Whilst I wouldn't consider a HTC device again (the HTC Desire was soon 'dumped' when I realised how much I missed iPhone) I will hand it to HTC this is a pretty smart device with some decent specs.

is this similar to airfoil? It would be great if Apple could airplay to more than one speaker at a time. It drives me nuts that it can only be done through iTunes or AirFoil (Paid Service).

With the Mac, Apple wants to be standards compliant because they aren't the dominant player. If they create their own unique ports for the Mac, nobody would make accessories for it. With a standard part, anything compatible with PCs can be compatible with Macs. Apple benefits from this.

With iOS, Apple is the dominant player. They can create their own unique ports, and accessories will be made for it which will only be compatible with it.

With IOS, Apple is the number one individual phone maker.... but not the dominant platform. Android has a MUCH larger marketshare. (When Apple spins these things, they spin device maker, not platform....)

Having proprietary ports for IOS is only beneficial to Apple because they sell those "made for iPhone" licenses that most companies have just skipped in recent years because it's almost senseless to pay a fee to Apple which forces them to charge more when you can walk into a 5 Below and get the same accessories for less in many cases. Typically, only higher end accessories bother with this now.

The real current advantage is if you have an IOS device and invest heavily in both echo system and accessories, the cost of changing platforms increases. Your clock radio iPhone dock works with Android, but the device may not sit in it like the iPhone.... car chargers need repurchased, etc.

USB C would take IOS devices to a new level or performance and features with speed enhancements and potentially open up a world of new accessories..... if apple put more under the hood of IOS devices (like ram!).

While it could be beneficial to Apple Pay to have more devices using it, I doubt Apple would open that up to other manufacturers. It's tied too deeply to the secure enclave and Touch ID. It would be a nightmare for them if something went wrong at all with Apple Pay as consumers are adopting this newer technology. So allowing third parties seems out of the question.

Apple/HTC have cross licensing for a couple of years. Not surprising to see they have this feature that could help promote ApplyPay.

I will assume you meant to type "Apple Air Play", not "ApplyPay" :)

Good point about the cross license. It allows both Apple and HTC to use any utility patent of the other company's, with only a tiny handful of exceptions.

I don't think he meant to say Apple Pay, but in response to your post: Apple Pay is not tied to TouchId, since it can be used with a passcode alone.

Besides, it's just a host interface for the latest EMV contactless protocols. Apple didn't write any of the actual contactless payment code used in the Secure Element, the retailer's terminal, or the back end payment systems. So if anything went wrong during a contactless payment... and I can't imagine what that might be... the onus should be on the actual contactless payment players, not the simplistic UI host app.

That said, I agree that Apple is unlikely to port their payment host app, simply because it would take away a reason for some to buy an iPhone.

Earlier this morning, HTC announced its new smartphone, the HTC 10, revealing that the Android device will have the ability to wirelessly play audio through devices and speakers that support streaming via Apple's AirPlay feature (via SlashGear). In addition to AirPlay support, the basic specs of the phone include a 5.2-inch display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, 3,000 mAh battery for two full days of charge, and a USB Type-C port.

The addition of support for AirPlay makes the HTC 10 the first Android smartphone to work with Apple's audio and video streaming feature out of the box. AirPlay's inclusion into the HTC 10 also means that the Android device will be able to stream directly to the new Apple TV.

The move is a deliberate one by HTC, according to Darren Sng, vice president of product marketing for the company, as it plans to make its smartphones as feature rich as possible, even if it means support for third-party software. The company would even be open to including Apple Pay in its devices, if Apple ever opened up the mobile payments service to other manufacturers.
The HTC 10 is the company's flagship smartphone for 2016, coming on the heels of last year's HTC One M9 device. Anyone interested will be able to purchase the HTC 10 in May for an unlocked price of $699, and various, undisclosed carrier prices. The phone can be pre-ordered from HTC's website today, and in the United States users will be able to choose from black and silver color options, while other markets will include a third alternative of gold.

