Step 1: Jailbreak

Step 2: Install BiteSMS

Bite has this feature, plus an infinite amount more. In a world where jailbreaking is free, legal, and does no harm, there is no reason not to jb these days. Just installing bite will not slow down the phone, or cause battery issues, or whatever fear inducing ideas anyone might have.

I'd rather not go out and back in. Can't believe Apple doesn't have a solution for this.

One reason not to jb....I'm on the latest update and I don't want a tethered jb.

The iPad keyboard has a "hide keyboard" button, that would be a simple fix...they could easily slide over the ASDF line to the left a bit and fit a small "hide keyboard" button in there....

Is there a cydia tweak for this ?

In the yahoo messenger app I just tap the screen & the keyboard goes away

Is there a tweak like that for the SMS app

Scroll through keyboard

One way besides the "edit" view is to simply drag "into" the keyboard to scroll up.

More specifically, you place your finger into the previous messages area, but you don't have to keep it there to scroll. You can swipe your finger down "through" the keyboard to scroll up and down as long as you don't raise your finger back up. Seems to work pretty well for me when reviewing the past few messages.

Pay it forward! :)

That still leaves you with a tiny viewing area though :(

In the new iOS 5, you just put your finger on the spot where your new (unset) text message is being displayed and scroll down. Like "grab" the space you are typying it and move it down.

I have been waiting for this for so long! Finally, lol, love that new iOS 5!

I don't know why this is so difficult...

It's because Apple's product is nice and cool but not practical to use. Android has the "hide" key on the keyboard. That may be un-cool in the Apple world.

i the iPhone 4s or the with the iOS 5 update you just slide your finger down from convo to keyboard and it will hide.

Yes, there's a way to drop your keyboard while reading texts in iPhone 4s without backing out of the message.
If you're at the most recent message at the bottom, pull your message screen down and pull your keyboard down at the same time. The keyboard will drop down. Hope this makes sense.

it's true ... the keyboard was driving me nuts too, no room to read your messages:mad: .. then one day i just slid my finger down the screen and bingo ... no more keyboard :)
