Don't know if my own experience is helpful or not, but just wanna share it anyway; I have a C4385 (older model; but the wireless setup part should be similar) and for the 1st time setup on a PC/Mac you'll need to use a USB cable to connect to the printer itself to setup the networking, since by default the device wouldn't have the right IP address to start with; I do have a Linksys wireless router but I only use static IPs so I don't know if this would be any difference if using DHCP instead... and IMHO, you'd like to stick with static IP for the printer since you wouldn't want it to change to a different IP every once in a while when the leased one expires... ;)

This HP printer still doesn't work....

Just an Update --12/20/08:

I thought that I had this problem solved when I spoke with an HP guy (Ken) on 10/21/08 -- he gave me some IP settings and printer settings to set. And it seemed to work for a week or so (Yay!). But then it went back to permanent sleep mode. I'm really tired of pulling out the power plug on the back of the computer just to make it give me a printout.

Just spoke today to another nice HP guy (Lucas) who confirmed that HP is aware of this problem and "working on a fix". His understanding is that this is an HP - Mac issue. I can't confirm this since my Windows PCs and laptops in my home don't use this printer -- just my Mac's. So, I am looking to replace my new HP printer with one that works with a Mac. Putting this one out with the trash.

So, my strong recommendation, if you are a Mac user, do NOT buy this printer.

Very sorry I have to revive an old thread, but even with this HP C4580 printer that I got in november of 2008, it exhibits the same problems. I dealt with it until today where I found this post. I just tried out the above posted solution and will let you know if the problem comes back. Thanks for the help OP and everyone

Fix worked for another person. I just bought this printer in March of 09 and it still has all the glitches you have mentioned in this forum. Apparently a group of random forum-goers is smarter than the entire hp staff. Or they just don't care....

From one of those other guys

I have a desktop PC with an XP operating system. My HP C4580 is cabled to it. The reason I’m posting on this Mac site is to let you folks know I’m having the same problem. What I’m saying is, there may not be a communication error. It’s not your Mac and it’s not a wireless issue. This is ENTIRELY a printer problem.

First thing I did was look on HP’s Help menu. This was unproductive, to say no more. I found lots of nice pictures and text for spiffy new HP products but remarkably little in the way of actual help. Is anybody from HP reading this? Have I got your attention?

LESS HYPE, MORE HELP. Get your Help menu out of the hands of the marketing people and into the hands of tech people. <end of rant>

You should be able to go into system preferences and select printer and faxes. Then click the plus symbol and select the nework printer under the default tab.

I went there and then selected the printer and this is what says.

Printer Name: Photosmart C4500 Series; Kind: Bonjour

and below that it says:

Name: Photosmart C4500 Series
Location: This section is Blank

Just had HP support online for the last two hours. Turns out they have a patch that was just recently created for this. I downloaded it for my Vista operating system and hoping it takes care of the sleep problem. I noticed there is a patch for Mac's too. Here's the link. Good Luck!

I tried freepeacesweet's solution, and it seemed to work for a day or two, but then back to old problems.

When I first looked at this link, you could download the driver for Mac, but that's it. Now, there is a Firmware update (dated April 09) for Mac.... Hope this fixes the problem!!!!!

Looks like the firmware fixed the problem. I downloaded it 2 days ago and went to use the printer today and it worked.
