You know, for someone who has "absolutely zero interest" in this "creepy" "cheezy" gimmick" "repulsive" "toy" for the "simple-minded", "lonely" and "easily amused" that have "never owned, or riddden in luxury cars like a Mercedes", you sure spend a lot of time talking about it.

I wonder if your wife knows how simple-minded and repulsive you find her.

Any thread mentioning Siri you better believe vitzr will be trolling there. With as much hate he has for Siri I don't know why he waste so much time talking down on it. Obviously there are tons of people finding great use of Siri. Just because he doesn't like it he feels he should talk down on people that are loving Siri.

ITA. Actually, in the initial stages, most of those questions were also asked of what was new or glitchy. They've been around for years and years....even the first car phone wasnt for the 'average' person and was a high priced luxury. As siri develops, Im sure it'll only enhance texting...and typing in text will diminish like the manual typewriter. I remember when mosaic/netscape/internet was new in the 80s and dial up. It was interesting but not much the tool we use it for today and people thought it was only for techies or businesses. Before photos could be attached directly on the phone to email, facebook, MMS, etc, the camera on a phone seemed gimmicky. I still don't care a whole lot about the camera, but its convenient if you want to capture that special moment, and I use it more now since it doesn't require uploading to do anything with it.

I didn't purchase the 4 because Facetime was a novelty to me since I don't need to see the face of who I'm communicating but Siri is a different story for ME and has saved me time and inconvenience of pushing buttons on a tiny virtual keyboard with nails when time is of the essence. It could encourage people not to type text and drive (maybe it's illegal but it still is what it is), and that's huge in the safety department since I don't believe there is any other hands free texting that works well right now? Even if it hasn't caught on yet, I think it will only get better and move from simply 'voice recognition, " and even though it's been around it was very unreliable (my previous phones couldn't figure out the simple name I was telling it to dial). It's now getting some press and real examples on what it's potential is. It just took a while to wake it up. With popularity come enhancements.

The very fact that people ask this question is indicative. Have you seen people asking whether web browsing, gaming, messaging, banking, GPS, camera etc. were useful? Probably you have not. Siri usefulness comes way down the list of useful features - somewhere between FaceTime and a compass.
I think that's more to do with the fact that it's new. Web browsing is something that people have been doing for over a decade (some people much longer) so simply bringing it to a new class of device (a few years ago now, obviously) is hardly a fair comparison with Siri where offering highly integrated voice access to a fairly broad (at least in the USA) range of services is something new, or at least it is to me.

hahaha +1

maybe someone can test this or let me know if this works, does siri use punctuation when dictating? if you're say writing an email? or can you tell her to make a new paragrapgh?

Yes if you tell Siri too add punctuation Siri will

Super useful. Love it when I'm driving for responding to texts & posting on forums

I like it. Just this afternoon, as I was dozing off, I simply said "Wake me up in 20 minutes". And Siri set an alarm and did. :)

The best part is not having to memorize voice commands.

but do you have to say things like "I was at work today and a man approached "add comma" and then he asked me about the johnson file.... or do you just say that and say "comma"?

I am finding it has a lot of issues if there is any background noise, for example on a high street. It also seems to have a problem understanding me!

just say comma and continue dictating. Same with period, ellipse, question and exclamation mark.

I'm finding it to be extremely useful! Texting and emailing will never be the same...

(in a good way)

Yeah, that is a super cool feature!
At first all I did was play with it, trying to find things to ask just to see how Siri would respond. After the fun and games, I'm seeing how very useful Siri can be. :)

Wow.

Ouch can't believe that macrumors ban users from 2007.

I guess dedication doesn't matter after all.

Being here for a long time doesn't mean you have carte blanche to be obnoxious. *knows* :D Besides, you missed what the moderators cleaned up so don't get too presumptuous.

I'll admit, I wasn't really into the whole Siri thing, but I've found it especially useful for setting alarms and timers.

ok then now my question is how does siri know when you want the word period spelled or the punctuation put? or does it ask you?

I'll answer with another question. How often do you find yourself talking about commas, periods, and question marks? Maybe this is more of a problem for females. I can see the conversation being almost like the who's on first bit.

Girl 1: Are you feeling ok, you've been in the bathroom for awhile now.
Girl 2: Yeah, I just got my.
Girl 1: Got your what?
Girl 2: My.
Girl 1: Look, if you don't want to tell me just say so.
Girl 2: You know, my. On a keyboard it's on the key between the, and the?
Girl 1: What?

when i shove some cookies in the oven:

"remind me cookies in 10 minutes"

or sending a text when driving.

"send a text to my wife saying hey im a couple minutes late, go ahead and get naked"

very helpful stuff

haha this made me laugh duly noted, but I'd presume that the option to have the word spelled out instead is still there.

Everytime I look up a feature or new product on the web I find myself in a chat forum. Once there I find people bashing the hell out of what I'm researching. They have no apparent reasons other than belonging to an opposite camp like android or windows.
Just enjoy whatever free phone you got on your plan and shaaaaaaaadup! I appreciate a funny comment but some of these people must be at home cutting themselves.

Oh, Siri says to get stuffed!:D

I love the fact that I can hear my text while driving instead of trying to drive and read. I think Siri will get better and better. Now ,if they can sort out the battery issue I'll be really happy.

useful. I don't really have reminders and crap like that,i tested and set a reminder for when i got home. It reminded me when i was 10 miles OUT..

I use it to set alarms mostly, and some texting as well when I'm driving. I feel siri needs to pick the pace up. Takes a bit to long, sometimes, to do a task like play music. But its beta, and idk when apple plans on make it the full release because from the looks of it this beta is here to stay for a long time.

if i had to rate it out of 10

7/10 when working...6/10 when network congested...

what can it improve
-faster speeds,as in figuring out your task.
-be able to delete stuff and not just create
