How good was the glass on the iPhone X? I ask because traditionally, I've only ever put a case on my iPhone's. Somehow, I got a very deep scratch on my current iPhone 7, which has bugged the heck out of me for the past year. This experience has me considering a tempered glass protector for my newly ordered iPhone XS.

I'm really thinking or hoping my screen mishap on my 7 was an isolated occurrence, and that I will be good without a tempered glass protector.

All that said, can you current X owners give me any insight as to how the glass has held up over the last year without a protector?

I have one pretty decent hairline scratch on the top left of the front of my X. That's it. Not sure what caused it or when it occurred. You only notice it when the screen is off and you are looking at the phone from specific angles. I have never had glass protectors on my phones and this will not sway me towards them. I hate them. They make the phone not feel as good to the touch and decrease sensitivity (from my experience, Idk if they've changed for the better since then). They are the condom of the phone world.

I haven't used a screen protector on mine ever and I have had it since day 1 in an Apple Leather case - No scratches at all here.

I've had a leather case since I got the X on launch. I have a few hairline scratches but also have one tiny gouge that i can go over with my fingernail. not that noticeable but i know it's there. doesn't mess with performance and have zero clue how it happened. it's very tiny.

Ughhhh, I get so sick of them saying they have the best glass ever in an iPhone for every keynote, yet anecdotal evidence shows the contrary. Really don't want to put one of these one, but I will hate myself if I don't and get stuck with another one of those deep scratches.

If it gets a really bad scratch & you have apple care. It’s $29 to repair the screen.

I will get a screen protector for the first time ever. I have some subtle hairline scratches on my 7 Plus and it is driving me INSANE. Just knowing the scratch is there, even if I only see it when I focus on it

Will AppleCare cover display replacement for a scratch? Is it their call or the customer's? e.g. if I have a rather minuscule scratch, but it annoys me enough to the point of not wanting to see it, can I just have Apple replace the display and pay the $29?

I don’t think they will...

My scratch on my X is in the same spot! The top left corner. You can barely see it unless it's in direct light.

My X was the worst of any iPhone I have had to date. It for some reason has many deep scratches when none of my other iPhones(in 10 years) had this issue.

I share this experience as well.

Yes, it's up to you if you want to waste an accidental for that.

I have had my X without a case the pst year. The SG bezels are new with no scratches and had a few minor drops but nothing on concrete. The back was a few minor scratches in the glass you can only see with the right lighting. The front glass has no scratches at all. No screen protector either.

Comments seem to be a 60/40 split on having front glass scratching versus not. Anecdotal I know, but it makes me real nervous, but I just hate the thought of putting a glass screen protector on this thing.

This is very much a “your mileage may vary” however I will drop in my experience.

I have had every iPhone from the beginning, usually a case never a screen protector.

I have had two iPhone X’s both kept in an Apple leather case. The first one (5-6 months) was scratched in multiple places. The second one is completely wrecked. Nasty scratches that can be felt by fingernail and micro scratches everywhere.

Doubt it if you will but both phones were never dropped and always in an empty pocket. For me the X had the worst screen durability I have experienced yet.

good for scratches but don't drop the phone even once. not even from knee height. the glass sucks

The iPhone X glass is definitely more prone to scratching compared to iPhone 7 or 8. I have lots of hairline scratches on x with same wear and tear that I had for my iPhone 7 Plus where I had none.
Softer glass on x than previous iPhones? Yes.

I asked In Apple store as I’ve got a small chip on my screen. She said it has to be significant damage that affects the use of the screen. Ie crack. My chip was deemed just normal wear and tear and so is not covered.

Im glad to see I’m not the only one who’s had a bad experience overall with the iPhone X display glass. All my previous iPhones seem to have never scratched as easily. I’m not sure why mine has more scratches than those given this glass is supposed to be the best ever by Apple. I don’t feel like i have been any less careful with my iPhone X than I have with others.

Gorilla Glass is scratch resistant. It’s gotten better but for safety you need to put a screen protector on your iPhone
