I also had a problem with the 2600n on Mac Powerbook after installing drivers from the HP website. I had to uninstall the drivers and then install the Mac drivers from the included CD.

It now works fine.

Same Problem-ish

Hiya!

I was having a very similar problem when i upgraded to Tiger. Instead, every time i tried to add the printer in the printer utility, it would crash the utility app.
I tried some stuff out on a few different comps and here's what happened...

I had installed originally tiger on my old G4, although on a seperate partition, making it a new installation, though keeping user accounts. When i installed the driver, the printer appeared in the list, though when selecting it, crashed the utility.
I then booted up in Panther and tried to add the printer again. when it couldnt find the drivers (from the cd you got with the 2600n) i installed them from the cd. It recognized and added the printer no worries (after a couple tries).

I tested a print job, successfully, then booted up in tiger again. after doing the same thing, it let the printer work fine.

I installed the drivers onto the clean G5 iMac (bought with 10.4 already installed), successfully, although this time it went off without a single hitch. Which brought me to a conclusion...:
By installing a clean-slate version of the OS (panther or tiger) onto any HDD or partition, recognising and installing the drivers is a breeze. Its when you've upgraded you OS from panther to tiger, keeping your old user accounts and settings that's when you'll get problems.
I've been working on this for the past 5 or so hours! :):)
so if possible, boot from and install 10.3, install the drivers and do a test print. then go back into 10.4 and do the same. it should work after a while. It feels like as long as JUST ONE PART of the system could get it to work, the other OS' will follow in suite. This is how i put it onto my Tower G5.

Hope this sheds a little light on an otherwise s****y situation! ;)

P.S. I dont think it matters remotely whether or not you have a intel or ppc based mac. if this were the case, they probably wouldnt make seperate firmware updates for both mac and pc (as we are printing from both here at work). otherwise you'd have to install both from each mac & pc, which isnt the case.

HAPPY TROUBLESHOOTING! ;)

I'm having trouble with the drivers for an HP 2600n with my MacBook Pro. I migrated all my files from an iBook G4, which had been printing to the 2600n fine. However, now I can't get the MBP to recognize the same printer. I'm able to select it in my Bonjour list on my home network, but no driver comes up.

I've tried downloading and installing the universal driver from the HP website, but I always get a message that says "There were errors installing the software" and "Please try installing again."

I think the problem might be the old stuff that was migrated over from the iBook. Can anyone help me figure out what I need to delete to clear all the old driver info out?

Hi,

I got the printer working on a 13" MacBook running Mac OS X 10.4. Here's how...

Configuration:
Linksys BEFW11S4 WAP & Router
MacBook (13") 2.0 GHz
Mac OS X 10.4
HP Color LaserJet 2600n, printing via Ethernet

1. In System Preferences->Print & Fax, remove previous attempts at installing the printer.
2. Go to http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...iesId=446153&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=219
and get teh HP color LaserJet 2600n OS X Universal Binary Full Software Solution.
OR
Go to hp.com
Click Software and Driver Download
Click Printing and Multifunction
Click Printers
Click HP Color LaserJet Printers
Click HP Color LaserJet 2000 Printer series
Click HP Color LaserJet 2600n Printer
Click Mac OS X (NOT Mac OS X 10.<whatever>)
Follow the instructions above.

3. After you download it, install it.
4. Load System Preferences -> Print & Fax and add a printer. It should (theoretically) detect the printer via Bonjour. If not, add it. The driver will detect automatically.

If it doesn't detect automatically, you may have to manipulate it to get it installed somehow, but I didn't face this problem so I couldn't say how to correct it.
Awesome! It works!

2600n issues on my Powerbook G4

i know this is a bit off topic... but... same general area of frustration:

i having problems with my 2600n on my powerbook g4:

the printer continues to fall off my network!!

powerbook g4
Dlink wireless router
2600n

every time i want to print, i have to powercycle the printer. then i can print for about 5 minutes before the printer becomes unrecognizable by my laptop... in the printer queue, he queue message simply says "looking for printer..." (but never seems to find the printer). meanwhile, the printer status says "in use" ??

i have already taken the printer back to the store from which i brought it... and they gave me a new printer. that didn't help (it's doing the same thing.) so i know it's not the network card on the printer ;)

any ideas?

thanks,

shea

General warning to purchasers

I've had more than enough dealings with this printer. What we've determined at my business is that this printer is garbage (all 5 that we bought, in fact).

