Enslave all the children in the neighbourhood and force them to sell lemonade for you... oh wait, I think slavey has been abolished. Then you could go for a better paid job, try to raise money from different kinds of sources, or go for a refurb as suggested above. Use your imagination!! (well, not too much though, you might end up in jail)

just be careful... it sounds like your "wants > budget"

it IS just a laptop.

i would say work more. Then if you can put more money away, your set. Currently it sounds like it is out of your range, something you may just have to accept

?

Very true, getting into debt when you don't have to get into debt is not a smart move when you're starting college. You're going to have enough debt from school without the much less friendly CC debt or loan. Not to mention that it's pretty tough to get a loan now unless you have solid credit.

There are rumors that the new macbook will have an integrated graphics card from nvidia that will be on par with an 8300m or an 8400m. IF this comes to be true then you should go for a macbook because an 8300m/8400m will be enough to run the software you need. Pray for an nvidia chipset in the next macbook and it should save you quite a bit of money.

Hee Hee...

It may not sound all that great, but if you want $4K in a month without currently having a degree, then you can't get it legitimately. So get illegitimate!

Yup.. The TRUTH Hurts... and so do some of the things that will get you that kind of Money that Quickly  I believe PLANNING AHEAD "was" in Order.. Sorry..

A few years ago they were recruiting Apple ambassdors on my campus in the US. They had two openings, it required about 10 hours per week of talking to people and answering questions, but apple provided them with a laptop. It had been an iBook, but that year they were given 15" Powerbooks (this was just before the MacBooks were introduced). It might be worth checking out, but it was their only form of payment.

Don't buy maxed out. For one, Apple's markup on RAM prices is about 200% more than any other store. If you can change a light bulb, you can upgrade the memory in a MacBook Pro. Also, consider buying a refurb at a 15% to 20% discount. In six months, you wouldn't have a top-of-the-line maxed out machine anyway.

Sell what you can, work some more hours, get a second job... and then when the time comes, see what you can AFFORD, and get the most you can for your money. If you plan on keeping a job while you're at Uni, you can always plan to do the upgrades as you go (ie, if you can only afford a base spec macbook now, upgrade the ram in a few months and the HD a few months after that).

Life lesson: live within (and ideally below) your means.

PS: you will not fail out of Uni if you have a MB instead of a MBP, etc.

Good luck!

Why do you need a max spec mbp? Just get the base model and upgrade the hard drive and ram urself. you wont noticed the difference in computing power from the slight processor speed upgrades.
