Cult of Mac walks us through the process of selling your iPhone in anticipation of the 3G iPhone launch next week.
It’s iPhone upgrade season. With the deluge of iPhone 3G rumors convincing just about everyone that now might be a good time to dump the old phone, in anticipation of getting one of the new models, here’s a tutorial to help you sell your iPhone safely, and get the best price.
The guide actually does touch on some good tips, including how to wipe data from your phone and also the fact that unlocking your phone can get you $100 more than a locked one.

The biggest question, of course, is when to time your sale to avoid the rush of other sellers.

Already sold mine for $600 on eBay! (TODAY!)

The demand for iPhones is extremely high because the Apple store doesn't have them, so sell yours ASAP.

Wipe data is a good idea if you have personal or financial data on your phone.

Unlocking is a VERY good idea to make some extra cash. (Takes less than 10 mins!)

If you are selling on eBay I would use a 5 day listing no later than today, a 3 day listing no later than Thursday and a 1 day no later than Saturday. Reason being is that you don't want your buyer to find out new iPhones came out before they have paid for your item.. aka, buyers remorse.

If it was me, I would do a 3 day listing today and unlock it! Good luck guys!

IMO it's a little late to be trying to sell your iPhone for much $$$. With an almost certain announcement of the new iPhone(s) in less then a week, unless you can find a really "untechy" person that has no idea about a new version coming out and wont try to get their money back as soon as it does. Two months ago would have been a great time to sell it. I mean look at the iPod, not that many people want to buy a 5th generation iPod right now. :D

I put my used 8gb on craigslist for $400 (what I paid brand new 6 months ago) and got like 20 offers in the first few minutes from real buyers with phone #s and everything wanting to come pick it up.

So no, its not too late.

You'd be surprised at the demand for these phones still, and how there are less tech savvy people in this world than you allude to.

I just sold mine used and relatively beat up, unlocked, for $300. Not bad at all, and I almost felt bad for the guy considering he had no idea why I was selling it. But I did

Ah wish I'd bought an iPhone when they were going for £169 ($300) on O2. Could have sold it for nearly double that in the last couple of weeks.

mine has about a day left on ebay, I didn't unlock it but based on past sales I saw think it will still get around 400 which I will be happy with. its at 250 right now so i hope those last minute buyers will come in and jack up the price. might put my wifes on a 3 day listing tomorrow :)
then i just hope the 3g comes out on monday I can't go too long without my iPhone

I'm buying up as many 1st generation iPhones as I can. Then, when Apple fails to announce anything new at WWDC, I'll sell them back to the same people at a profit. My method can't fail... unless of course the rumors are true. ;)

your kidding right the rumors are true and you just wasted a lot of money

Yes, I'm kidding, and I do believe the (main) rumors.

I do wonder how much the market for first generation iPhones will change from before the announcements to after the announcements.

The iPhone v2 will not be available the moment the Keynote ends. Secondly, we will know when its in AT&T stores at least 3 days prior to its release. Furthermore, the current generation; what a brilliant device!

lot of blogs

I am starting to see lots of blogs on how to sell your iphone so you can buy the new one coming out in few days....and boy these are crap!

Here is my version and more profitable with less risk.

Love to hear some feedback

I'd love to sell my iPhone, but I can't go long without a cell phone. What are people doing in the interim? Any suggestions for me?

Re activate your old piece of crap from ATT. Unless you just switched for the phone. Can probably just swap out the sim.

I also am wanting to sell my iPhone. However I have to cancel my contract with AT&T because i'm moving to Japan so does anyone know if you have to call AT&T to do anything with the SIM card first, or do you normally mail off the iPhone with its included SIM card? Relatedly, if I can find someone to take over the contract for me, does anyone know how that process works, or if it's even possible?

I have a jailbrokn 1.12 iphone should i upgrade to 1.14

I have a jailbroken 1.12, should i upgrade to 1.14 then reset and unlock it, is it easier to do in 1.12?, and should i leave the sim in and sell it,

Hmmm.. don't want to sell my, I want to see if I can give it to the wife & buy the new one!! :D

I just sold mine 16 Gb for $659 in Denmark, just a shame the new iPhone probably first will be available in late June, luckily I have an "old" Sony Ericsson walkman phone :p

I just put my cracked phone on ebay with a 24 hour listing. 12 hours to go and it's already hit $71 ... should go up another $100~$200 or so.

Not bad for a broken phone^^

I just put my sim in my old RAZR and man did the subway ride suck with no music this morning

My phone says "THis accessory is not made for the iphone" about 80 times per day, so I doubt I'll ever get much for mine. Also it's a 4GB which is only good for historical collectors now.

It'll probably end up in some foreign market as parts to fix broken, unlocked ones...