The firmware on the printer hangs frequently. When it does, it will respond to pings but does not accept print queries/jobs. The software driver on Windows looks like something from 1992 and crashes the client Windows printer spooler on 50% of the jobs you send to it. The printer is not compatible with Citrix and may crash the server print spooler even if no one prints to it. It is slightly better when using USB, but don't hold your breath. On OS X you can go with Ethernet but never, ever put it in a multiuser environment. I got one last May and it works perfectly fine, but I only use it about once a month with my Mac Pro at home and I don't mind the 8 pages per minute speed. The price tag was enticing but with all the flaws it has they might as well have priced it at $89 and sold it at Sam's Club.

Looking for printer: Found!

-Hi all,

My 2600n worked great in our home with three Macs on an Airport Extreme network since we bought it. However, a few weeks ago, I lost connection with it on my Powerbook G4, then a few days after that my wife lost it on her iBook G4. Deleted all 2600 printer settings, and tried to add it back with Printer Utility, but though the printer appears in the list as a Bonjour printer, the location is blank. And if you click Add anyway the utility freezes up. It did this on both the Powerbook and the iBook.

I tried plugging the 2600n into the Airport directly with a USB cable (previously it had been connected into a an ethernet hub), and that worked intermittently for a few days. Then it disappeared again and wouldn't come back.

I tried three things, and apparently one of them worked. The printer has worked now without a hitch for four or five days days.

1) I updated the firmware. HPs' website said that the new firmware is optional if the 2600n is at v. 20050610, but I installed it anyway. Didn't really fix anything at first. So then I tried ...

2) I noticed that our iMac, which was plugged directly into the same ethernet hub as the 2600n, had printer sharing on. I turned printer sharing off. Possibly the iMac was screwing things up.

3) At this point, my Powerbook found the 2600n again, but my wife's iBook couldn't. I tried this and that. Then I went to the Printer Setup utility on the Powerbook, selected the 2600n, then clicked "Utility" in the menu items. This gave me an http address for the 2600n. I wrote this down. Then on my wife's computer, where the 2600n shows up, but the location is left blank, I entered this address, and voila the iBook found the printer.

This last thing might have been a fluke. After all, I didn't have to do this on my Powerbook.

Anyway, I'd be really interested if either of these methods works for others.

i know this is a bit off topic... but... same general area of frustration:

what worked for me

Hi. I could not access a networked 2600n with my macbook pro. I installed the new intel drivers from the HP website, but was still unable to configure the printer driver through the printer browser (it did not show up under bonjour either). After entering the IP address, I was unable to locate the appropriate driver in the print using drop down menu. Auto select recommended a generic postscript driver (which doesn't work) and the 2600 was absent in the HP list. I chose More Printers->HP IP Printing->Manual and found the printer that way. Entering the IP address and pressing Connect identified the printer. I now can print to the 2600n. By the way, I also updated the firmware prior to doing this. However, I do not know if this is necessary.

HP Color Laser Jet 2600n on Mac OS X

For all of you out there that are looking for a solution to this unfortunate issue with HP... Follow this easy steps and enjoy full network printing from your handicapped 2600n

Download the firmware update from the hp site (If you have not done it before)

Plug your printer via USB to your computer and run the firmware update, it will ask you to turn your printer off and on again, then run the update. After that, install your driver.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...iesId=446153&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=219
You will find the latest driver here too...

Install

Remember... you will not find the PPD's in the primary printer list.

Once you get to the System preference pane "Print & Fax", you add a new printer and at the bottom of the window you will find a "More printers" button. (Mac OS 10.4.X)

A new drivers detected window will pop up, click "OK".

Choose HP IP Printing (Mac OS 10.3.X - 10.4.X)

Then add the IP number assigned to your printer.

As soon as you get this done... try printing and enjoy!!!
