How do I upgrade my OSx to one that isn't the most current? Trying to go from Mavericks to Sierra but the only option in the app store is High Sierra.

Apple removes stuff from the store, so get it quick and save it for futher unless u already have the installer kept. like i always keep them (not just to re-install when i need, but for other stuff, all the way back to Yosemite.)

I want just to give you this information:

Migrated a friend´s MBP 2 days ago from elCap to Sierra.

started the download, then by chance found an already complete but not latest-Version Sierra Installation app (not yet installed, but already downloaded) sleeping since months in "Applications" ready for installation. That was astonishing, but comfortable... he told me that he is not aware at all having downloaded it.... ?!

So immediate installation was no problem: after restarting under Sierra, in the App-Store (upgrades) then appeared everything to upgrade on the latest Version 12.6 and downloading of all security-updates.
(DL of the latest Version needs some time, because it is the newest, complete 5 GB Sierra; but you don´t need to personalize again once you installed the premature version before).

Though I am already (very happily) User of Sierra since some months, I did today just for interest a search for "Sierra" - and found a complete older version of the Sierra-App in "downloads" with....

All that, albeit yesterday I cleaned up my SSD using Onyx for Sierra in "Automatic mode" (which cleans out also useless old data and so on)...

I really have no idea why this additional (completely ready for installation) Sierra-App still exists - I wonder if there are also others who will perhaps find this in "Applications" or "Downloads" with a research ?

As for DL of new OS:

I create always a completely bootable backup (Clone) of my old system on a second partition using CCC before upgrading and so I can always easily go back with just a click.

Then I can upgrade one of them without any risc.

Nevertheless - nothing but downloading a new OS-Version in the app-Store without installing it and leaving it untouched or (better) copying it on an external device should avoid problems in the future and doesn´t bother you at all.
But so you have always the possibility to upgrade even after it disappears in the app-store...

If apple doesn´t change their policy, at least you can always install a existing premature Version of a new OS and in a second step immediately after that upgrade to the latest version of it and get all the necessary security-updates as well.

BTW: Sierra works perfectly (rapid and smooth) on all 2011 and 2012 cMBP´s in our family.
From my standpoint I can nothing but recommend OSX 12.6

I bookmark the heck out of articles relevant to my needs, save them to Instapaper. Not a cheat, there's a few web portals that I follow that include the direct URL to the MAS updates. I used wccftech, verified with Little Snitch which reveals the package URL - sometimes I find it faster to get an update that way vs waiting for an MAS refresh[(...)]

I read this thread after I installed a new SSD in my MacBook Air 5,2. I tried several of the workarounds mentioned, but nothing seemed to work. I got an "Install Mac OS Sierra" (10.12.6) app, but it quit on me, saying "This requires OS 10.12". I finally sort of threw in the towel and clicked "install High Sierra".

Long story short, I wound up with a machine running Sierra. The "Install High Sierra" app is on my HD, but for some reason I didn't get fully updated to 10.13. I did quit the installer before it trashed the download; maybe that helped?

I'd contact Apple. Tell them what you want to do, and ask them to put it in your App Store. (Any version you obtained through the App Store should still be there. All my old ones are there. I looked through the purchases tab list, and I see... Mavericks, El Capitan, Yosemite... along with all the other accumulated crap over the years, and each has a "download" button beside it.) If this isn't in your purchases, I'd see if they can put it in there for you so you can get it. I'd contact Apple support and explain the situation. They should be reasonably helpful and sympathetic.

However, if the only reason you want Sierra and not High Sierra is because of this root-login issue, all you have to do is set a root password, and the problem is solved. Yes, it's a pathetic and stupid oversight that they didn't make sure root login was disabled before they shipped it, but... it's not a giant, gaping security hole or flaw... it's just an option they set wrong before release, I am convinced. UNIX and Linux systems have for a while now come with an option for security reasons of forbidding tty, or login, or init or whatever it's called on Apple computers, from letting anyone log-in directly as root, which is I think, a good idea. Leaving root with no log-in password WOULD be fine if they still had root-login disabled. That's the problem, I believe.
