Add me and my wife to the list of folks who've seen a spike in their data usage. Everytime we hand the phone to our 4-year old, we always turn off the cellular data. But in the past two months or so, we've gone over our data plan (happened only once before in the past year).

I am an AT&T user and have not seen any jump in cellular data usage. I would suspect some sort of app issue myself. Maybe one of those "social" apps (they all seem to want that hot button tag) that lets your friends know where you are at all times and lets you see where they are. Or a navigation app that was poorly written. Take a look at location services, think back to what got update on your app suite in the time frame things went bad.

Also, there is a cellular data counter in the General settings app for the phone. Reset that baby at the start of the day and check it thru out the day as you do things. Might give you a clue as to what is being used, and when it is being used.

I guess I will be real surprised if this does not turn out to be some poorly written app that is just chewing up data like crazy.

Well, I don't have any apps now that are different than I had when I was using 400MB per month. I'm taking your advice and resetting my usage data and tracking throughout the day on the phone.

Luckily I still have unlimited data, but we know now that it's not truly unlimited if they are going to slow my speeds after 3GB. If there is an issue locally with the software (unlikely as many others are experiencing this) it should be fixed when I upgrade to the new iPhone and set up as new next month.

I think Apple should take that $600 billion and buy a cell carrier in the US;)

From there they could simplify the messy subsidy, contract, and upgrade model that the carriers have while also investing in network improvements. I bet it's been discussed at some point.

Which "app" are you referring to here?

I posted it a few posts earlier. It's called data usage by sigterm. It's always been very accurate to my usage and AT&T server until now. Now AT&T is posting about 25% higher than the app shows.

So I had a nice long talk with an AT&T rep over the phone yesterday afternoon. I explained my situation of bizarrely increased data usage and even went so far as to present my rationale behind what appears to be a conspiracy for AT&T to push people toward higher GB data plans by artificially inflating their data usage. (It's a stretch, I know, but that's what this feels like).

She assured me that this was certainly not AT&T's policy and that there is no intention to push me out of my grandfathered unlimited data plan. She even explained how I could save money with the new mobile share plans, using it as an example as to why it's not in their best interest to get me off unlimited data (they'd be getting less money if I switched plans).

In the end, I'll be holding on to my unlimited data as long as possible so I don't have to "kilobyte-count" all month while trusting AT&T is tracking my usage honestly.

Data Usage Spike

Add me to the Iphone 4 users who have had a enormous spike in Data useage. For years I have underused my 200MB on my IPhone every month. This month, I got an email from ATT that I had gone over, wayyy over my 200MB. Two visits to ATT and one phone call got me nowhere. No answer as to why large chunks of Data is sent from my phone while I am sitting in my WIFI enabled house. No help at all. Just more charges every few days. To protect myself, I upgraded my data amount while I try to get an answer. ATT never acknowledges that this problem exists. I even took a print-out of internet forums with me, to no avail. Now I am trying to find our how to decipher the Incident ID codes in my Diagnostics and Usage page. Anyone know where to find these?

Same here. I almost never go over 1 gb. The only times I did was the first few months when I first got my 4S. This month, I nearly doubled my average from 0.75 to 1.5 gb. I'm not sure what's going on since I haven't done anything out of the normal (No Netflix movies, youtube, etc.) I'm probably going to go complain to ATT as I can't figure out why my usage is so high. Seems like several people have the same problem...
