Looks nice. Have they unveiled pricing and launch / release dates ?

According to HTC's Ireland site, 749.00 €, though don't know release date. US deliveries are supposed to start 'early May' but I though I recall seeing it would be available sooner elsewhere. Don't quote me on it though.

I've been trying to firm up release date and while not a consensus, seems most are pointing to early May.

It's more or less what I expected but it'll be interesting to see how it shifts with that price against the competition.

If the fingerprint scanner really is a scanner rather than a button then that's a plus. No logo helps but what's with the chin?

Waiting for more camera reviews as the Dx0 mark score seems awfully well-timed . And after the Sony Z5 rating I'm less inclined to take them at their word... It seemed a touch slow to shoot in MKBHDs video.

The S7 Edge's size certainly is not preposterous considering some other phablets and while the S6 isn't in that category one can consider the latter a bit large versus the Edge's overall size with its nice display.

Yeah, true, but I don't like the screen edge. I prefer a flat screen. That's why I don't consider the S7e.

Considering exchange rates and the usual overseas pricing in comparison to US pricing, that's not to bad for $700 in the US. It's still expensive as hell though.

I applaud HTC for trying, but I don't think they will be able to compete with the S7. Still, it's nice for people to have choices.

Or the S7 Edge being what $750, that's insane, and the iPhone 6S Plus being like $800 LOL, who the F would pay those crazy price for a smartphone ? When the Nexus 6P is so much cheaper, and really near as good.

$650 seems to be the sweet spot for smartphones these days. Though I agree with Tig Bitties, with the lack of differences, it is become a harder pill to swallow annually. Nexus is way cheaper and specs are not that far off.

And not sure how you lump LG in with Samsung and iPhone. Huawei are far above them. We get it, you don't like HTC, whatever. But Samsung and Apple are in a totally different league in sales. And with only 7% growth expected this year in smartphone sales WW, no one below them is going to change that any time soon.

I lumped LG into the same conversation because LG is a household name in electronics, like Samsung/Apple, etc.

HTC hasn't been relevant in years. And they have the audacity to charge $699 for this thing? Good luck to them.

You can only charge a higher price if you are "relevant" brand? HTC will make budget phones this year to fill lower price gaps. This is their flagship. Right around the price (with warranty) that all other flagships are going for with the same or better specs. Including the almost year old iPhone 6.

I see reports that the htc a9 unlocked is supported on att volte / wifi calling, but nothing else.

I'm comparing apples to apples. A Sonata/Optima sells for less than the equivalent Accord/Camry.

Hyundai/Kia can't demand Toyota/Honda money for their products, just like an irrelevant company like HTC can't be asking Samsung/Apple prices for their flagship.

Those iPhone lines outside Apple stores, are not people paying $700+ cash out of pocket for a new iPhone. In the U.S 99% of them are carrier contracted or whatever the new finance options are. Nobody is actually paying the full retail price all upfront, they are just putting down $199 at the most, or on these "Jump on Demand" plans that cost just the tax of the phone to get the new model.

The day the U.S. carriers require you to pay the full amount upfront all at once for a new phone, is the day smartphone sales drop dramatically. Most people will not plop down a whopping $700 for a cell phone, no way not gonna happen in large numbers here in the States.

Off topic;

If I had to poll everyone I know, family, friends, coworkers, and client so mine. Let's say that's 200 people or so. With the vast majority very well off, most making well over $100k a year each. Out of those 200 people, I can count on one hand the number of people that would actually pay full price for a new smartphone. Most of them, 95%, stick with the same phone for 2 or 3 years, and only upgrade on their phone contracts timeline, or even after that, and wait for their phone to practically be broken, or stop working before they upgrade. Out of all of these people, who are financially well off, I don't think any of them would ever dream of paying $700 for a cell phone. And i think that's the pulse for most Americans and their smartphones.

Hyundai is branching off their Genesis luxury brand like Toyota did with Lexus a while back. While they may be competitive price-wise for the time being, you can bet that it'll go up in the not-too-distant future.

As more models are introduced (they're working on 6 new ones I believe) the amount of $60k+ models sold will keep climbing higher and higher.

You are moving goalposts too mate. They are not similar components between those cars. The Kia is cheaper because of things other than the brand.

Are you are saying that HTC should use cheaper components and make the price lower? Well they do that with other versions that will be released. They even just released a Lifestyle 10 today.

So don't have a flagship is your point? That to me is a poor strategy. Even if it is not a top seller, every manufacturer needs a flagship.

They're definitely in a tight spot. After all the costs are said and done, I wonder how much they're making off of each handset sold?
