I loved using FaceID all weekend during everyday use. Then I got to work today and it wont read my face when laying on my desk which means I need to wait each time for the passcode option to display to unlock. This is really annoying.

Touch ID allows you to register 5 fingerprints. Ive always had 2 fingers on each hand registered.

Easy fix for that. When you setup Face ID, do it from below you and not looking straight on at the phone. Picks up more of your face and you can look down at your desk and it will unlock. Works for me.

Every person who bought the X said that but I don't get it. Touch ID always worked perfectly for me since 6S.
FaceID isnt an "upgrade". Its simply a different way to authenticate login and for many its considered a downgrade. It works great for me (when I'm in range) but it also introduces new problems that were previously solved with TouchID.

My personal ratings would be:
TouchID = Great
FaceID = Good Enough

(Its a shame we didn't get both because it really would have been the perfect combo.)

Right, but even there it says to set it up holding it at waist or stomach level. I dont sit that high above my desk, not really sure who does lol. The angle required when its on the desk isnt very convenient.

I would prefer if there was a "use passcode" button on the lock screen rather then having to wait for it to ask for FaceID and then the passcode option appearing.

I don't either, but I set it up that way and now when I look down at my desk, and look at the phone it unlocks every time. And works the same holding it, think it just gets a but more of the face, but improves it for me.

Face ID knows you are using your phone. Touch ID doesn’t. Face ID is proactive. Touch ID is reactive.

Im going to buy a stand that will keep the phone at a slight angle above the desk. That should solve the issue. Other then that, I love it

I've had every iPhone since the 3GS so I had Touch ID on the 5s when it first came out and I experienced the second generation of Touch ID when it came out on the 6s. I never had any problems with it. It always worked flawlessly.

I've had the iPhone X since 11/3 and Face ID is great. It hasn't made any mistakes so far and I've been using my phone a lot since I'm still in the honeymoon period. It's not as fast as Touch ID on a foundational level, but for actual use, it's awesome. To be able to pick up your phone and have it show you your notifications is really awesome. Before you had to rest your finger on the home button and wait for the previews to come up, but now they're ready for you by the time your phone reaches your line of sight. For actual use, I honestly do think Face ID is quicker. It's a really good replacement for Touch ID and I'm sure Apple will make it even better with future generations of the TrueDepth camera system.

Face ID works I’m going to say 9 times out of 10 for me.

There’s a few times where it just wouldn’t work, and I was forced to use the pass code.

I remember when Touch ID first came out and it would for the most part work and every once in a while not work. Same here! Once it’s perfected it will be spot on every time.

My only issue is some banking apps that I would use my print for aren’t updated yet for Face ID.

I agree with many that it’s not as fast and accurate as Touch ID but it will get better just like the second gen of Touch ID where it’s faster and let’s you be a little further away and at more angles. Then it will truly be better then touchId.

Face ID is better because when you go into a secure app, it will just unlock instantly after it scans you. It's awesome, love it. I thought I would miss Touch ID but do not at all. No home button is even better too, really surprised how much faster swiping is.

I'm one of the rare people that's had issues with every iphone with touch ID I've had...5s, 6+, SE, 7, 7+ and even the 8+. It was nothing major but it would fail on me a time or 2 daily. I work with my hands and often have cuts on my fingers so I'm sure that's why. So far I've had no issues at all with face ID

I’ve really been liking Face ID. The only bad part is that if it doesn’t recognize you the first time, you have to lock the phone again and tap the display again so it can rescan.

I'm pretty sure if you swipe up just like you would to open it it'll rescan without you having to lock it and re-wake it....

There are always pros and cons to any new technology.

Pros:
1. You can unlock the phone with either hand. TouchID allows for one fingerprint. With FaceID you can hold the phone in either hand and unlock it, so it doens't matter which pocket you place it in.

2. Faster unlocking. While it is only a few seconds FaceID is faster than TouchID because you do not need to adjust your hand to get the thumb over the scanner. You can look at the iPhone regardless of how it's being held and it unlocks.

Cons:
1. Sometimes it unlocks too fast. I'll look at the phone for the time and it unlocks.

2. I have the black (okay, space gray...but it's black) X. It's hard to tell which side is upright without the button. Sounds silly, but now I have to feel for the speaker holes or look for the ear hole.

Overall, it's a wash. There are pros and cons to both.
Actually Touch ID allows you to register up to a handful of fingers, literally five fingers. Also since the 6s, second generation Touch ID was lighting fast, faster than Face ID. And all you have to do is put your finger on the sensor, no sliding.

Face ID is at th exact speed more or less of first generation Touch ID (2013-2015)

Spot on!

Unsurprisingly I will be one of the few people to tell you Face ID isn’t perfect. Shocking, I know.

It doesn’t work as well when it’s sitting flat on my desk and to my side. I have to hover my head over instead of simply puttinf my finger on the phone. It also doesn’t work well when I’m just waking up and wanna check my phone while lying sideways and my face is half sunk into my pillow. Occasionally I will also be holding the phone at awkward angles to cause it to fail.

All of these situations are expected to not work with Face ID, but they are also situations where Touch ID have no problem with.

With all that said, Face ID is still an amazing piece of tech. When it works it’s just smooth, natural, and elegant. It also has additional benefits other than unlocking the phone. My favorite feature is how my messages are displayed on my lock screen when it recognizes my face, but hides the contents when someone else picks up my phone. Convenience features like this has a lot of potential and will make using the phone a more pleasant experience.

TL, DR; Face ID isn’t always better than Touch ID, but it has a lot of potential that makes it feel like an upgrade.
