Obviously a dumb question.

Bought an iPad 3 at best buy today, but the box just says iPad.

Any way to tell without opening it up if it's a iPad 2 or an iPad 3?

I have trust issues, especially with human intelligence. :(

Thanks in advance.

They all say just iPad on the side. On the back you should see a newer model number.

A new iPad with 32GB WiFi is model: MC706LL/A

time to overcome your trust issues ... if you bought an iPad 3 at BB ... that is what they sold you

I haven't opened it, so I can't answer one of the questions.

Part No. MD328LL/A

The clue is the price.

If it was the wrong Ipad they sold you take it back.

If you bought an Ipad 3 I imagine it is. Open the brown box as the white one is sealed anyway. The new wallpaper is on the picture of the new Ipad.

Well, the guy didn't seem to know a whole lot about technology. I just want to make sure he didn't sell me an iPad 2 on accident.

Glad you got the answer OP... but really, not the best look coming in and chastising BB employees for being incompetent, yet you yourself are unable to do a simple Google search to find the answer to your question.

Here is what the 3rd gen box looks like.

Settings -> General -> Diagnostics & Usage -> Diagnostic & Usage Data

Pick one of the .plist files

Look for the line 'Hardware Model: iPad3.3'

You can tell by the wallpaper depicted in the iPad. I know on the box it's at an extreme angle, but if it looks like this...

... then you're golden.

Also you should have an iCloud sticker on the box.

Yes this is the quickest to tell that you bought an iPad 3, as long as its not an open box item... if it's an open box item, I would check the model number on the back.

LMAO this gives a whole new meaning to "n00b" :p

Have you ever heared of google? couldn't you google the part number from the box?

Just leave it on for 10 minutes then feel the back. If its warm, you have an iPad 3. No joke.
