How to Reduce Google Chrome's Memory and CPU Usage

I don’t really understand the logic behind having 10 (or 100) browser tabs active in the background. Seems unnecessary and sloppy to me.

I learned yesterday that apparently 500 is the limit on open tabs in Safari on an iPhone. No joke.

Edge is a hidden gem in Microsoft's software stack. It's as if all the best developers work in this project, and the result is probably the best Chromium build I've used.

Edge has had energy management for months now and it works brilliantly. It doesn't get anywhere near as bloated as Chrome, and updates are frequent and bring many cool features. (They were also one of the first browsers to offer native Apple Silicon build. Months and months before Google managed to roll a version for Chrome).

I've been using it for just over 2 years now, and I haven't looked back. I recommend it to everyone.

I have a little secret for you - Microsoft has actually had the best developers for several years now. IDK whether it was by acquiring LinkedIn or GitHub. Maybe it was Windows Subsystem for Linux. Maybe it was replacing Steve Balmer. Maybe it was when Steve Jobs died or when Ives left.

But somehow, Microsoft has ended up building some great teams and they’re building some stuff that is pretty great. Better in terms of software quality than Apple has been doing for a long time.

Using it for years. It's fantastic. Just install uBO, ClearURLs, and CookieAutoDelete and you're set. Also turn off telemetry in the settings.

I use brave when I need a Chromium based browser for a few web-apps. I've found you don't really need uBO with Brave as they pretty much implement all of uBO's lists by default. Any benefit you've found in adding it?

Solution = MS Edge. It’s my main browser now, been using it for a year and a bit, very impressed.

It’s much better on the Mac than Windows. There was a brief shining moment when it was the best browser on either, full stop. But now Microsoft just uses it as a fullscreen takeover deception to try to force users to sign into a Microsoft account, install OneDrive, change their default browser back to Edge, etc.

They don’t pull most of that crap on the Mac.

As much of a pig as Chrome is it really shouldn’t do that if you really have no tabs open and just the browser itself. If that’s the case then I’m curious how that could be as well. That sounds like a memory leak. Maybe a buggy extension.

Check Chrome’s process manager and see if there’s a specific tab doing that. If you leave Gmail open for example I can see how memory usage could steadily increase but still should not be anywhere near 10G.

Another tip: You don't need to use Chrome. If you really need to use a Chromium browser for whatever reason then at least use Edge. If you care about the future of the internet and your privacy then you should not be using Chromium at all and that means using Safari (if you don't care about Privacy) or Firefox (If you do care about Privacy) . If anything happens to Firefox or Safari then Google will basically own the internet.

Safari is not privacy preserving? Apple is not making an iota of money from Safari. So where is Apple tracking?

Only installed for Occasional Google Support requests (when their other services don't work properly either!)

I switched to Firefox a couple months back over Chrome for work purposes on my M1P MBP. Outside a few odd quirks, it works just fine for my needs.

But on my home machine, I stick to Safari.

Google could probably put Mozilla/Firefox out of business if they wanted to as most of the money Mozilla makes comes from Google paying them (although not nearly as much as they pay Apple) to set Google search as the default.

Apple is actually making a lot of money from Safari thanks largely to the around $15 billion payment from Google to set Google search as the default. Apple definitely benefits financially from Google's search/ad business. This may change depending on how the DOJ case against Google goes.

You can't make a claim without evidence! It just makes your entire argument total garbage from the start. You might as well claim Tim Cook is a reptile with links to the British Royal family. That's how absurd arguments like this sound.

I'm all ears to hear of this allegation, and am very open to reading about it and learning more, but if you can't provide evidence or proof, I'm calling you out on it.

As an Edge user for 2 years, and somebody who understands and even monitors their web traffic closely (I run a UDM Pro, with PiHole as my DNS), I can tell you now, there is no evidence to support your claims and what you are saying is simply not true.
