Well, considering HP manufactures Ipods, I would be surprised if there was a problem :p

When you say "manufacture," do you mean "resell"? I don't profess to know everything there is to know about the iPod supply chain, but I am not aware that HP manufactures any iPods.

Even assuming HP DOES manufacture iPods, they would still do so by license from Apple.

One BIG problem with this design that I can see... if, like me, you keep your computer in any sort of shelving unit/cabinet, having the iPod dock on TOP of the computer may make it impossible for the computer to fit.
exactly what i was thinking.
Towers like are put on ground level or on the user's desk, maybe even in a cabinet. Making the iPod sit to low, to high impossible to connect.

Some sort of dock in the front of the computer (like, where the CD/DVD drives are) would make more sense to me.
Maybe a sliding out connector which puts the iPod in front of the case. Or a slot with 'caliber convertor' for the mini.

It is good the iPod is getting this backup from HP imo. I do hope it will spread X though :D

I would like to see some sort of slide in dock, like putting an eight-track in. that would be sweet. Good idea in general though. I doubt we will see it on any macs any time soon though.

YES YES YES. This is exactly what I've been wanting for my car. The problem with this sort of scheme is that Apple would have to standardize the form factor to some degree. The form factor has changed slightly with every generation of iPod. The iPod photo is different than the 4G iPod. The iPod mini is obviously smaller.

I really hoped Apple would standardize the form factor and turn the iPod into a capsule, but I don't think it's going to happen.

Interestingly, the article also said HP is basically changing the whole look of their entire line.

Eventually, their printers, laptops, monitors, and every desktop will have this new silvery-white look. (Because, according to HP, consumers prefer the lighter colors of computers...back to biege? :D)

Once again, Apple leads the way.

Now, when will Dell announce they are switching from black/grey to white?

isnt this saying "we diddnt do it because apple did it, we did it because our customers liked the way apple computers look, so well i guess we did do it because apple did it..."

Weird idea... won't work too well

I have a external CD burner atop my PC
My dad has our modem, an external HD...

LOL, thats what i thought in my head too.

at least they're using P4. as much as i dont like Windows, if i DID have a windows machine mine would be a Pentium 4. good to see them using intel instead of some dirty AMD processor. ho hum.

i just can imagine ANY company, be it Apple, HP or George Foreman making a computer that looks good with an iPod stuck in the top. i suppose you better pray that you dont lose the bits of plastic for the various iPod flavours too.

not for me thanks.

iPod as HP trojan horse.

Forbes.com has an article casting the iPod as a sort of trojan horse in the HP lineup. It makes sense that Apple's marketshare gains have been somewhat at the expense of HP. HP'd iPod deal sends a message to consumers that HP has no player better to sell than someone else's, and it's an easy jump for consumers to cut out the middle man.

New Press Release

And the following line was just announced with built in cup holders, key rings, change sorters, air cleaners, and even an easy bake oven!
Thats innovation people!

Actually, you can leave the dock off my mac, thanks.
I just think that the simplicity of the macs are better unhindered by all the "cool additions". Isn't that the concept behind not creating the iPod-PDA-Video-gaming-tuner?

Consider the gorgeous iMac G5 with a dock on top.

iTunes and the Media Center interface really don't get along. The music menu basically won't be used and the user will need to navigate to the standard XP desktop to go into iTunes. I think it will cause consumer confusion to not be able to use Media Player 10 with their music that will be played on their iPod unless it is only mp3s.

The "Apple + HP. Invent." story just gets weirder and weirder

The irony of it all is that the first computer to come with a built-in dock for an iPod is not made by Apple, though the Mac Mini almost did. Go figure.
Yep--the firewire connector board is still inside the Mac Mini case, near the rear, for an iPod dock that would have been built into the top. I think Apple made the right choice to leave it out: it would have made the Mini seem TOO targeted just at iPod owners, and might have limited its appeal. But maybe the feature will return to the Mini in future.

See the Mac Mini's hidden iPod dock connector here:
http://www.lbodnar.dsl.pipex.com/macmini/macmini_ipod.html

As for a dock on top of a tower... I wouldn't buy a Windows machine anyway, much less a cheap one (check out the reliability stats!) but I see nothing wrong with the option of a dock on top. It won't be for everyone, but nothing is.

Besides, anything to sell more iPods... and then in two years, more Macs :)

I am hoping for some decent printers and scanners that finally match the apple look and hopefully even feel (so no cheap silver sprayed plastic). HP's scanners and printers are the most decent designed already IMO but they are still bulky, poorly built and an insult to your Macintosh that shares the same desk.

It's not cool, but ...

You really think so? the only thing that looks cool in those pics on cnet is the ipod, the design of the computers is horrible.
it's not that bad. It's got an evolutionary stop gap feel as far as HP goes, no circular motherboards for this baby, just some regular square ones. ;)
After all HP seem to be in a bit of trouble... lost direction/marketshare and a CEO... and I'm sure it presses enough buttons in the PC world, but LOL re not following Apple...nearly everybody else does :D

How about something similar to the water and ice dispenser on a refridgerator? Just a little inset on the front of the machine. o_O I think it sounds pretty sexy and such. But not for a PC, for a MAC, so everything can match it and look good. And be nice and smooth without the ugly hinges (like the ones on THIS very iPod integrating PC deal) Blah. It sounds great to me actually. Maybe even a button above it to 'eject' the iPod from the system. If you're in a hurry or something.

The end of my rambling. :p

Now the only major problem with HP's new Pc's is they are way to big! Why can't any major computer maker other than Apple get it through their head that maybe people don't want a huge clunky piece of plastic stinking around.

Iggy :)

Then perhaps optional? Maybe the front plate can be somewhat of a bezel, using various connections behind it, so two panels really, one removable, the other with like slots, where you just add on your pieces, a jigsaw puzzle thing (THAT WOULD BE OPTIONAL!) to piece together your OWN media center. o_O That could be fun, lots.

There is a PC alternative to the Mini, it's just twice as much or more, and isn't quite as powerful if I'm not mistaken, with a 1.6 ghz p3 or something. And a max of 256 mb of DDR, if even DDR, I'm not sure.

Perhaps that's where HP should come in and integrate their own little suite on top of the preloaded Windows, which will also be on the restore discs so the default Windows isn't ever there. It makes sense, considering other manufacturers have done it, like with their custom printing things on top of the Windows OS.

Big is the new beautiful, don't you remember tower hifis, with nothing inside them. Don't forget most folks assume bigger is better value, got more bells and whistles etc

Probably that size cos it full of sound insulation to get it down to Mac mini sound levels ;)

I was so happy when i found out that Apple had decided to not include a built-in ipod dock on the mac mini.

The ipod dock really isn't very attractive unless it has an ipod sticking out of it. So if i had to look at my mac mini everyday and see a big ditch with a metal connector in it on the top of my mac-mini then i would be pretty upset.

Actually i would not have bought the mac mini if it had a built in ipod dock because its impossible to incorporate it into the simplistic design of the case without making it look ugly.

I think Apple reliezed what a bad idea the built-in dock was when they were trying to incorporate it into the mac-mini design so they handed it off to HP.

I'm sure HP was doing flips thinking that they had got one up on Apple, while Apple is just laughing at how stupid the top of their new HP case must look.
