Like what was the problem with the old Photos app that they felt it's necessary to change it?

Hope the reason for changing wasn't because some engineer or manager needs to pad their resume/achievement log for performance reviews.
If my understanding from the communications over the Summer when iOS 18 was in beta testing, the changes were made so that folks would better see the New Siri style photo albums and AI changes. It was all to push AI.

And here we were day dreaming about the impossibly low opportunity for Apple to revive Aperture one day… heck no, if this photos update is any metric, stay away from reviving anything.
Yes, please revive Aperture :). I moved to Lightroom, and tried many other applications. This is including RAW Power that some people say filled the void left by Aperture. I now have two libraries, one mostly unmaintained in Apple Photos and one fully maintained in Lightroom.

Setting a non-Apple app as your default photo gallery, or any other app category, is not making it like Android LOL

I could do that with Windows mobile 20 years ago. It's not like it's some big exclusive feature, yawn.

I don't understand the mindset of wanting to limit other people's choices. Why do you care, at all, what other people do? If you don't want to change your Photos app then don't.

IOS18 Photos is by far the worst thing Apple did in the new OS. Completely confusing, zero useful new features and now I cannot find anything I used to find easily. The product managers on the Photos team must be complete fools?
No, Apple Intelligence™ is the worst thing, at least in most forums. (Seriously, replace "photos" here with "Apple Intelligence" and it reads just like those complaint posts!)

Apple wouldn’t have made the effort to redo the app without a plan to monetize it. Mark my words you’ll be soon paying for a Photos+ subscription in order to use the AI tools.

Exactly. Them ****ing with the photos app made me start to think about going back to Android. It’s not the only thing but it just annoyed me so much that I remembered if this was Android I could just use another photo app.

All apple had to do was nothing. There was nothing wrong with the old design.
My mom recently switched to iPhone and was surprised at the lack of features in the photos app, like a need for a third-party app to create collages. I explained how it's actually better for us to spend more money in the AppStore so Tim doesn't need to make the software teams work.

Am I the only one who isn’t bothered by the new photos app? If anything, I like how you can scroll through your albums on the same screen as your library without having to press a separate tab. It actually makes it easy to drag and drop recent photos into the album you want, which is a lot fastet than opening a photo, clicking the share sheet icon, pressing “add to album”, and selecting the album you want to add it to.

Tbh I haven't even noticed much of a change with the supposed "new" photo app. Am I doing something wrong?

“The new ‌Photos‌ app isn't all bad. Search has improved quite a bit, and you can search for really specific parameters like "plants in Florida" or "Eric in a blue shirt."

What do you think of the ‌iOS 18‌ ‌Photos‌ app? Are you getting used to it? Let us know in the comments below.”

Yes, the new Photos app is pretty damn bad. It reminds me - once gain - just how clueless and arrogant Apple really is. No, I am not getting used to it… and I am considering solutions outside of the Apple ecosystem.

What point is that? The point that people throw out terms like, we, us, the majority; speaking for communities of people that doesn’t agree with the point? It’s a tell on these forums.
The point that people get up in arms about criticisms of an entity.

Confession time. I set a bit of a trap knowing someone would come along and take the bait and prove my point for me. You’ll notice I (very carefully) didn’t refer to all Apple users. I talked about defenses of decisions from a diehard subset. I also didn’t refer to any individual decisions, nor did I say anything about proportions relative to the base rate.

Passion is good. Objectivity is good. Emotional reasoning is not.

My claim was, simply stated both then and now, that there are hardcore Apple fans who appear to think or feel that the company can do no wrong.

When someone feels compelled to double down with defense of defense — and that’s really what’s going on here — while trying to prove a negative…well, to use your word, that’s definitely telling.

Apple has not written good software in years. The brain drain in Cupertino must be profound.
You aren’t wrong. Apple has been making questionable at best, and boneheaded at worst, software decisions for a long time now. Their services especially (iCloud, etc.). You don’t realize how bad it is until you use a competitor’s product and then you go, “Wait, this makes so much more sense this way. Why isn’t Apple doing it this way?”

I just went through my photo app and it’s not that bad. But it’s bug ridden. I had Markel my pets and they’re all unmarked now. I thought AI would come handy so I opened a photo from my pet and thought I could search for similar photos. No it can’t 🙁

Then I looked at some older movies I made with my iPhone, half of them aren’t working anymore 😣

I also went to New York a while ago and took some pictures with my normal camera, imported those in an album and now the album is empty.

I also miss the option when showing all photos to scale them in a very tiny overview. That’s gone? Or am I missing something?

Where is the AI function to search for the same objects/pets/person in my entire library?

If it wasn’t that bug ridden and didn’t corrupt my older videos I might have liked it after a while.

I hate it that it’s corrupting older video files. 🤬

Because that's not how iOS works and you knew that when you bought it.
Well I’m happy I’m living in the EU which is forcing Apple to accept similar apps instead of forcing their own. Now we can choose which browser we want and soon all the other apps too.