[doublepost=1460521443][/doublepost]This actually looks like a good phone by HTC.

I don't think Apple ever will but if they ever open Facetime on the Android platform that would be sweet! That's the only thing I'm missing now on my S7 Edge haha

The dramatic music and laser cutting at the beginning was so Apple, but without the drama or excitement of an Apple product video. The chap looked a little bit surprised and decided no to read "Here's a block of aluminium being turned into another ugly HTC phone!" from the auto-cue.

Interestingly it's a fully licensed version done with apple's blessing.

Source for that information? Do yo know if anyone else has a license for this too? I am looking for a AirPlay solution for my record player.

look at all the third party receivers/speakers etc that have AirPlay support ?
it's the real deal.

That's different, they can only receive AirPlay, this can send AirPlay.

2 day battery life, does it come with every Android feature disabled?
I can EASILY get 1.5+ days of standby on my 1.5yrs old HTC one m8. with all features enabled and push mail on multiple accounts. Something I WISH my 5S could do... no a chance.

Airplay has been reversed engineered and included in a few products...including as an input source for NewTek Tricaster, and a Conference Room product called Solstice.

If iMessage ever moved to another platform, I'd be gone. Tired of shoddy hardware from Apple.
This.
As for a phone, I guess for the most part I'd be ready to make at least a slow and transitional move away from Apple.
Or consider it at the very least.

The less dependent I am on Apple, the better. They keep pulling features, beloved applications and their quality assurance has gotten so worse there is strong consideration to pay half of what I pay Apple for the same experience basically.
Looking at the iPhone, apart from materials, I can't really say anymore their phone is unbeatable in terms of build quality.
Protruding camera? Why? But okay...
Replacement parts unobtainable (at least certified parts) → only have Apple fix a phone? Certainly not out of warranty at those prices!
Buttons? At least one button always fails. Home button or Power button.
Battery life? Well, their weird priorities and then to have the audacity of releasing such an awfully looking battery case... truly amazing!
...
The list goes on. Again, might as well pay less elsewhere for what is basically a comparable experience by now.
Android has come a long way.
Only thing I'd truly miss is local backups, but I know there are solutions for that as well.
Would prefer everything being in one place, but Apple themselves are already pulling apart their vertical integration, might as well chime in and get back to Windows-esque days of "everything has an application and a special service I need". meh

Samsung's Galaxy S7 and S7 edge have really good battery life. I do agree that there is no way that this phone will get 2 day battery life - but it seems like 2016 Android flagships (with the Snapdragon 820 chip) are going to get pretty solid battery life.

I am enticed by the 10. I've seen that the S7 Edge gets around 7 hours SoT and it has a 3600 mah battery so with the 10's 3000...HTC will have to really debloat. Thing is, I still get at least 7 hours a day SoT with my 2 year old iPhone 6.

Really? That is pretty awesome. I haven't heard of anyone approaching that kind of screen on time with the iPhone 6. The iPhone 6 Plus yes, but not the 6. Do you have any special settings/jailbreak tweaks?

One thing to consider is that 'usage' as shown on the iPhone in battery stats is not the same as screen on time. You probably know that though - but I have seen some people that don't.

My old iPhone 5 got about 24 hours worth of battery life with 4 hours of screen on time.

Sorry, I was thinking about Android. I meant usage. Usually 7 hours of usage per day. Which is still pretty good.

I dont really understand this... will this make it possible for instance to airplay from an ESPN Android app on the phone to an Apple TV? or what? That would be pretty cool..

And how would that symbol look.. the manner of airplay/casting is pretty different in IOS/Android, will there be an airplay icon in the casting devices choices or what.. seems strange
Will it work kinda like with the google Cast "app" in IOS, integrated into every app.. automatically then. the Android App makers will not have to integrate it into every app independently, cos then it will never happen...

thanks
