Chinese companies usually steal technologies, design, even drawings and other things. Huawei might actually steal it from Apple's assemblers of trial units

I've yet to see anywhere that Huawei has done this in-house. Do you have any more information on that?

I ask because this kind of stuff has been in development for years, I think it's more likely Huawei either acquired a company (like Apple) or they've simply licensed out tech from the several companies working in this field.

I don't think many people here will have that information yet, and good point, they may have just acquired someone else's tech.

But maybe they didn't? Either way, they have something tangible to show. Pretty damned impressive if they're copying Apple.

What's stopping the new indie-industry now? I don't think tablets are revolutionary in that regard.

Besides, until phone/tablet cameras can compete with even current digital cinema cameras, I'd much rather "suffer" with a small monitor or run an external. And we're still a long way from that.

they have slowly been becoming a must-have for location scouting, pre-production/video moodboards, and for many, their primary amateur filmmaking device. seen the padcaster home-studio accessory? thing is awesome, and only going to be better with the new iPad's camera specs - and especially next year if they incorporate the dual lenses.

it may not be happening in your circle, but it doesn't mean its not happening. a phone/phablet simply isn't enough for some people if detail is the aim. subjective of course, but true.

I'm assuming this runs Android, but it isn't mentioned in either the MacRumors post or their press release...

It runs EMUI verison of Android. If I'm not mistaken, it's very similar (if not using the base of) MIUI which I personally like a lot. It's a typical chinese version of android; no app drawer, more personalized looking (theme choice) and tons of well incorporated settings and eco-system, it's really quite nice. It doesn't look quite as sterile as vanilla android, but looks are completely subjective.

their primary amateur filmmaking device.

I can definitely see it being useful as an ancillary device, but it still has a long way to go for primary usage. Unless you're ultra-low budget and you need one device to shoot and edit, maybe. The optics will get better, but it's still going to take some revolutionary breakthrough to get to even today's cinema camera type of quality.

seen the padcaster home-studio accessory?.

That actually seems like a solid option for ENG work, but other than that, I still don't see the demand for an all-in-one device that has limitations.

Ah I see, exactly like Samsung who had all these colours in use before Apple, so using your logic Apple used the exact same colours as Samsung and then everyone else copied Apple, because they don't know Samsung exists.
When Samsung introduced Gold Brown and Gold Pink phones in 2013, it was to copy the golden iPhone 5s and pink was a shade of the front glass, not new metal finish.

Only after Apple used the name Rose Gold for the iPhone 6s, Samsung started to use the same terminology to describe their own pathetic pink products.

The problem with Samsung (as with Microsoft) is not that they are copying Apple, but that they make bad copies of Apple products. Windows 1.0 even had a license to copy the Macintosh UI and they made a horrible mess out of it.

WOW, looks like they pretty much stole Apple's colour pallet.

Yeah, it's interesting how handheld devices have gone the way of any other fashion item.

Same as with automobile paint, and dress shirt or tie colors, when a shade gets popular, no one wants to lose a customer over lacking the same choices.

Like all color fads though, except for maybe greys, most of these will be seen as old hat pretty soon, and then come around again in a decade.

Unknown, although Huawei has been ramping up their R&D each year, and now spends more than Apple.

In 2015, Apple spent $8.1 billion on R&D, Huawei $9.2 billion.

Only after Apple used the name Rose Gold for the iPhone 6s, Samsung started to use the same terminology to describe their own pathetic pink products.

Nevertheless, should Apple have avoided pink/rose gold with a white band after Samsung had already done that combination the year before?

Of course not. Besides, neither Apple nor Samsung were the first to sell a rose gold + white smartwatch. That honor probably goes to the 2012 I'm Watch from Italy, with their precious metal collection that had options that could go north of $10,000:

Huawei spends much more as a percentage of revenue, of course (15% to 8.5%)
I understand that, but it doesn't answer my question. Has Huawei acquired a company to seed the R&D in this field (as Apple has a tendency of doing) or is this completely in house? If they've grown a completely in house operation in this field that's astounding to get this up and released so quickly. I know Apple's been working on this (again through acquisition then pumping R&D into it) for 2+ years at this point.

If Huawei has done it completely in house it means this company is nimble.

Not a bad looking phone, but the copying of Apple's current iPhone colors is quite blatant and lacking in imagination. But this isn't a new trend by any stretch. When the original iMac came out, many companies (from computers to grills) also started applying semi-translucent plastic to their products. *sigh*

People complain that Apple has stopped being revolutionary, but I think the big problem, at least with phones and tablets, is that there really isn't much more that can be done with the current technology. They've made them do nearly everything they can. Now they just make them better. And it appears cameras are where the biggest improvements will come. It's nice to see the dual camera in action. Here's hoping that Apple will make improvements on this.

