Hasn’t anyone developed a better photos app than Apple’s version?
Maybe you can curate a list

Apple has not written good software in years. The brain drain in Cupertino must be profound.
It’s truly sad when Apple was a synonym with the pinnacle of design and intuitive and fun user experience. They’re very unfocused today and changing things for the sake of change and neglect things that needs attention. Also bugs, dropped frames, etc. I don’t remember that I had to restart my device to fix things until maybe 2013.

With iOS 18, Apple overhauled the Photos app, introducing a new, unified design that did away with the navigation bar and merged everything into a single screen. It marked the single biggest change to image management since the launch of the Photos app, and it's been controversial with some users.

There's no returning to what the Photos app used to be unless Apple decides to roll back the changes, but there are a few tweaks that can be made to make it easier to get used to the new layout.

First, if you haven't done so already, scroll down to the bottom of the Photos app and tap on Edit. From there, make sure all your most used Photos features are at the top of the app. In this section, you'll find Recent Days, Albums, People and Pets, Memories, and Pinned Collections.

Pinned Collections is a little confusing because it's a second customizable interface that has many of the same options as the main app, but think of it as a folder in a folder. It can be useful to put up top and add your most accessed utilities to, such as screenshots or specific albums.

You can rearrange the sections of your Photos app by dragging and dropping to reorder, plus you can hide any of the collections. If you don't want to see Featured Photos, Wallpaper Suggestions, or Trips, for example, you can uncheck those so they won't be listed in the app. If you don't like that redundant Pinned Collections section, you can hide that too.

If you haven't spent a lot of time fussing with the Photos app, you might not know about the filters. In the full Library view, which you get to by swiping down, tapping on the arrows will show you the filters option. You can filter for photos, videos, edited images, screenshots, and favorites, or sort by recently added or date captured. There are also options to weed out screenshots and Shared With You images from your main photo library.

The new Photos app isn't all bad. Search has improved quite a bit, and you can search for really specific parameters like "plants in Florida" or "Eric in a blue shirt."

And why would you locate access to passwords four levels removed from the home screen?

iOS18 is worse than Windows.

I can deal with the Photos app, but the new mail up is beyond bad.
You can turn off all of the mail enhancements but not with photos. I have no use for Days, People and Trips but there they sit at the top of the panel.

What do I think of the new Photos app? It’s garbage, plain and simple.
It’s difficult to use, it’s convoluted, and it’s frustrating as hell to use.
I have begun looking for another photo management software to use. Apple has been making photos worse with each new release since they abandoned iPhoto.

There was a huge change in Photos app this year. But by customizing and rearranging everything, I am satisfied with the Photos app now. Took some time to get used to it

I hate padOS photos the most. Just resting my finger on a pic will trigger the sticker mode or copy. I just wish  would have an option to disable everything in photos

No it is all that bad, the search feature has nothing to do with operating a slideshow, you can’t control the speed, I don’t want your music.p, go back to rabbit and turtle speed options.
In Apple discussion group there are thousands of complaints since iOS 17 was replaced, so did Photos App.
I’m sure this holsey’s on many will be surprised with the STUPID change.

You can easily turn off those categories, if that's what you're talking about.
Why not have the option to turn them on, rather than turn them off? I just had to google how to get rid of the annoying icons in front of each email.

Well I’m happy I’m living in the EU which is forcing Apple to accept similar apps instead of forcing their own. Now we can choose which browser we want and soon all the other apps too.
You've always had that choice

I'm definitely not an Apple apologist. But believe it or not, I actually like the new Photos app and don't see the problem. The default layout resonates with how I use the app, with Recent Days, People & Pets, Memories, Trips etc. And it was easy to find out to modify it, for example I wanted Media Types higher up. Then the Pinned Collections which can be further customized. And finally the search feature, which finds photos quickly with even the most obscure combination of search filters.
My only complaint is that the search symbol is too small and too far away to reach easily while operating the phone with only one hand, because half of the time my fat thumb hits the Select button instead.

So I give this update 5 stars, and I am not apologizing for it.

I never voice out my disappointments with iOS/Apple unless it is something I cannot ignore anymore but yeah, the new photos app SUCKS soooo bad. I have 100k+ photos since iPhone 3 and I love using photos app but this current version dont make me enjoy looking/searching for photos.

I basically turned off everything save for "Recents", "Albums", and "Utilities". It's fine now: I'm a simple cat.

Bring back the "Places" album so I can visually search by exact location and sort by date. How do people who travel all over the world manage the new Photos?

When viewing your photo, simply press the info button, then press Add a Location...

I don't understand. Searching is now very easy to use, and is a huge improvement.

Hate hate hate it. Like why replace the word edit with three bars? What are all the options at the bottom instead of the top of the screen. Hate the photos it decided are ‘featured’ Who decided which people I’d want to see more of. The only thing I do like is when you are in edit, it’s easier to switch between different operations
