I think the part you are missing is that to use Migration Assistant to import that data, you have to check the box to import that account, so the permissions associated with that account userID come in also, and that is what can cause problems.

Sure, if you just make a new account during the original setup then attach the backup drive and only drag in say your Photos library, you will not have these permissions issues.
Can I take out my SSD from my old Mac. Connect with this? To my new Mac book? To move it manually?

If this is the 2011 model you mentioned in another thread... then yes. It uses a SATA standard drive that will work with that adaptor.
It is 2011 but I had recently replaced the HDD with an SSD. So I would be doing this with the SSD that's in the MacBook now.

I'll just have to remove the SSD from the Mac correct?

Yes, that would work well.

A TIP that will make things MUCH easier when you connect the drive via USB:
1. Connect the drive and let its icon mount on the desktop.
2. DON'T "open" the icon yet.
3. Click ONE time on the icon to select it
4. Type "command-i" (eye) to bring up the get info window for the drive
5. Down at the bottom, click the lock and enter your password (the one you are using on the NEW Mac)
6. In "sharing and permissions", there should be a checkbox "ignore ownership on this volume".
7. Put a checkmark into that box, and close get info.

You can now access and "bring over" just about everything you need to on the drive, without permissions problems.
"Moved over" files will "come under the ownership" of your NEW account.

i bought the new 2018 MBP. i have used migration assistant twice and my data has not been transferred to new mac. Only the apps show up on the new mac. Other data doest show up. I am going to use Time Machine now. Hopefully this will solve the problem. I am running Mojave on both the machines. It may be Mojave that is causing the issue!
