Mine is still perfect, but then again it's only been out of the box for about 3 days. I'm still looking through case options, though I'm undecided about which route to go down.

I never had anything on the back of my original iPad but it's in pristine condition. However for the iPad 2 I've decided to use an Incipio Feather clear cover for the back. It's clear so still shows the colour of the back aluminium but it gives a better grip and protects the back. The only problem is that even though it's supposed to work with the smart cover there are no cut outs for the magnets so the cover doesn't stay on very well. I may look for something similar that works much better with the smart cover.

i just ordered a feather. how are you liking yours so far?

as for the smart cover, i sent them an email and they told me that a smart cover compatible feather was in development and should be available in a few weeks.

Preference

As always, skins and cases are always personal preference. I prefer leaving the device as nude as possible, especially when it comes to he sexiness of Apple devices. I personally, would rather behold the full appeal of the thing itself over a cheap, disposable plastic thing. There's no shame in going that route and risk a few scratches.

Personally I have an iPad 1 and go back and forth between completely naked and a dodocase. Experiment and find what you like the best.

iPad is too slippery for that. You need something on the back to keep it from slipping out of your hands when reading.

I don't have anything on the back but I always put it on a case or in a sleeve whenever i lay it on a table. Sometimes I use the smart as a stand or as the thing it sits on.

However, the other day I did get a nick on my screen which is upsetting. I installed a Crystal Film on the front, and I am slowly dealing with my OCD issues. LOL ;-)

i got ghost armor clear for the back (thank goodness). thing scratches so easy its a joke! i have nothing on the front of one and its so scratched up i am disgusted! i have target for that one 90 day return policy which i will use 4 sure! my second ipad2 ghost armor carbon fiber back and doesnt have a scratch on the front not sure why one is so bad and the other is perfect.

So whats a good case that will work with the smart cover? I'm in the UK so I don't want to have to pay a small fortune in p&p.:D

I stuck a Boduguardz on my iPad 2. It looks great, I actually like the back of my iPad 2 even more now. It makes it soo shiny looking! :D (it actually makes the back more grippy to hold too, which is good.)

The screen on the other hand... It looks rubbish lol, all misty looking. I'v had it on for at least 4 days now, and it's not looking like it's going to clear up. :(

On the plus side, it feels alot less stressful, while using my ipad. Now I don't have to worry about scratches. And luckily, when the iPad is turned on, you can't see the mistiness.

I use a sleeve shown here:

Gives great protection and works with smart cover attached, but I never use the smart cover much, so generally just use this sleeve by itself. Does not give protection if you dropped it, but does keep it free of scratched and scuffs...:D

scratches really easily.

I swapped mine out for backlight bleeding so this one is scratch free (for now.)

put on a screen protector on the front, and have a folio case for it. would rather have it pristeen for a few months until i dont care anymore :p

The "I don't want to scratch the back of my iPad but am willing to put some stupid ass cover on it" mentality cracks me up.

The only product from Apple that I've never owned is an iPod touch. The back scratches way to easily (I do have an iPod classic though) and it would drive me crazy, but other than that I feel like the iPhones, iPads and MacBooks have been built to be more resilient and for that I feel very confident not to stick them in cases.

After just one month with my iPad 2 and 10 months with my iPhone 4, yes, I have dropped them several times on various surfaces and neither have any scratches.

I agree with the quote above, and though some people want to protect their investments, I just don't get it why someone would spend so much for a product and then not enjoy them for what they are (no case makes me cringe more than the otterbox).

This thing is lovely with nothing on it. Right now, I just make sure it's in a dedicated pocket in the same bag I carry my laptop in. I have a treegloo case on the way, which I bought specifically because I can easily remove the iPad from it. The only reason I got a case at all was for functional angles and to be able to throw it in any bag without damage.

I see your point. I'm similar in this aspect. When I first got my iPod touch third generation model, I had a plastic case around it. Well, it's been over 1.5 years now and I just recently took off the plastic case to fully use the iPod touch in its original form. It made me wonder why I was covering up the iPod touch for all this time. Here's the thing: when we cover it up for fear of scratching it and never actually peek under that cover or use it without that cover, then what's the point of this form of protection since the cover is going to cover up the device any way it wouldn't matter if it were scratched OR not scratched! Right? Get my point?

Now, regarding using protective covers so that the device doesn't damage when it falls, I can see that. But only people who have jelly fingers would see use for that. I haven't dropped my iPod touch or MacBook Air in this fashion.

My iPad 2 is coming in today and while I got a SmartCover for it, I won't be getting any other cover for it. What I will get (or make of my own) is a sleeve to carry the iPad 2 in when it's being transported in a shoulder bag. Beyond that, I don't want any cover for it.

And regarding screen protectors, I used to use it for my iPod touch but have removed it since. Won't be getting one of those for the iPad 2 either.

I got a skin from Cases.com for $4.75. It's actually pretty good quality. I use the smart cover so I got a utility knife and cut out where it attaches to the iPad. I'm very satisfied with the results and now I don't have to worry about scratching up the back.

My wife uses the iPad on the granite counter top in our kitchen - so I went with a $2.00 solution that I bought at OSH - these are silicone cabinet stops.

No offense, but this is awful...

That may be true :) but it seems to work! You can still feel the beautiful Al back, does not add weight and seems to have kept the back unscratched for the few weeks that I have had it. You should try it - I think it is $2.49 for a set of 12 or so. I hated the iPad 1 cases and did not want anything that added extra weight or bulk.

I've had my iPad 1 for three months now. I have a ZaggMate case that covers the screen, but the back side is exposed.

The ZaggMate case is all kinds of scratched up, but the back of the iPad itself is flawless. Every once in a while, it will get some kind of smear or something, but it just wipes off. The iPad chassis is *VERY* resilient.

(Correction, I do have one VERY small scratch in the plastic Apple logo on the back. I only noticed it when cleaning finger prints with a microfiber cloth just now.)

The problem with those hard cases is eventually some random dirt gets inside the case and sits there causing scratches. A co-worker has a red plastic hard case on her macbook, she took it off awhile back to replace the hard drive and was shocked to see that her macbook was filthy and all sorts of scratched up on the inside of it.

If anything I'd put a wrap on it like the one from Zagg, then put it in a case. That way the metal is still protected but the case will help if you accidentally drop it.