The big issue for apple appearing not to innovate is that everyone copies aspects of it's trade dress and design. They've been ploughing their own furrow since day one and have been copied and licensed from windows to samsung and everyone in between.

I feel like the implementation of the dual camera is totally different to the tech apple acquired. There dual lens system will focus on noise performance, image quality and lens performance in different conditions. Sure there might be some extra gimmicks but i doubt apple will want to go the route of faking blur and depth of field in their version.

Didn't the htc one m8 have some sort of duel camera set up so you could take soft focus background shots, or have I just made that up?

Huawei needed just a few months since the rumors of Apple using two cameras in their phones to come up with something real. And I'm sure that insider info was the key factor behind those phones. Apple will release it (and again a single model of iPhone Pro) this autumn. It has to move faster. Once they switched to yearly upgrades of OS now they probably need to do the same for iPhones. It's impossible for Apple to keep new features/product secret anymore and be ahead of competition. So if they can't keep it secret then at least they should release it faster.

LOL

Why doesn't anyone believe that any other company in the world can't also innovate? Huawei is one of the biggest Chinese manufacturers, and they actually spend more money on research than Apple does. Apple may do it "right", but that doesn't mean that Huawei stole Apple's idea. In fact, I'm sure these "features" are pretty much passed around to all smartphone tech companies when it comes to major iterations (like how ideas get passed around silicon valley) - it just goes to show how much props Huawei should get for this, because this takes wayyy longer than just "months" to implement.

The reality is: Both companies had been working on the tech (most likely for over a year). Apple chooses to take longer to implement it, whether it be to implement it "properly", or to initiate the trickle down effect that they seem to be going for (meaning you'll see it in the iPhone 7+ and then in the iPhone 8 after that). Huawei released this by either developing it first, or finishing it more quickly (more efficient), or if you don't believe those two, then by apple enthusiast standards; it's just a gimmick.

If you ask me, what will likely be seen here is: Huawei introduces dual-camera set up, much better performance. Apple introduces dual-camera set up - much better performance, plus optical zoom and alter point of focus after capture gimmicks. It's worth noting that having this type of feature now rather than in 1-2 years later is commendable, since this is easily just better technology, and not only something that requires software to be "implemented well"

I was expecting it to just be a smartphone with two cameras cheaply thrown on. But, at least on the surface, they really seem to have thought through how to make use of these two cameras. As a photographer myself, it all sounds very impressive. How will the final product perform? That's the real question. It will be interesting to take a look at the photos produced by this thing. Hopefully such a camera isn't limited to only the Plus sized iPhones as this would be something everyone could benefit from.

The ability to shoot in high res black and white is actually more i portent for me than the ability to zoom

You are missing one main thing here, Apple is a follower now, they are behind in hardware terms in every category, pathetically trying to come up.with anything to stay relevant!! 3d touch anyone.. if the 6s was made by anyone else it wouldn't get a look in. FACT!!!

No, those are in no way the first gold phones Samsung made, plenty of posts in here showing that already. And they are not making poor copies in the slightest, they are not copying at all, it's like saying a Ford is a crappy poor copy of a Ferrari because they are both red!!!

When all the apologists have to argue their corner over is colour then jeez. Apple has sunk under the table in terms of buyers praising them for the products they make. Steve must be turning in his grave at what timmy is doing to the brand. But it's OK, they have just released the innovative SE!!! Talk about lame..

No, Ford is a crappy poor copy of Mercedes Benz, because Carl Benz invented the car.

You're right. I agree. We don't know yet.

My original post editing was lax. Fixed. Thanks!

Huawei could've just licensed it, too, like they might've done for force touch.

And yeah, Apple seems to prefer to buy an entire company instead of license :)

I think what the duel camera technology does is opens up a new area for them. They may be focusing on certain things at first, but I'm sure the technology will take them in lots of different directions. Possibly 3D technology and who knows what else.

hahahaha so by your logic Apple invented the mobile phone! I couldn't make it up, but you certainly have.

No, simply put no. Apple has lost almost every single patent law suit case it has raised against it's competition outside of America, America clearly supports it's own first no matter what the facts and evidence show. If you think everyone else is copying Apple then more fool you. Hell even America's Supreme Court is going to hear Samsung's appeal against the verdict Apple won in it's case:

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-court-apple-idUSKCN0WN1GF

And that's something a lot of people on here SWORE BLIND would never happen, it just shows how sucked in by Apple some people are.

Those samsungcopies examples are ridiculous. Are you telling us Apple invented round icons? Keyboards, seriously? Apple was years behind in terms of swipe keyboards and predictive text using email integration. Or is it claiming Samsung stole the colour scheme? TouchID is based on Authentec, which was already in other Android devices when Apple bought them. USB placement and earphones, no one cares. Gold phones have been around for years. A girl using the advertised product in an ad - really, did Apple invent that?
