Just leave it on for 10 minutes then feel the back. If its warm, you have an iPad 3. No joke.

LOL...in the same vein, just use your iPad for about an hour. If you feel the urge to complain about a yellow screen or the back being warm enough to burn your genitals, you have an iPad 3.

You know you have an iPad 3 when...

:D

LMAO this gives a whole new meaning to "n00b" :p

Have you ever heared of google? couldn't you google the part number from the box?

Why does the fact that someone comes here to ask a serious question, noob or not, make u "laugh ur A$$ off"? Because u knew the answer and he didn't? Does that make u better then he is? Not hardly! Im not a noob but I ask a lot of questions that might seem dumb or "noob-ish" to some people. But at least I get an answer to something I didn't know before I posted. Obviously the OP didn't know how to tell the difference between a 2 and a 3 with the box sealed. But now he does. So he learned something. Isn't that why these forums are here?

The only dumb question is the one that's not asked.

It's amusing because the OP could have easily found out the answer to his own question by simply thinking for a moment and doing a search on Google instead of being a mindless robot and wasting people's time by posting questions with obvious answers.

The only dumb question is the one that's not asked.
There are no dumb questions, just dumb people.

Hey, just wanted to respond to the people bashing me.

I googled the Part # from the onset, and found it on Newegg as a 3rd gen iPad.

I just wanted to triple check, as the plastic looked like it had been re-wrapped.

After opening it, I found that serial did not match the box. Someone had exchanged their iPad 2 in the iPad 3 box.

Just got back with a new iPad, all is well with this one. :apple:

A sure test

Turn up the brightness all the way and hold it in your bare hands. If after 10 minutes your still holding it you got ripped off. Sorry.

Well there was no way we were going to be able to show how to figure out if it was an iPad 2 in an iPad 3 box without opening it was there!?

SURE you did. That's why you said this in your original post, right?

Any way to tell without opening it up if it's a iPad 2 or an iPad 3?
If you already "googled the part # from the onset" then why ask this question in the first place?

I just assumed that there might be a significant difference in box art between the iPad 2 versus the iPad 3.

I am upgrading from the original iPad, so I have only seen the iPad 2 box in passing. I was also under the impression that Best Buy still had a restocking fee on Apple products, so I was hesitant to open it considering how it looked like it had been re-wrapped.

I wasn't expecting ESP or anything, I promise! Just a simple, "Hey, the box should have this on it."

Read my above post.

Apple screwed up on the naming. It really should have been named iPad 3. That way there would be no confusion. I don't know why they'd be reluctant to give it a version number. They don't have a problem giving the software a version number.

Why wasn't there any confusion with the iPod? Or the Macbook Pro?

I generally try to be helpful and not condescending on these forums, but I am inclined to side with IllIllIll and say there are no dumb questions just dumb people. How could you fork over upwards of 500+ dollars and not know what product you are getting especially because people have to have these brought to them from a locked storage area.

There is very little to distinguish between an iPad 2 box and a New iPad box. The wallpaper displayed is different on the iPad displayed on the box as shown in this thread. The new iPad box has an iCloud sticker on the bottom while the iPad 2 box has an Apple symbol on the top & bottom. And, it says 4g in the description on the back unless you got a WiFi only model.

Those never had numbers at any point. And actually there's plenty of ambiguity since you have no idea how old they are without checking the serial number or whatever on the back and googling it.
