How does one reset an Apple Thunderbold Display?

It's good news for me. I enjoyed this article. I own a Thunderbolt display, and will be picking up a second one in a few weeks.

I too enjoy my thunderbolt monitor.

Is is technically worth $1,000 by 2016 tech specs? Is it worth the money compared with third party options....no...BUT....the monitor has been a dream for me and works great for what I need it to do. Plus, it is beautiful to look at for hours each day and does not look cheap or plastic-y like other monitors that have higher specs and cheaper in price. The design is pleasant and I do not get tired of looking at it while working my long hours each day. It adjusts automatically depending on the lighting which is also nice. I don't mind the glossy look either.

I use every part of the monitor with the 3x old 2.0 USB ports, FireWire port, Ethernet port, and the 1.0 thunderbolt port driving two thunderbolt drives and occasionally another monitor, a Dell (if needed) plugged into the end of the thunderbolt chain and still works like a dream. No problems, no issues. Screen looks great, i do semi-pro video that doesn't require 4K. Built in Speakers sounds great. No complaints.

I loved my 27in Apple Cinema Display and would still be using it had I not had the change to sell it to a graphic artist friend who had an old 2008 MacBook and needed a monitor. Sold it last year to her for $500. Perfect condition and she was happy. I therefore spent $500 and added her $500 I got from the sale to buy a new thunderbolt monitor because I needed thunderbolt and FireWire ports. So...I really spent $500 for it. 5 years with the Cinema Display, sold it for $500, bought a new Thunderbolt Display my out-of-pocket $500 to upgrade my setup. She is happy with her Cinema Display that works with her 2008 MacBook, I am happy with my new thunderbolt monitor. A win win for all.

So, yes some do love the old expensive monitor. If I could afford to buy another, I would. Is it technically worth $1,000, of course not. It is still a nice monitor. Does it need a refresh? Yes...but Not worth it for Apple right now to Do so. Business wise it is not worth it for them to do. For us who use, yes, but Apple is not in the charity business and economically there is not a high demand for it verses the costs to produce verses what they would have to charge for a higher spec monitor, especially a thinner one etc. Too costly currently and they would not make their profit margin or numbers. A no brained why Apple has not put it out since 2011 unfortunately.

It has nothing to do with hate, it has to do with creating accountability for MacRumors. The article is poor because it doesn't provide the information that headline purports will be provided. Specifically, it provides ver generic troubleshooting steps (update the computer's OS, reset the computer's firmware, try a new cable, etc.) - none of which are in any way specific to the Thunderbolt Display.
Who cares if it's specific to the display? If the average user has a monitor that seems to no longer function, they may not (heck, LIKELY WON'T) try all the necessary steps because "it's just the screen." Most folks wouldn't try updating their Xbox firmware if their tv won't turn on, they'd just make sure the cables are plugged in.

How does one reset an Apple Thunderbold Display?

It seemed to me that this part is what resets the display itself.

Power Cycle for 30 Seconds

Shut down and disconnect both your Mac and Thunderbolt Display from AC power for at least 30 seconds.
  1. Disconnect the Thunderbolt Display's MagSafe cable from your Mac.
  2. Disconnect the Thunderbolt Display from AC power by unplugging the cord.
  3. Disconnect all USB peripherals and any cables plugged into the Thunderbolt Display.
  4. Wait at least 30 seconds before powering on your Mac and Thunderbolt Display.

Probably because people like me with brand spanking new 5k retina iMacs with 27" and fully spec'd out I7s, RAM and video cards having our computers crashing whenever the monitor sleeps or when the iMac sleeps ever since El Capitan was installed. This despite not having anything connected.

As an aside, have another same spec iMac that was not upgraded and works fine. Lol

Wish this article hit last week. Literally just took my 4 year old Thunderbolt Display down to Apple Service Provider for repair after not using it for a few months since it last stopped working.

I never power cycled it ( never thought it would be possible to fix it that way ) and they returned the display saying there are no issues with it. Quite happy but have already moved on to a 4K Dell.

I think you are missing my point, which is that the headline misrepresents the content of the article. If they wanted to give an incredibly basic and generic "tip" that amounts to the Dell support guy telling you to unplug your computer and then to plug it back in, well, then I guess could do that, but to present this as "a way to reset" a very specific make and model of display - well, that's crap.

The article explains exactly how to reset the display and I even quoted it to you in post #32 above. And that is exactly what the title says the article is about. I honestly don't see what your issue is here. If the article does not interest you, you could just skip it.

I have owned a TBD since March 2012 and did not know how to reset, so the article was of interest to me.

Seriously Apple, a $1,000 monitor simply shouldn't be having these issues. I have a fantastic 4K monitor that looks far better and has much better quality standards than an Apple thunderbolt display. It's ridiculous people even buy such garbage when there are so many better options out there for lower prices. I guess people really will pay anything for that shiny fruit logo.

Mine does. Everything except Firewire. Since I never used Firewire, I can honestly say 3440x1440 resolution, 2 thunderbolt ports, better screen, better speakers, more connectivity options, etc. are worth it. Of course, some would argue firewire 800 is more precious than those things mentioned here.

And btw, I had Apple Thunderbolt Display. After 2 years it died on me. Sometimes it would turn on, sometimes it wouldn't. Upgrading firmware, smc reset, 1000x more things and it finally died on me. You have a long thread about this issue on apple forums. Lots of people with exact same situation I was in.

Do you think Apple reacted to this? Of course not.

Will I ever buy Apple monitor again? Nope. I payed premium expecting a premium product and a premium support. Got neither. Glossy screen with large bezels that was pretty expensive couldn't last me 2 years. With so many great monitors out there that support thunderbolt 2, and so many coming out that will support thunderbolt 3, I really see no reason in waiting and finally purchasing a monitor from Apple.

Not with their past record. And besides, they aren't interested anymore in monitors or pro users. They have their iToys to play with now :)

Just curious, what monitor do you have? It sounds nice.

It seemed to me that this part is what resets the display itself.

4 1/2 year old, $1000 monitor needs an 18 step trouble shoot.
Unbelievably sad.

It's not so much a monitor as a co-computer, for better and for worse.

My first Thunderbolt Display was a disaster but the second one lasted for many years before needing a new power supply. Thankfully the replacement is redesigned.

Same procedure for the 27" (non thunderbolt) display? Mine looses usb keyboard connection after long sleeps...

LG 34UC87m-b. But be careful, since LG has lots of UC87 models, but just this one has thunderbolt built in. Amazing screen. Lots of working room on this screen :)

i am encountering slowness when I connect my Macbook pro to the TB display. Specially when I browse or run videos. Once i disconnect the display, my computer goes back to normal.
I followed a thread at apple support since 2012 but there is no answer!
