Apple wants palm. HP buys palm. Apple buys HP. Apple takes over the world.

In reality, I can't imagine who would want HP's PC business, although this is definitely a step to being bought.

But, I'm glad HP is retaining their software division since their new webOS is doing so well

webOS looks so much better than Android on a tablet! I really want to try it. I used Android on an Acer tablet and i hate it.

It makes sense to spin off the PC business. IBM was ahead of the curve there.

Giving up on WebOS hardware though so early is a huge surprise. I thought they would be in it for the long haul and had the patients to let it develop. I guess not.

Didn't Reubenstein start that ? Former Apple guy.

I once visited the Google, Apple, and HP campuses. Google's campus was very much alive, people everywhere, lots of interesting statues, slightly eccentric-looking buildings, not super well laid-out, but a nice place to be. Apple's campus had loads of people everywhere, but it was a much quieter campus, with more traditional-looking buildings, well laid out, very well executed. HP's campus was a couple of beige buildings, no sign of life around. Even the parking lot only had a couple cars in it. And this was during a weekday! Might explain a bit about why HP is the way it is

I do hope someone buys WebOS. Maybe Google will and replace Android with a good OS.

Actually I could see Samsung or HTC snapping them up. Either of those would have to be absolutely nuts not to have a back plan to Android.

This seems out of left field and sudden!

I guess sales are not even coming close on the hardware side for phone and tablets to what they expected?

Interesting. But hey... now Samsung, HTC, LG and others have another OS alternative to Android since Google is going to compete on the hardware and software side with Moogle phones and tablets. :p

I know with all of the M & A in the tech companies lately, Apple do something with that 76 BILLION IN CASH!:)

lol so what does this mean?? translation for the stupid please??:D

so they are no longer making PC's or what?

it will still make computers - just means they spin it off as its own company, if someone wants to but it - it would be easier to sell it

IBM got out of the laptop business by selling it to Lenovo back in the day

So after they botched the TouchPad launch by releasing it too early they just dump it? Sad end to Palm's legacy. I was really hoping HP would somehow make it work out even though the HP Palm merger was pretty much doomed from the start when you look at statements to the effect of them not caring about the handset business.

Bullcrap. Plain and simple.

Another one bites the dust. This marks the end of 2 acquisitions (Compaq and Palm).

I wonder who will buy HP's PC division? ASUS and Lenovo are potential buyers. The latter doesn't have an announced "Ultrabook" yet, and if it's going to be 40% of the market like Intel thinks, that would be a quick way in since HP already has one under development.

WebOS sounds like it's history to me. I guess even Manny Pacquiao couldn't save it. Microsoft Windows Phone looks to be the only alternative to Android and iOS right now.

I was thinking Lenovo - they have done well with IBMs old laptop business

Thanks.

Ahh, those were the "good olde days", when you can order a Gateway with an Intel Pentium III 667 MHz processor with a large fan.
There was a small renaissance with their FX notebooks and desktops in the late Core 2 era. They also had a rather affordable Core i7 920 desktop alongside Dell's Studio XPS 435MT. Acer controls Gateway and eMachines now.

Maybe Microsoft could buy the spun off HP laptop business and tablet business, along with the Nokia cellphone business and have a solid hdw/sfw base in portable devices to go up against Google/Motorola (I like the Moogle term coined by an earlier poster) and Apple.

It looks like the Apple model of hdw/sfw in one house is finally being seen as the right model.

Apple has nothing to offer the Enterprise sector. Support being the key gap in Apple's portfolio. Everything Apple now has is aimed at the consumer or very small business.

My last computer purchase was a HP server. Would be sorry to see those go.

We go for Dell servers at work, they are just cheaper and are always reliable. I do use an old Server at work though for my programming machine and have a HP laptop at home.

1)IBM hates HP and vice versa

2)IBM got out of the PC market a long time ago...and will never go back. IBM has been concentrating on software and services for over a decade and making bajillions of $$$ that way instead of computer manufacturing. IBM would never go back into that space.

Does Gerald Ratner work for HP now in some advisory role?

Your about to launch the Pre 3 smartphone, only to go on and announce before it's even shipping that your giving up on it ?

Madness.
