Why would it do that?

Boy, if someone had an answer it might annoy me less. But I've got nothing.

It's not all the time, but it probably happens once or twice a month. It's enough that I occasionally check the zoomed-out view of my route just make sure they haven't changed themselves recently.

Perhaps of some incidents or traffic that need re-routing? Although I would expect it to still say something and offer an option rather than doing something on its own silently basically.

It happens to me too but I usually notice that it's because of the new construction that was done to change or expand the highways or roads. Apple Maps hasn't updated their map data because it was relatively new changes so it would rerouted itself when I go "off track".

C DM is correct, map apps don't reroute themselves on their own unless you've strayed away from the route or there was a reported incident that prevents the route to be taken. I've noticed when using Apple Maps that it will announce that it's being rerouted and also announce when there is a faster route.

You can't. It baffles me that apple fails to understand the logic that not everyone wants to go on a toll road - even if it's just for 1 minute. I swear if there's a toll road nearby, it will always default to it with no other options.

But fear not, more social media integrations coming soon!

no surprise that they don't. apple has never been a good service company - see any of their services - mobileme, icloud, itunes radio .. they're all horrible and extremely restricted.

What about iTunes as a content platform for people to rent/purchase music, movies, etc.? Seems like that has been working it quite well.

I'd say it's OK. I and many others I know, simply don't bother to buy or rent any content from apple - youtube, vudu or amazon are much better choices for me, given that I don't have to rely on the itunes and apple ecosystem. Since I also regularly use my windows PC, plus chromecast, itunes is not a must-have. Of course, there are people who'll swear by it, which is fine.

Look at apple maps which are still so so terrible, esp. for the REST of the WORLD :) icloud drive - the less said the better. icloud email - who the heck uses that?

now compare this will google's suite of services, dropbox, etc.

The problem with apple is that their whole thinking is the priviledged, rich class in the US, having the best wireless and unlimited wifi everywhere..... most of the people in the rest of the world don't fall into that category, which is why there's a big disconnect. This is the area where google and microsoft are great. Microsoft have their problems, but even today, 95% of the world's desktops are windows based.

Here's how to use Apple Maps properly:

Don't use Apple Maps and download Google Maps. Problem solved.
