Isn't that why Apple created Do Not Disturb?

You can have your mute off, but DND on and alarms will go off as scheduled. Exactly what your scenario demands. And if Apple can provide that with DND, then why not the opposite direction of letting the mute switch silence alarms.

You are right. However at the time DND wasn't available yet.

Did not know that until this thread. Does that include all alarms from the calendar, alarm clock, etc?
Don't think the calendar has alarms, just alerts/notifications, which are different than an actual alarm.

I actually prefer that the mute button does not silence alarms. I have daily alarm in the morning, and it has happened before that I activated the mute button and forgot to deactivate it. When I am at an event, my alarm never goes off because I never set an alarm for say 4:30 PM.

I know if the mute button silence everything, DND is an option. But often it's simpler to use the the physical mute button.

And if there is an alarm that is set to go off during the time you want the phone mute?

Then you have to open the clock app and shut it off. Then hope you remember to turn it back on for the next time you need it.

Your "not that high of a burden" two step process is one step more than the process of a real mute switch.

Sorry, but an alarm that can be turned off by a tiny physical switch like that is the worst idea I've ever heard. Why even offer an alarm function at that point? Might as well just kill the clock app. I'd have to go out and buy a real alarm clock since the iPhone would no longer be a dependable alarm.

If I'm in that situation, I'd probably turn off my phone out of respect.

You do realize what I wrote wasn't about using my phone at a funeral. It was just to get the point across how I could be 100% certain no noise could come from my phone. For example if I wrote "If im in Jurassic Park and there is a T-Rex staring at me, it would be nice to have 100% guarantee my phone is silent without turning it off or making some checklist of disabling sounds.

That doesn't mean I'm serious about the Jurassic Park scenario. Just like im not going to be sitting on my phone playing angry birds during a eulogy

Then we see things very differently.

I appreciate the ability to be able to turn off an alarm when I hit the mute switch. I can do this because of the tweaks I have via jailbreak. It kills the alarms I may have set for some specific purpose that are set to go off during watching a movie or an event or something like that without me having to turn them off and then back on.

Perhaps we could agree that Apple could provide a switch in the Settings app that would include alarms during mute or not based on if it was on or off. That seems to be Apple's usual M.O. when faced with two differing opinions.

opening an app or game in class always gives me a kick cuz i never know if the app will play sound or not. its really inconstistent on iOS
Well, you can quickly check and make sure before opening the app in situations when you know it can make a difference.

Nope. Sure, it saves 90% of the people a few seconds but 10% of the people totally screw something major up and miss jobs, school exams, etc.

A feature that weighs "mild convenience" with "total disaster" should always come down on the side of preventing disasters. (And offering it as a setting doesn't prevent it.) The alarm clock is far more important than any other app on the phone. You don't lose your job if Twitter doesn't notify you. An alarm clock IS that important.

Well, ok. Apple is in your camp and you have what you want.

I disagree but I also get what I want because I'm jailbroken.

We're both happy.

Yes, I totally agree.

How often does a typical person needs to mute alarms as well as other notifications? The reason one sets alarms is not to forget an important event. It doesn't work well if one one has to remember to turn the alarm back on. You would need an alarm for that.. OK, my head started spinning now.

too easy to forget you switched it to mute or it accidentally switched to mute coming out of your pocket. I think apple does the right thing. I want alarms to go off.

OP - If you want it silent slide notification centre up and turn the volume down. Then all those vids you mention popping up will be silent. Or just use the side volume buttons.

At a funeral or similar event I'd do what the other poster suggested, turn it off.

No worries. I'm jailbroken so I've fixed this Apple annoyance. You guys who still want alarms to go off when the mute switch is on get to keep that option. :D

Maybe I need to go to more events/meetings then – in order to get more experience in forgetting I turned the mute on.

I rarely have a need to turn it off so I remember to turn it back on.

There are two buttons at the left side of your iPhone. they go up and down. They are called volume controls. Good luck with the dinosaur. I didn't know they were still alive ;)

I didnt really mean you. I meant people who are not as on the ball, not as clued up. You know the type ;)

Sigh. Why should you have to check if you've enabled mute?
Even if I previously enabled silent mode and I'm somewhere where I know that the phone needs to be silent I will almost always double-check if it's set to that even recalling that I put it into that mode at some point earlier. Similarly if I'm going to launch some app in a place where it's quiet and I don't want to make noise I will check the system (vs ringer) volume to make sure.

None of that is arguing that it wouldn't be simpler to mute the system volume somehow perhaps, that's not really the part I was addressing. However I'm not certain I'd necessarily want the ringer mute to mute the system volume as well.

And there's certainly all of that too.

Today's iPhone 6 sound issue:

I get a voicemail on my phone. I go to play it but I don't realize that the speaker icon was flagged as on. So then blaring in my office is my voicemail at full volume which im fumbling around trying to mute.

It's amazing I can carry a laptop and not worry about these things but my iPhone is just full of sound booby traps.

Seems like the same kind of thing would apply to a laptop as well and has gotten many people similarly.

How so? I don't recall my MacBook Air ever making noise when it's on mute.

But how would you know you are on mute--you would see the speaker icon showing you are on mute. If you don't check the speaker icon you wouldn't know and could very well not be on mute. That's along the lines of what you described before where you didn't check/notice the speaker icon being enabled and thus sound coming out of it.
