This looks pretty frustrating, I don't plan to edit, just watch my files back. Should I just use Bootcamp and XP/Vista? Will it play smoothly, what programmes would you reccomend.

Thanks

Toast backup HD

I had the same problem. Roxio Toast 9 Titanium will play those files back without having to wait for transcoding, plus do a lot more. It's $79/$99 though.

Hi I have a Sony HDR SR12 and have no problem getting the footage into Final cut Express. Where my problem is I want to backup the footage on DVD DL's as well as an external hard drive. You mentioned Toast directly taking the footage and transcoding. I don't understand the transcoding but can you guide me on using toast to copy the files onto DVd so I can log and transfer from the DVD DL as the source?

Really appreciate any help on this

I've been having the same problem with my MacBook Pro and mts files I have a Sony HDR-SR10. iMovie or FCP will not recognize my camera and VLC only plays the clips for a couple of seconds then the video freezes. I also did not want to have to transcode the video or create a toast image or dmg image to read the files.

After weeks of looking I've finally found an application to edit and play mts files on my Mac, Adobe Premier Pro CS4 works great!

works on an intel Macbook Pro, 2gigs of RAM

Roxio's Toast 9 (as someone mentioned earlier) is the only app I know of. Although I just dump it directly into FCP using Log & Transfer, not Log & Capture, and edit it from there. No problems doing it that way.

Hey man I registered just to say thanks so much for the advice.

I was having problems getting FCP to read or use the footage but your post solved my problem.

Thanks so much!

Try Installing

See my "AVCHD fixer is here!" thread. I have an installer that mightwork.

AVCHD Converter

You can convert the mts files.
I'm now using the AVCHD Converter.. I think it is useful and easy to operate.
I free download it on AVCHD Converter .
You can try to use it and your problem may be solved:)

question for EVERYONE who's posted on this thread

Hey everyone,

So I'm a newcomer to video blogging. I'm trying to decide between the Panasonic Tz7 and the Canon sd780. The former has superior optical and video capabilities with the AVCHD lite format. The latter is not as good, but it works more seamlessly with the mac. Is it worth the difference to go though all these hoops to work with the panasonic?

Really?? Are you sure??? I cant believe this.
Are you running this through windows, or are you able to use OS X?
If this is true then it has solved the BIGGEST problem with macs... AVCHD incompatibility

Just one last question,,, the Adobe Premier Pro CS4 software is not converting the AVCHD into another format, right?

How much memory does 25mins 1080i take on your mac? (if its AVCHD it should be 4GB)

Does anyone else have experience of using Adobe Premier Pro CS4?

Do you have to run it thru windows or can it work on Mac OSX?

iVerio and AVHCHD

Hi,

I'd like to buy and HD camcorder like the Panasonic HDC HS 300.

I could see the problems for using an AVCHD cam with the mac.

They are some soft really nice like iVerio but I can figure out if there are some camcorders that do not need video conversion to use them with Final Cut or iMovie.

Thanks for your answers

Alain

.mts files now won't play well

I was able to play .mts files in Toast Video Player 9. I upgraded to Toast 10 pro. Now, Toast Video Player 9, and 10, and also VLC 9.4 are choking on .mts files- they stop after a few seconds and won't play. Anybody know how to fix this?

I would like to bump this again. I still haven't been able to play avchd files, using VLC which should work, I get about 1 sec of fluid playback and then a lot of stuttering. Any advice for checking out avchd without transcoding first? I tried surfing the net for a solution but the only thing I come up with is people suggesting either VLC or Toast Player (which I both have) to play the files, but neither work (this is on a uMBP late 2008, 2gb ram, 2.4ghz core2duo etc)

One more thing, log says: main warning: late picture skipped (53868 > -2745). I have a FEELING (not sure though, since disk checks says all is ok) that my hdd is performing badly after I dropped my MBP. Could this be the case? Or could any other software slow it down? I might do a clean install of OsX just to check but I would like to know if that could be the reason.

Hey guys, if you have iMovie 8 or 9, instead of buying another program, Import into iMovie, then export out to h.264 (aka HD). The files are larger but comes out beautiful. It uses the .mov format. Then when it comes time to edit, iMovie, FCE/FCP will recognize it. I shoot with a SR11 and a panasonic HMC150 and I do this so I can edit in iMovie 6HD. But I do a 2 pass encode to keep the quality. Works awesome. A little time consuming but my DVD's look just like watching my AVCHD clips from the camera.

I have exactly the same question and problem. I have an even more powerful system, iMac 2.8GHz with 3GB RAM, and it doesn't work in either VLC or Toast 10. Of course I could import into iMovie or FCE, but I just want to quickly check some .mts files from my Canon HD100 cam. Anybody knows a program that will do this trick?

The PlayStation3 can play raw AVCHD files and they look the same as playing them back via the HDMI Cable direct from the Camcorder. So if you happen to have a PS3, this is going to give your the best quality without a hassle.

Windows 7

I believe the orginal post wanted to know how to play AVCHD (.mts or .m2ts) in it's raw format, without transcoding or importing into another format first.

Well with Windows 7 and the new Media Player that comes with it can play these and many other formats natively, without additional codecs or 3rd party tools.
