOOD MORNING!

MKBHD decided to upload his videos to YouTube in the 18:9 ratio (relatively recently) to help fill the screen of certain iPhones and other mobile phones, it's a wider aspect ratio. You never noticed before because our older iPhones can take advantage of 18:9 and I'm sure his analytics showed that most people watching his videos were doing so on mobile.

He, and many other YouTubers are now considering switching back to 16:9 (standard wide-screen ratio) to combat this.

This isn't a dynamic island issue. This is an issue that is solely dependent on what aspect ratio the YouTuber uploads their video in. You're basically just watching it wrong. Or rather, the YouTubers are uploading the video wrong, in the wrong aspect-ratio.

P.S. 18:9 is NOT a normal or common aspect ratio, so hopefully our Dynamic Island will help sway these YouTubers to using a NORMAL aspect ratio of 16:9.

Again, GOOD MORNING.

Like I just said on another thread. Notch,Dynamic Island these are you’re iPhone choices. Only other option is a Android based phone.

So if you want iOS. Currently there’s notch and dynamic island. Full stop, case closed

You forgot the iPhone SE — no notch, no PWM…

I loaded the same video from Marques Brownlee via safari and that’s how it plays, no notch, no corners cut off, again, it’s fine via safari.

Exactly, that issue is simply on YouTube’s developers to fix for the way the app scales videos on certain phones. Sadly I don’t think they will since on the regular size 13 pro with the notch it also gets in the way of video.

Another solution, just use iPad. Treat iPhone as an overpriced smartphone camera that will never surpass dedicated DLSR. Problem solved. Why? iPad has no notch or any of those “island” bs.

The space difference is basically no different and allows for at least some kind of interactive touch motions with many apps. It’s cool and actually useful. Notch simply wasn’t

Now that you know the issue is the YouTube app (from actual owners of the new phones) all this is a non issue as it works fine via Safari the way Apple intended it to work.

It’s not Apples problem if the YouTube app does this, it’s YouTube’s problem and down to them to fix it.

That’s his channel on the YouTube app. I tested a few movies when I got the 14PM John Wick 3 and The Rise of Skywalker. They look great.
My cable TV app looks great also. So any media I may watch on this phone is good to go.
If I’m traveling and want to watch a movie on say a long flight I use my iPad 100%.

The perfect solution is whenever under display camera etc is available. I’m sure Apple is working on it. I would guess they already have prototypes of it. Rumor has it that iPhone 16 may have it.

Having owned legacy Android devices, I quickly became so accustomed to the notch that I didn't notice it. It's called visual occlusion.

The pill cutout is clean, uniform and centered. The screen display percentage on the iPhone 14 Pro devices is greater than the iPhone 13 Pro devices.

Over time, visual occlusion will occur and the focus will be the additional functionality of the Dynamic Island will be utilized and more appreciated as more apps make use of it as its a way to multi-task.

I could understand the issue if it were just a cutout with no UI functionality. As the FsceID and camera components get smaller, the cutout moves higher and gets smaller until it is gone several years from now.

So the new pill shape notch is lower than the old notch, which means the effective area is smaller. The area above the pill is bigger than before but it is hard for any app to use it. How to deal with it?
Well the vertical space and resolution being taller and higher basically makes this a non-issue.
You’re losing what… 8 vertical pixels I think it is?
On a screen with 460 pixels per inch?
It’s barely an issue, and once apps are fully updated and optimized, you won’t even notice.
Plus if you’re watching video in 16X9 (as you should be) the island is completely blocked out either way.

There will have to be multiple versions of apps now to deal with both the notch and pill.
There is already multiple versions of applications to deal with:
4.7 inch 750P displays
5.5 inch 1080P displays
6.1 inch 750P displays
5.8 inch 1125P displays
5.4 inch… I don’t remember the resolution displays
6.1 inch 460PPI displays
6.1 and 6.7 inch 120hz 460 ppi displays
And now they have to update apps for the new phones resolution.
Not a big deal, nothing that hasn’t been done before

Whenever I get a new phone, I make note of the things that I don’t like about it and commit to trading it in when the next iteration comes around if what I don’t like is better or at least different. I’ve adapted every time and generally end up keeping phones for 2 - 3 years. Of course this, so far, has been on Samsung and Samsung phones just have the pinhole. I didn’t like the pinhole and now I don’t even notice it.

As I prepare to move over to iPhone (most likely), I have been thinking about the things I don’t like. I am not sure about the island. I might like it or hate it. It will be different for sure. I don’t completely understand why apple couldn’t go with a pinhole as well but at least they are doing something clever and useful with what they have. I have a MacBook Pro with a notch and I have no idea why it is there.

I think that the thing that is going to annoy me the most with the pro max is the Borg like camera appendage on the back. That is the thing that is on the very top of my dislike list. If I cannot adapt to it, I am sure that I will get an amazing trade in value for a new S23 in February/March. Or I could wait it out and see what the iPhone 15 looks like. I understand brand loyalty and I see how some here fiercely defend apple and how those on xda-developers defend all things android. I have no brand loyalty and use whatever works for me. Brand loyalty is just a company’s way of locking people in and I refuse to let a company manipulate me that way.
