When traveling i sometimes tether my Mac air to my phone to get work done. This should save a step in the process and that's nice. Not huge, but a nice little addition.

And yes it uses my cell carrier data. Since I am on a 10 gig plan, I am not using this to stream movies, but for work to do emails and stuff on the go, this works very well.

Syncing and Power issues

Anyone else have trouble syncing their devices? I haven't upgraded to Yosemite, frankly I'm scared to and don't see much reason to. But for some reason, half the time, the Lightening cables don't seem to want to work with the iPhone 6 - worked perfectly fine with my iPhone 5, but my 6 won't recognize them on a consistent basis and I can't really synch my phone or iPad. It just hangs. It's as if Apple is gimping and breaking stuff to force people to upgrade and I don't want to in the hope that it'll miraculously fix these issues when I know it probably won't.

I don´t understand why the carrier would charge extra for data used in safari on your mac vs. data used in safari on your phone.

It´s the same data.

Because they can. Fortunately I'm paying $33/month for 2.5GB including tethering here in the US.

am I right in assuming that this is not a feature that will work on my early 2011 MacBook Pro, much like continuity ? #

This feature worked great on my 2011 MacBook Air in Yosemite B1, and then they removed it. Annoying.

Seems ridiculous to have a guide for this, you're seriously just saying click the WiFi symbol and select your phone.

Yep, and from the betas this is one feature that we know worked, unfortunately they chose an all or nothing approach for the final release as other features required 802.11ac.

In the OS X section here a user has a guide to restoring this feature on mid2011 MBA, as well as handoff, with a few edits of some files. Takes about two minutes. Yes, Apple deliberately removed this feature after B1. We can only assume it is part of their planned obsolescence program.

I use WiFi hotspot with my T-Mobile $30/5GB prepaid plan.

I don't know whether it is allowed or not.

It's allowed, but sometimes they institute a 100MB cap and then want you to pay $15 extra for additional tethering, and then sometimes they randomly do away with the 100MB cap. It seems like they're experimenting.

Works GREAT!

It works as reliably as al the Handoff features, which is, not at all - probably 30% of the time.

I've seen it appear. It doesn't appear right now though.

I'll usually get Handoff working between iPhone and Macbook and not the other way around. Then i'll reboot the Macbook and it'll work from Macbook to iPhone and not the other round.

It's one of the buggiest features Apple has have made...a theme of the times lately unfortunately.

When's the Yosemite update coming?

how do you log out of iCloud?

Will iphone 4S work with hotspots?

When I go to log out of iCloud on system preferences, it says it will erase everything on iCloud drive.

That's on a mac.

And what about on a phone, how do you log out of iCloud?

Thanks!

iPhone 6 Plus on iOS 8.1
rMBP Late 2013 on OS X 10.10

Both handoff enabled, both logged into same iCloud account, both have bluetooth and wifi on.

Did all the resets I have found on this forum and on the internet, logged out and in into iCloud on both devices, turned off and on wifi etc, in all various sequences.

- SMS Relay is working (now)
- Calls from rMBP are working
- Continuity (picking up safari e.g. on the other device) is working

BUT, WHY ON EARTH CAN'T I GET Instant Hotspot working?

My rMBP sees my iPhone in the wifi network list but every single time I get the message:

" Failed to enable Personal Hotspot on "Michel's iPhone 6 Plus" Check to see if the tethering device is turned on and in range of your computer "

Could anyone be so kind to tell me what I am missing???

PS Tried from my iPad Air to my iPhone and it worked immediately. rMBP not though...

I had the same exact issue. Turns out resetting settings on your phone will fix it up.
Settings > General > Reset (at the very bottom) > Reset All Settings. I also did Reset Network Settings just for good measure.
A pain to set all your settings again but it got my issue sorted right away.

Lol I have had unlimited tethering for free since 2011 thanks to jailbreaking. Continuity is a cute feature but it is just upgradebateware since it doesn't work with my '09 pro. Oh yeah, and since Apple didn't write the code, it actually works.

It is throttled but not crippled. I can check my email and watch youtube but I don't download movies.

Atleast Apple is making it easier to make a hotspot. I just wish tethering was free.

Welcome to 'Merica, the land of liberals, infinite taxes, and idiocracy. If I have a 4GB data plan, then I should not have to pay extra to use it for a hotspot.
Did that make sense to you when you wrote it? If not, why'd you post it? If so, seek help/get your meds checked.

As for paying extra to use it for a hotspot. Avail yourself of the free market and choose another carrier.

What I've noticed is that my phone shows up in the Personal Hotspot section when I don't need it, but generally not when I do.

For example, right now, I'm sitting at home, with my 2012 rMBP connected to my home network via both GigE/Thunderbolt, and WiFi. My phone is sitting next to me, locked, with a WiFi connection to the same network. So, of course, it shows up in the personal hotspot section in the WiFi menu.

Last night though, I was at a meetup, and after using my phone to look something up, I decided it would be easier to pull out my laptop and tether it. I locked the phone, put it in my pocket and pulled out my laptop, opened it, and checked the WiFi menu. No personal hotspot. I waited and tried again. Nope, still not there. I pulled out my phone and unlocked it. Still nothing. I switched to the personal hotspot section in settings. I checked again. My phone showed up in the WiFi menu, in the same section as a bunch of other WiFi nets in the building, and yet, it knew it was an iPhone, because it had the linked chain icon.

That doesn't seem right, does it?
