Careful. You are going to be told by someone that this will destroy your battery and therefore you are stupid for wanting something like this.

As you're trying to bring the level of discussion down, this just needs to be quoted togheter..

Battery life. Wifi especially is essentially constantly searching for a signal if it's always on. To a power user, that extra few % of battery life could be crucial, especially if they know they will have no wifi around. Some people also don't like hardware buttons/toggles. I have also read many a post where it has failed/broken. I had one "on its way out" on my 3GS myself.

The point here is that options are NEVER a bad thing.

Errrr, what? "Trying to bring the level of discussion down". I am not even sure what that means...

Those two quotes go hand in hand. I wasn;t saying that he is stupid for wanting it. I was saying someone here, who doesn't see the point of widgets, is going to claim he is. That's the number one BS statement I see iOS users make about widgets on Android. "Widgets kill your battery". That's a fallacy. Widgets that are constantly pinging a server to update information kill your battery.

I think if IOS were to use widgets, they would revamp the entire widget system to make it look clean and part of the operating system. The way they look on android is definitely not apple's style. They will think of something eventually..... but I do agree it's long overdue

I'll buy your resource argument, but we don't really have any idea what it would take to implement it. And I think that we can both agree that apple has the resources to get the brainpower to fix any issue/problem set they choose to (just look at what they are doing with patents, spending billions to acquire them and then go after the competition).

Mrochester, I would submit that as an end user any choice they offer you does benefit you. You may not see why you would possibly want with a widget now, but once that developer door opens who knows how they would implement that feature.

Lastly, I would also submit that I often come across threads lamenting the GUI, this choice can give folks the choice they been looking for to somewhat spice up the ui.

Yep, Apple could definitely add widgets if they chose too. They just simply haven't, they've brought us other features instead.

If I wanted widgets I would have gone with Android.

But I do think Apple should do like notification widgets or something and dynamic icons and live wallpapers as options.

The calendar widget seems nice, but the native Calendar app on the iPhone still looks a lot easier to use and I can imagine the widgets interface being a PITA to navigate.

I'm not a fan of the theme at all, seems sort of cliche (for lack of a better word) to me. The whole blue on black thing reminds me of when I built PCs when I was 10 years old and would frankly just be an eye soar to me. But to each their own and that's just me.

I'm also not a fan of the redundant information given to you across the screen. Like the clock, why would you need two clocks on one screen? The SMS/Mail/Call notification shouldn't even be there unless you have an unread/missed one. The "3G" indicator should be paired up with the cell reception IMO (but that's probably just my OCD talking). And what's with the "Good" under the battery indicator. I'd take offense to that, as if the dev is calling me stupid and saying I couldn't make a fair judgement on my battery life by the percentage alone.

I'd still prefer to "double click" the home button to control my music (this does work with third party apps contrary to what many think).

I know it sounds like I'm dogging on your widget/home screen, but don't take offense to it. I'm glad you found something that works for you. I'm just trying to show why I and probably a lot of other iOS users prefer iOS and it's lack of widgets.

I agree. I like the idea of widgets in general, assuming the implementation is right.

I also think there's a lot of potential in sharing widgets between iOS and OSX.

I'd love to have widgets and THIS is how I realistically see Apple implementing them (IF they decide to)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B3uj-MAJx0

- It doesn't change the UI too much
- It looks very clean
- It ties in very nicely with OSX

This is how I thought of it. Or they can add widgets to the lock screen, swipe to the left and you're on the widgets screen. It would be a faster way than Android.

Really? They were optional? ...yeah, I know, I rooted it and deleted them all.

You didn't have to root them to remove them from the home screen. Just long press on the screen and drag a widget to the bottom and it's removed.

There is no such thing as a wrong opinion my friend. In my opinion it needs widgets. Not because of sales numbers, but because I won't buy an iPhone until it supports widgets.

Having to go into an app for even the most basic of features is counter-intuitive.

Sure there is... Yours is wrong. iOS does not NEED widgets. It does not make life easier. Millions of people bought the iPhone knowing they didn't have an option for widgets yet they still bought it. SO there is your proof that iOS doesn't need widgets.

I predict if Apple keeps the iOS the same, then it will lose sales and iOS won't be exciting anymore.

I know that, but they annoyed me! That which annoys me is eliminated from my life, I don't care what it is!

What a ridiculous statement. People didn't NEED Facetime. People didn't NEED Siri. There are loads of things on the iPhone people don't need, so by your logic Apple shouldn't have developed any of this stuff, after all they were selling like hot cakes. Its called enhancing the user experience, something Apple are supposedly good at.

The fact is although they don't need widgets, I'm sure Apple will introduce their own take on them as there is clearly a customer desire for some kind of widget/live info functionality. And as has been mentioned several times, choice is good. If you don't need/want to use them, then don't.
