What I was told, TMobile has an iOS app in development for eSim support. Unfortunately the TMobile rep couldn’t tell me when it would be ready.

This sounds right for T-Mobile but I still honestly can not understand why this still isn't ready. Apple is def responsible for not involving their carrier partners earlier in the development and roll out but TMO also for being so incredibly tight lipped about what is going on, especially since they were so proud of supporting eSIM after the Sept announcement. They obviously knew it was coming but then what? No one in the company was allowed to test eSIMs or given any specs until mid-Sept?

About 10 days after I received my Xs (launch date) I left for a 3 week European trip. I had missed the part where the eSim was not yet ready ("Real soon, now") so was a bit disappointed as I was hoping to use a local SIM for data. This was actually one of the reasons I upgraded to the Xs. No big deal, put the local SIM in my backup phone and tethered when I needed it.

I have another trip coming up in December and was hoping the eSim would be ready by that trip. I guess not. Oh, well.

TruPhone is up and running for data only. I set up an account to test and it was super super easy to add it to the eSim line via the app. It's certainly not as cheap as using a local PAYG but it is what it is at the moment. If you need it for travel then this is the way to go at the moment.

Anyway, all carriers should be this easy to set up on eSIM and if TMO is really working on an app, I hope it works the same way.

Thanks, I'll take a look. My backup plan is a GlocalMe MiFi that is about $30/3GB. It is an extra device but it doubles as a power bank so not quite so bad.

Using Dual SIM with an eSIM
T-Mobile will support the eSIM technology that’s part of the Apple iPhone XS, XS MAX, and XR. We’re currently working through final technical details with Apple and should have a solution for you no later than the end of the year. Stay tuned for more information.

And looks like only prepaid eSIM from TMO per this article. This is a forking mess. If this holds, I guess I'll switch back to AT&T since the places I travel don't support pre-paid eSIM. What a mess.

For now, it will only support adding prepaid plans to eSIMs; the thinking seems to be that it will be used for inbound roaming and secondary lines, with customers still going into stores and getting physical SIMs activated for primary lines and family plans.

Why would anyone want to move to the eSIM? What if you want to change phones in a pinch?

Why would I need to change phones unless it was broken? In that case, I'd be getting a new phone and you can just switch by scanning a QR code.

Anyway, everyone has different needs. My 2nd #is a UK carrier and since most carriers around the world don't use eSIM, it's easier/better to use the physical slot for such uses internationally. So the primary line is on eSIM.

I switched to Verizon today as their app is super easy to use and set up eSim with. If TMobile gets their act together, or gives us ANY kind of information, I'd come back. But if they are only allowing prepaid then I gotta go elsewhere.

Hmm, Well. I contacted t-mobile through their website Chat, and asked if they would register my EID. The guy said he would try. I gave him my EID, and soon after got a text. I followed the instructions here and did a reboot and now I am on eSim. The chat person was very friendly and got me going quickly. Thanks to the folks here for providing the instructions.
