Anyone who's already picked this up, how's the movie experience? Particularly, the theater mode view in the Apple TV app (2d and 3d)?

Movie theatre mode is simply amazing. The audio changes depending on the seating you chose in the theatre and 2D, 3D both movies are great. Personally, this will deter me from going to the movies since I’m getting nearly same experience now at home.

How's your experience of the scale in Apple TV? Does it feel truly large, or similar to Bigscreen in Quest if you've ever tried it?

I use a 120” 2.35:1 screen but haven’t used another VR headset. It’s massive especially if you do front row. Literally need to turn your head. I prefer middle to back. Still 2-3x bigger than my screen…

Hope that helps.

Stupid question: where do you watch movies (and enable movie theater mode) on the VP? I'm guessing you have to subscribe to Disney+?

Varies by app. I’m using Apple TV+. You can choose between an experience and a theater. I’m guessing it’s similar for Max and Disney+ but I don’t have either app and don’t plan on getting them either.

I have the same size scope screen as you. Mostly interested in movie watching on this thing. Is it really as good? Can you watch any apple movie you own in there? Does it really feel like a theater??

Any other observations would be appreciated!

Any particular feelings of eye strain getting out of the device after 2 hours of movie watching? I assume it might be somewhat different than running through the device using your eyeballs as a controller.

It’s that good. I don’t own any movies on Apple so can’t answer that. As you know you lose some sharpness as you go bigger and this screen is huge. Feels a little less sharp, but I’ll never town a projector again after seeing this.

I could not agree more! I chose Floor Middle seating and it honestly felt like being in a theater.

Amazing. Theater mode is awesome, moving your seat around can make it feel like a giant theater. But watching a movie in the immersive spaces like Yosemite is also awesome. The screen itself looks tack sharp, and the colors are great.

My only complaint is that I hope that in the future we'll be able to have "semi-immersive" apps...or at least "widget apps" - when you are fully immersed, you can't check your phone, or open a random app, without exiting the immersive environment. So it is great for new movies where you want to be fully focused on the content, but less good for say, having a giant movie theater in the background while you work on something.

The big question is eye strain. The biggest advantage of a projector is that you are looking at light being reflected at a screen back at you. It's why you can go to an IMAX movie, sit close for hours without eye strain whereas with TVs or worse a headset the light is being directly beamed at your eyes. Obviously this effect is much great on a headset over any size TV because your eyeballs are inches from the light source.

Light is light. Photos are photons.

It doesn't matter whether it's reflecting off something or hitting your eyes directly from the thing firing out the photons.

In fact, one of the notable advantages of projectors is their reliance on reflected light. Projectors utilize surfaces to bounce light, creating a softer, less intense illumination. This characteristic can be advantageous for eye comfort as it minimizes the harshness of light. TVs, on the other hand, emit light directly from their screens, resulting in a more intense image and putting more strain on the viewer’s eyes. So, projectors are the clear winner in this round of comparison.

Light sources can be divided into two kinds based on the path taken to your eyes: direct and indirect light. Most of the light sources we encounter daily from the fluorescent lamps above your heads to the TV screens in your living rooms are direct light emitters. This means these items produce light and it is traveling directly to your eyes. Direct light sources are harsher on your eyes in comparison to indirect light. To illustrate, staring at a flashlight beam directly is a lot more uncomfortable than staring at that light bouncing off a wall. Projectors utilize reflected light, which is less invasive to your sight and reduces eyestrain and other negative effects of prolonged viewing.

Yes, projector screens actually are better for your eyes. Projectors are able to produce much larger images, which put less strain on your eyes. In addition to this, projectors reflect light while TVs emit it. Reflected light is easier on your eyes, keeping your eyes comfortable without the added strain created by emitted light.

Projector screens do not emit light. In fact, these screens reflect the image directed towards them from the projector.

This helps to greatly reduce the level of light being captured by your eyes and, therefore, reduces stress levels on your optic nerve. For many, this makes viewing an image or movie much more comfortable.

Can someone please explain how to get movie theater mode. I’m getting really frustrated. I don’t see it anywhere. I’m in the Apple TV app. What and how do I get this to work. Thanks.

Update: sorry I figured it out. Can’t delete comment for some reason.

Umm, no.

Just... no.
Wow. Are you going to tell Einstein or am I?

Please do update us all when you get your paper published in a scientific journal that disproves the fact that we see because photons enter through our pupils and are then focused onto our retinas by the cornea and lens, and that our retinas have photoreceptor neurons.

By all means have the last say, there are far more interesting discussions elsewhere to be had.

If any F1 fans are here, I'm interested in trying the late 1960s Grand Prix film on it. It was made in such an extreme widescreen that it always feels "small" on even a big TV.

Might be cool on Vision Pro! Sadly I think the iTunes copy of it is only 1080p.

I have only used Disney app. Anyone know how to change the environment? I only seem to have the Mountain.

From the home screen on the left, there are three tabs: Apps, People, Environments

Control Center only lets you change from day to night.
