Do people not know how to use a calculator? 10% tip = divide by 10. 20% tip = divide by 10 and double it. 5% tip = divide 10 and half it. 15% tip = Add the 10% + 5% tip. Bill for 4 people? Divide bill by 4. Bill for 23 people? Divide by 23.

any% tip = divide by 100 and multiply the tip amount. ie 17.3% tip = divide by 100 multiply by 17.3

Wow, just wow.

I'm ready to get yelled at.
Really, it starts by even needing a calculator for calculating/splitting a bill. OTOH, I don't complain about other accessibility features - I just don't use them.

Obviously everyone knows that splitting the bill is dividing the price per number of people, which is fine by using the divider function... But in terms of UX it's easier to have the UI display a more humanised approach calling it: "divide X bill by X number of people". Geez people, calm down... Anyway I understand that a feature called literally "Tip" shouldn't remove the tipping part by allowing the 0%...

I can’t believe people need a calculator because they can’t do what is *literally* elementary school level math in their head.

Wow, just wow.

I think this is about quickly adding the tip to the sum and divide it by the amount of people. Let's say you go out with friends and at the end of the night, you have to pay $259. Now you can quickly see the tip amount and – if you pay – what everyone of your friends has to give you. It's even handier when you're drunk 😜
Why do you assume I would want to go out with these friends? 😉
How it's presented: compensation in lieu of gratitude for good service.
I always thought of it as compensation along with gratitude for good service. Otherwise, fully agree with your statement.

Probably has nothing to do with the lack of funding for public schools here in the states. Otherwise, how’s the view from up on that horse?

No need to divide and multiply.
Enter amount
Click +
Enter tip amount
Click %
Click =

Need to split, divide by number of people.

I think only US needs “tip” button instead of “%” button.
True. And thanks.

The method I gave and should have been clearer, 10%, 15%, 20% etc can be done in your head. Dividing for a party of 4 also in your head. When I'm the USA, I general round up to the nearest 10 after the tipping amount and then divide by the size of the party. Much easier. No calculator or smart watch needed.

I don’t fault anyone for using a calculator. Being able to do the math in one’s own head is just not a priority for everyone, nor does it need to be. Different people = different things they prioritize and are “good at” (better than you at something else, I assure you).

What I am bothered by is that apparently many wouldn’t know how to go about solving something as basic as tipping without a “custom” function, even with a calculator.

Explains the vast number of tipping apps on the app store. It's basic maths. If you can't do that, then there's no hope.

Glad there is no required tipping in the UK. People are paid a proper wage. I do tip when the service has been great or above and beyond. IMO in USA people expect tips for just showing up which I think is wrong.

doesn't work with my method. I only tip 15% of the subtotal before tax (what idiot would tip 15% including the tax lmaooo) so I need to do more math.

so lets say we agree to tip 15% before tax, I need to add that tip amount to the amount including tax then divide by the number of pax

I really hope no one is dense enough to tip 15% of the bill AFTER tax instead of before

Thanks MR, never knew one could do that! Might be because I never used the calculator on my watch but still I appreciate the knowledge!

I was an average student who went to average public schools and got average sat scores. Never finished college. The view from my horse is average. Thanks for asking.

They don't know math. I have never needed to use a calculator for this. I am likely just #blessed, but turning the bill into round numbers and dividing in my head is easier then getting a calculator out and figuring out exact numbers. I'd also just personally prefer to give people in the service industry more than 20% for the people who think they know how to use a calculator and are actually tipping 5%

I made a shortcut in the shortcut app just for this. I input the bill, it calculates 20% of the bill and then rounds up to the nearest dollar.

So if the bill is say $29.47 it’s will tell me to tip $6 (rounded up from $5.894) and then provides the total amount due.

This article seems to be incorrect... You can't have the Tip at 0% as the minimum is 1% (which is a bummer)... At least on mine with the latest public release...
Surely that’s the “1% handling fee” for you doing all the hard work when you split the bill 😂

0% Tip? Don't press the tip button. 0% means no tip. I know the US education system is bad, but this? Unless you're being sarcastic, then this is funny.

I save a ton of time and money by just not tipping. It’s an outdated practice that needs to go away
