Because the world is coming to an end, my friend. :D

As the Arctic ice caps melt and more and more cars emit more and more pollution, Snow Leopard will give way to Dirty Snow Leopard and then Melting Leopard, Rising Oceans. Finally, in 2014, Tsunami Leopard, Crashing Wave will descend on the coastal seaboards, wiping out most of the world's major port cities and killing billions of people, plunging humanity into a long and dark age of peril.

And then we wake up to find out that every (mini) ice age ends sometime, and that it's not the car doing some hellish "earth central heating", and finally blast all hybrids to the sun. ;)
And by that time we finally have found out how to use the hydrogen-cell safely and cheaply, and smash oil out of politics.

I think the time of the cats has passed!Let's move to dogs!!

What about Bulldog?Or Canis?

I'm sure that the big cats will continue through OS X. My money would be on birds of pray for OS XI.

The actual version is 10.x.x. There's nothing stopping them from having Mac OS X version 11.1.2 or Mac OS X version 3873.9378453.2398748237.

As for what happened to Mac OS X versions 1-9, well, nobody said your released versions have to start at 1....

First, no. The 10 at the beginning is the same as the roman numeral X in the shorthand name. Mac OS X 11.x.x makes no sense.

Second, That was the classic OS. You know... System 7? OS 8? OS 9? And all the predecessors.

Birds of pray? As in 11.0 - Franciscan Falcon, 11.1 - Holy Hawk, 11.2 - Evangelical Eagle? ;)
(You meant 'birds of prey', of course!)

11.3 - Cardinal

Didn't need to have cool alliteration, even.

I have it on good authority that with a triumph in co-branding synergy, the final version of OS X is going to be called OS X Hello Kitty.

The will then be followed up by OS XI Snow Kitty...

There's only three version left, because of the OS X name. X means 10, as a roman numeral (I, II, IV, etc). I believe Apple is not dumb enough to continue with the cat names. They'll probably switch to OS 11.x after snowleopard or the the one after it. One or the other. I'm guessing a 2011 release for OS 11, matching numbers.

I second that. I believe that 10.6 is the last 10.x an in 2011 XI ala Mac OS XI 11.0 will be released and that 10.6 serves as the strong foundation.

Here's how I think it will go:

Cat Stevens

Cat in The Hat

And to make the transition from Cats to Dogs, of course:

There are no words... I can use... to describe... how awesome that would be... And now I can't stand... to have anything but that... how could... you? :p

*electric piano interlude*

Dreams I'll have next night... Make me want that OS, right? And I'm over to that Apple Store for... oh, ho, over to that Apple Store forooor... for the launch!

Who cares what they name it, all of you will be standing in line at the Apple store to get it no matter what the name is. (me too but thats besides the point)

OS XI will be a large architectural shift, to be worth of a new major version number. Apple wouldn't let a versioning number decide that - they'll do it when it's necessary.

Thundercat is a realistic name. They have a few left:

- Ocelot
- Thundercat
- Lion (10.10 IMO)
- Lynx
- Cougar

After that, I think they'll give up the cat naming scheme. Maybe use place names, maybe planets other than Earth, horse names, computer science names, physical phenomena, famous people... lots of things.

- OSX Mercury, OSX Jupiter
- OSX Colt
- OSX Loop
- OSX Plasma, OSX Supernova, OSX Nebula, OSX White Dwarf
- OSX Heisenburg, OSX Einstein, OSX Bohr, OSX Hubble

Mac OS 10.6 Shutthehellupwithtryingtoworkoutouroperatingsystemsnextnamebycomingupwithabunchofincoherentstupidrubbishorwewilltearyouanewass

Quite catching :D

In all seriousness my moneys on Ocelot or Cougar.

I can see space-themed names for OS XI. Especially since that's where they're going right now.

OS XI.0 Sol
OS XI.1 Terra
OS XI.2 Luna
OS XI.3 Ganymede
OS XI.4 Centauri
OS XI.5 Orion
OS XI.6 Andromeda
OS XI.7 The Great Wall
OS XI.8 Universe
OS XI.9 Multiverse

I also see OS XI being wholly multitouch with the keyboard and mouse being killed off, but that's for another thread.

Well, THAT didn't format right...

Baptist Buzzard? Methodist Mudhen? Pentacostal Peacock? Catholic Canary? ... this could go on and on! :D

Well if 10.6 Snow Leopard comes out next year, and obviously the last one will be Lion, and there aren't anymore big cats left, and Steve Jobs said when OS X started it was a ten year progression, well, obviously we are heading towards OS 11.

You figure each version last about a year and a half, so Snow Leopard will be eol'ed in mid 2010, possibly sooner, as Lion will ultimately be the fantastic swan song of OS X, as it would close out the ten years, actually probably lasting more like eleven-twelve.

I could only speculate but I would guess that Apple putting cameras on all their computers means they want to do some 3D interfaces Minority Report style at some point, so that could be the main focus of their next full leap into a new OS.

Mac OS X Stimpy

I'm starting to think 10.5 should have been called Stimpy.... and 10.6 can be called Ren & Stimpy.

Just that this release has been so silly and goofy for so many.
