By the time Apple has finished with 10.9, it will have ported all of its applications to Windows. Just like QuickTime, iTunes, Safari, and MobileMe, the other iLife apps, the Pro apps, and iWork will be made available "Mac + PC".

Then Apple will drop development of OS X, and make its money selling software, music, and iPod/iPhone devices.

Dumb cat names got old in 2003. Change the record.

I am hoping that Apple just makes it easy for them and ports Mac OS X to PCs.

There are zillions more cat names left. And I doubt Apple would care if two different cat names were synonyms for the same species. And even if Apple did run out of actual cat species names, there are plenty of non-joke cat names they could use, such as griffin.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feline

Wildcat
Ocelot
Lynx
Bobcat

And given that Apple did Leopard and then Snow Leopard it means that they can also do Bengal Tiger, White Tiger, Siberian Tiger, etc.

In other words, there's no shortage of big cat names left. And Apple is gonna do way more than another 3 versions of OS X anyway, I don't know where you got that number from. After OS 10.9 comes OS 10.10, the numbers don't stop at a single place.

Lynx. Apple has that trademarked.

Apple abandoned the "Lynx" trademark last December. AFAIK, "Cougar" is the only unused cat that remains trademarked by Apple.

Of course, that doesn't mean much, as they didn't file for "Snow Leopard" until June 9th, the day they announced it at WWDC.

No such animal as a Snow Lion
there is no real lion, but a snow lion does exist
The Snow Lion is a celestial animal of Tibet. It symbolizes fearlessness, unconditional cheerfulness, east and the earth element
here's a picture :p

all i have to say is that if they go with fish names next is that they should let windows have every whale name.

There's only three version left, because of the OS X name. X means 10, as a roman numeral (I, II, IV, etc).

Hahaha, and 10.4 will never go to .10!

At any rate, the next big version of OS X after Snow Leopard will be OS X 10.7 Ceiling Cat.

So far all have been named after BIG CATS and there are only two names left, Lion and Cougar.

"...Releases of Mac OS X are named after big cats..."

Also Apple is doing Snow Leopard because it will be more about adding to and building upon Leopard that adding new features. So Apple can't go back and reuse names again.

let's not forget (and I'd love to see the specs on THIS one!): saber-toothed tiger

Maybe we will see OS 11 now that Snow Leopard prepares for the next leap in Apple Operating Systems :)

There's only three version left, because of the OS X name. X means 10, as a roman numeral (I, II, IV, etc).

Take a look at your "About this Mac" info box:

Mac OS X

Version 10.something.something

The name is Mac OS X. Yes, the X is symbolic for 10, but it's just a name. The actual version is 10.x.x. There's nothing stopping them from having Mac OS X version 11.1.2 or Mac OS X version 3873.9378453.2398748237. Although the last one isn't coming out for a few thousand years or so. ;) As for what happened to Mac OS X versions 1-9, well, nobody said your released versions have to start at 1....

Anyway, there will almost certainly never be an "OS XI" or anything silly like that. Apple probably won't hang on to OS X forever, but if/when it's changed, it will be to something completely different than the Roman numeral "X" thing.

That was 10.0.

Cheetah, Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lynx, Lion, Snow Lion.

Then OS XI... with FISH.

And Cheetah was certainly NOT fast at all. It was more like a limping house cat with a skin infection.

God awful it was.
