What they could’ve done was added an option in settings to toggle between the two.
Or you could just drag to the left if you want to take bursts & to the right if you want to lock in video... & every phone works the same, and no matter whose iPhone you pick up to snap a picture, you know exactly how the controls will work.
An answer to things being slightly more complicated is never: “let’s make them even more complicated than that”.

Not sure how you mean. Say more.

For me, it’s not the same. I’ll catch the issue a week after it happens. On any given day there’ll be legit photos, business receipts, and 300 toddler selfies. I’ve got to hunt down photos and swipe to select rows and rows, then delete. A video is a single click.

I’m happy for anything that makes toddler photography trickier.
I misread that you were talking about a single burst of 300 photos which can all be deleted with one click. If it’s many photos instead of one video than I understand what you are saying.

True, this would’ve been a great solution.

For goodness sake, how is any normal user suppose to work that out? Most people will just think burst photos has gone. Along with deleting apps and updating apps.
It could also be said that many users didn’t even know about burst photos.

Shouldn’t this be iOS 13 instead of the 11? What hardware does the 11 have the XS doesn’t which allows it to do this?

Would have been awesome to have the option to select how the long press reacts. Record video, record burst, perhaps toggle Slow-mo in video mode. etc..

Even better, have the 3rd input method, 3D Touch, and map burst photos to that. I always wondered why we couldn't use 3D Touch on older phones more in the camera function.

But that is all gone now.

Apple has never had a good Burst mode strategy OR implementation.

Third-party (Burst Photography) apps are SIGNIFICANTLY ahead of Apple !

One persons feature is another’s turd pile. New burst gesture is horrible. They require delicate sliding and holding in a fixed position at a time when a user is about to photographic action. Delicate and gentle with action. Makes no sense from ergonomic. Slide to the side is terrible when used on a multi-purpose button. Press hard enough, but not too hard, now slide and hold. A perfect sequence of events to ensure you miss the action burst. This will be polarizing for sure.

And it’s not a feature. Both video and burst mode existed for many iterations of the OS. this is a change in how users initiate the action. Those who liked it as it was will almost undoubtedly dislike the change.

speaking of annoyances, the new keyboard requiring press on space bar to move cursor is also lame. Also, when did we lose the magnifying glass when pressing to select text?

“delicate sliding and holding” ???

Give us a break. You drag the button to the left until you’re done. If you can swipe open your phone you can do this.

Does anyone know whether the 16:9 photo option is only available to the iPhone 11 generation ? I can’t seem to find any option in my xs.

No... I’m pretty sure EVERYONE has experienced the incredible annoyance of accidentally ending up with a bunch of burst photos they didn’t want, from keeping their finger rested on the shutter for a brief moment.
Idk who all these people are, clamoring for burst... I’d bet the entire farm that 90%+ of all burst photos ever taken on an iPhone were accidental.

Count me in as someone annoyed by this change. I take bursts all the time because a burst is the best option when photographing animals, or in cases where it's hard to hold the phone still; usually one or two photos in the burst will have no movement. Meanwhile I take video a lot less often.

They should at least have a switch to restore the old behavior. I'm definitely filing feedback on this.

Wouldn't it be worse to accidentally take a short video than a burst, though? At least with a burst you have the photo you wanted, even if you have to delete the rest of it. With the short video, the best you can do is extract a frame, which will be lower resolution than a photo.

I agree. I sometimes accidentally take bursts with my DSLR when I keep pressed the shutter button. The result is 3 or 4 extra pics taken. If it had recorded a video instead I’d want to kill myself. In the case of a DSLR they would just add the option. (Meaningless “Pro” branding anyone?)

In any case, it is very easy to detect if a burst is likely accidental or not, and show the user some hint in the Camera Roll.
Now try to do the same with accidental videos.

I’m not sure if it’s just me, but last night at a concert, I was recording a video and tried to take a picture with the white shutter button. Nothing happened when it was pressed on the Pro.

While plenty might have, it certainly doesn’t mean that everyone by far has. And even out of those who have it also downs remain that many of them didn’t even realize or even really noticed what happened and still didn’t know about burst photos.

Remember when apple products didn’t need a manual. Imagine a user (especially an older user) coming to iPhone for the first time! The new cut copy paste / undo redo gestures alone are mind boggling. It’s getting crazy now.

Should have seen me trying to type numbers on an ipad! The whole drag down to get option characters sounds really clever, but turns out it isnt fast and is inconsistent.

But i was probably using it wrong! I mean, i tried to use it for my job.

Apple is introducing software features to make people think the hardware is progressing. Cell phone hardware has sort of reached a plateau where it is more than capable for us mere humans...so now the excitement is found in silly/ contrived things like "dark mode"...which could have been implemented on literally any cell phone ever made.

If you want "planned obsolescence", look no further! Planned obsolescence came from the auto industry, when each year they claimed great new features, when the new cars were essentially the same. It is tricking people to buy new when the new product is no different from the old one.

That doesn’t make the older product worse.

Absolutely true!

Sounds like you are catching on! Marketing creates the false impression that the new thing is better, when in fact it is essentially the same.

The term "planned obsolescence" is completely misunderstood...most people think it is about malicious engineers scheming how they can make their product fail the day after the warranty expires. The correct terminology for that is "value engineering"...making things as cheaply as possible, but it isn't malicious. It is simply manufacturers giving consumers what they want, which is cheap stuff!

Exactly. People want more features and yet complain at the same time. This mindset of not willing to learn new gestures/steps is odd, imo.

Uhh.... Apple slow-rolls implementation of obvious features, and over-hypes them as some amazing feature when they finally let customers have the feature. Apple deserves the criticism.

They pretend that software features are part of the hardware...and they use these "features" to sell new devices. It's dishonest!

I know their sales have been down, and I know that Apple is all about telling us what we need...but yeah nah.

So they made it so volume up and volume down both take video now. I’m really pissed I use burst shot often for action couldn’t they have left one volume button as burst?

Yes, they are making it bit more complex, either deliberately (once people get used to, would be harder to switch to another OS) or maybe they ran out of options. Earlier the UI would itself be a guide on what one should click/do next, now it is a bit confusing. Clip app is one example at least for me.
