After opening it, I found that serial did not match the box. Someone had exchanged their iPad 2 in the iPad 3 box.

Just got back with a new iPad, all is well with this one. :apple:

So some jerk off swapped it for an iPad 2? I guess Best Buy didn't bother checking the return or some employee may have swapped it.

Wow are you serious??? Lmao... Just check the back it should say 2012!!!!!!!

- Wallpaper on the screen of the iPad (blue=iPad 3, white=iPad 2)
- iPad 2 wifi model says iPad 2 on the back (above serial)
- iPad 3 wifi model says iPad on the back (above serial)
- iPad 2 3G says 3G on the back
- iPad 3 4G says 4G on the back.

How hard can it be?

To the OP, A rare case of excuse me. Unfortunate not to have the product inside the box that you should have had. Enjoy the new iPad.

Answer to PRELAG

You have a totally valid question. I got an iPad model MD3238LL/A which is in fact a 3 generation iPad Wi-Fi 16GB White. The earlier comments referring to the the box having an iCloud sticker on the bottom of the box is true. In addition, it seems that the iPad 3 generation has Voice Dictation integrated into the On-Screen keyboard (little microphone on the left side of the space bar). The way I found out directly whether this was a 3rd generation iPad from Apple was when I tried to contact customer support. I didn't even have to chat with anyone since as soon as I entered the serial number for my iPad a message came on and confirmed a 3rd generation iPad. This is the link:

Hope this helps...

why did you reply to this thread? i mean, the OP had his question answered, multiple times....yet you felt the need to reply to a thread that has been answered since March. so very odd.

Gosh some of you are mean. She just asked a question, God forbids you ever have a 'stupid' question.

OP, enjoy it. Sorry about the meanies. There are nice people on here and feel free to ask questions or simply do a search up top. :D

Hey, just wanted to respond to the people bashing me.

I googled the Part # from the onset, and found it on Newegg as a 3rd gen iPad.

I just wanted to triple check, as the plastic looked like it had been re-wrapped.

After opening it, I found that serial did not match the box. Someone had exchanged their iPad 2 in the iPad 3 box.

Glad you got it straightened out, but really, that's what you could have/should have done in the first place. After all, the box very well could have been full of rocks. The only way to know what was actually in the box was to look in the box.

a prime example of why i love the down vote

all stores have to check the serial number of the actual product on a refund. if not i could buy an ipad 3 and return my ipad 2 in the box..

All stores should, or all stores are supposed to, but all stores don't. I would say more often than not, a place like best buy would not notice if you return an ipad 2 in a 3rd gen ipad box.

Apple screwed up on the naming. It really should have been named iPad 3. That way there would be no confusion. I don't know why they'd be reluctant to give it a version number. They don't have a problem giving the software a version number.

My iPad 2 came in a box that just said "iPad" so, it doesn't really matter what they called it, it would just say iPad on the box.

On the contrary, a place like Best Buy will check the serial number. It's a $500 product.

They would check everything.

Even though the OP isn't here anymore, I want to know why people do this to themselves, what's the point of being paranoid after you've bought it? Why don't you do some research before going to the store and then see if everything fits in place, if it does buy it. If not, tell them.

And since he did buy it already, why not open it? There's a billion things that are different between the two that he could have found out easily, if he did Google it.

And if it was an iPad 2 in an iPad 3 case, then it would've been even better cause he could've sued them.

Before buying a product, learn something about it..
It's people like these who at the end of the day come up and say, "This doesn't work! Fail product! Fail company!"

The newer iPad 2 boxes even before the 3rd gen came out did have an iCloud sticker on them.

I was gonna say I'm pretty sure my iPad 2 box had an iCloud logo on it. Bought it online Black Friday. I might be thinking of my 4S box though.

I used to work at Best Buy. I can tell you without doubt that serial numbers are supposed to be checked, but normally are not.
