As odd as this may sound, I've accidentally found that a boner helps keep you from blacking out. Hope for a hot nurse. ;)

Now that I've had time to think about it, a boner might lower your circulating blood volume further, increasing your chances of passing out. Unless, of course, we are talking a small volume of blood.

:p

Which is why he prefaced his post with "As odd as this may sound" :p

Who knows...maybe the brain knows to expect less blood when you have wood so don't feel the effects when giving blood.

Okay. I'm alive. I fell, and my vision was a little spotty, but I didn't pass out, and I'm alive.

The nurse was an old man, intell. ;)

I think you're just experiencing anxiety when you go in. As a kid I hated needles and would feel extremely tense in the lab, but then as luck would have it I had to take meds that required about 9 blood tests in a 6 month period. That problem never came back after that.

Are you ok with things like regular shots? If not, try getting used to needles by getting a flu shot, TDAP booster, etc.

i passed out my first blood test but i don't know why. the second time the nurse laid me down on a bed and took blood while i squeezed a stress ball. i was fine. im fine with shots. i can take them all day because they go into your muscle but something about needles going into veins does not set well with me.

glad to hear you were fine but not about the nurse ;)

Yep, I just look away, mainly so I don't risk flinching, and then look back, to check for green blood in the vial. ;)

I've been poked in my left arm so much in the last 20 years, that my arm automatically goes limp.

I think 4 vials at one time is my current record.

Looking away is good advice. You're not fainting from blood loss - sitting for a while will help.

See, kids, this is what will happen to you if you live as long as the gentleman quoted above. (So few do):p;) Something to look forward to. :D

Good to know you're conscious.

I remember the first time I took blood. Seeing my blood fill up a tube freaks me out.

I always though that part was cool watching it shoot in there.
I just can not watch the needle go in. I am always looking up at the corner of the room while they are putting it in. Once it is in I like to watch the blood go into the tube then when it comes out I look back up at the corner of the room.

That would have to be one hellacious boner. :D:eek:

See post suggesting vasovagal syncope. And it could be argued that almost everything that goes on in your head has an effect on your body..

It probably is psychological, but that doesn't make it any less of a problem. Just warn the nurse that you passed out last time before she does anything and like someone else said, sit and relax for 10 minutes afterwards before leaving.

I think it happens to lots people, so you don't have anything to feel ashamed about.

Once this guy got injured and I was asked to give blood because I am a universal donor (it was on my dog tag). After it was over they gave me a beer and sent me on my way... oh to be 20 again.

I quite like that feeling. I've only ever had blood taken once, just two small vials. I don't mind needles either!

But once I left the room I was lost, had no idea which way to go! Only lasted around 30 seconds and there were no other side effects. It was fun.

I'm not good with having blood taken either. I had a job a few years ago at a hospital and I had to get screened for a whole bunch of things before they would take me on and was sent to the hospital phlebotomist. This person sat in a room all day and their entire job consisted of taking blood samples. My veins aren't that great, but the phlebotomist stuck the needle in about 1 mm and the stuff was flying out totally painlessly. This experience told me that my problem with blood samples has all been due to the skill of the person taking the sample. If your sample is being taken at a hospital, ask if they have a phlebotomist! Good luck.

Are you saying what I think you are saying? That's just wrong!

Cannot stop seeing the orange puppet with a boner! I need mscriv to fix me!

You aren't broken, just terribly, terribly bent. :p

Oppsie. Did I break your mind? Sorry, it'll fade after awhile. I recommend some videos from your "hidden" folder.

Some things can't be fixed. In Appleguy's case, he'll just have to do the best he can with what he's got. ;)

Last time I had blood drawn, the nurse told me to cough as hard and deep as I could when I felt I was going to faint. This absolutely worked in keeping me conscious.
[doublepost=1510681682][/doublepost]Yeah the same thing happened to me today and the coughing helped ... but to be 100 percent honest a lot of it is in your head . They took a lot of blood from me but I️ calmed myself down by just relaxing as much a I️ could and it worked . ... need to update my phone sorry for the boxes.

WOW look at all the old faces in this thread. It's like a way back machine.

Indeed.

Having blood tests done never bothered me, but I do recall - it took ages to find a suitable vein - the last time I had blood taken feeling a little weak;a glass of water and remaining seated for a further minute or two soon dealt with that. By the time I left the premises, I was fine.
