She got a good new job so I bought her a mbp 13" mid 2012, and basically on her first day a co-worker had a newer 15" model with retina display and she's been kinda bummed out about it.

So I was wondering what I could do to make hers faster? I would like to get her the newer one but I didn't realize she would need it and how slow the mbp 13 inch is...if I just add 4gb ram and make it 8gb will it make a good difference? Or should I ebay the 13 and buy a 15?

i5 2.5ghz
4gb ram
intel 4000

Buy a samsung 840 EVO and replace the HDD with it. Would make a huge difference, and samsung has very good reliability on their SSDs.

Sorry for the late replies, been busy.

She doesn't do any rendering, mostly just excels.

I'm hesitant to get an SSD because I bought a crucial SSD 2 years ago and it failed recently so I'm kind of wary...would it help just to put in a 7200 RPM 2.5" HDD? But 100$ for a 240gb crucial SSD is pretty legit, I paid almost 3 times that for mine.

And as someone stated earlier, it is a non retina, so probably not worth upgrading because no matter how much 'faster' we make it, all someone with a retina MacBook has to say is "Oh, well I got the Retina."

SSDs have come a long way since then, as long as you go for a reputable brand like Samsung. If it's a 2012 model though, resale value should still be pretty good if you want to upgrade.

I'm gonna sell her MPB on ebay, picking up a MBP Retina 15.4" 16gb ram with 512gb flash storage from a local mac store, it's actually a bit cheaper than the apple store.

Sounds like she's jealous that a co-worker has a nicer laptop? Only way to fix that is to get her a retina. No way I could go back to a non retina machine now. They look so ancient in comparison.

I agree, the rest of you are being more polite but the reality is if you get a mac you gotta get the right one otherwise people are always gonna look down on you and make you feel bad.

SVT, are you a mustang man? Or are you SVT Raptor? I recently got a 2013 GT500 - That's Shelby... But I did own a terminator few years ago (2003 SVT cobra, s/c from the factory + ton of mods done by me.)

You said it yourself. Get the right one, not the most expensive one! Else we would all be using mac pros ;)

I've owned a few Cobras first was a 93 then a 95 and a 96. I moved to a 03 Terminator and had that for a few years and now I have a 02 Lightning with a 2.3L Whipple on it. I will most likely get a Raptor as well.

I'm surprised that anyone would make you feel bad based on which mac you are using. It's only a year old mac, and there are advantages to the non-retina like having a dvd drive, ethernet, firewire, and a kensington lock slot. A new SSD and 8 gb of ram would make it as fast as a 13" rmbp for what she uses it for.

Regardless, enjoy the new mac! I'd actually recommend getting the base 15" for her needs. It looks identical on the outside, but her tasks will never engage the 750M anyway. 750M is for CUDA rendering and high-intensity tasks like gaming.
