I have tried thru AT&T like I did with my phone but they won't unlock my wife's. To tell you the truth I'm not sure why they unlocked mine but they did. Now they won't do the same for my wife's. I also was thinking about trying swift unlocks. We're they able to unlock anyone's phone when AT&T would not do it?
I just unlocked my 5 with swiftunlock. I'm using my new 5s and when I tired to unlock the 5 on AT&T's site, I got a message that they won't do it for 14 days after an upgrade to the 5s. I called in and was told that there is a 14 day return policy and they won't do it until that time is up. She said that in the past, people have bought a new phone, unlocked the old phone and then returned to new phone. Then they were off contract and had an unlocked phone.
This 5 is sold and I don't want to wait the 14 days, so I did swiftunlock. Got the unlock email in about 4 hours. When I used a imei checker on the web, it does say it's unlocked. The 5 is restoring now, so I'll know for sure in a few minutes.
Hopefully in a few hours I'll have cash in hand that covers the cost of the 5s (tax included) and AppleCare+ with some left over. Now if I can just get AT&T to waive my upgrade charge I can add $36 more to the profit.
BREAKING NEWS - the restore just finished and iTunes says - "Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked!"
Sweet!
