In a sunny state of mind
The SDO science teams says: “The Sun unleashed an M-2 (medium-sized) solar flare with a substantial coronal mass ejection (CME) on June 7 that is visually spectacular. The large cloud of particles mushroomed up and fell back down looking as if it covered an area of almost half the solar surface.”

Apparently there was a huge solar flare this morning, check out the awesome video!

If this was directed energy, right at us, the results might be less than stellar. :)

It was a Medium sized flare, so obviously we as civilians didn't see squat, but I bet many foremen and engineers did do preparations at corresponding substations, generating stations and distribution centers in case of power spikes.

I was just reading about the damage that a once-in-a-hundred-years CME could wreak on our electrical grid...millions of people without power, major transformers down for months or years, fun stuff. July 2013 will be the peak of the solar activity cycle.

I wouldn't be surprised that the power grids around the world impose a mandatory blackout in certain periods to "isolate" the grids in case we have a solar max like what happened around 1859. That way, the damage to the power grid will be minimal.

it would be absolutely crazy if it happens. and terrifying.

also i can't help but think of Escape from L.A.

There wasn't much of a grid in 1859, but I understand that the solar event was enough to set telegraph machines on fire and shock the operators. Concerning when faced with the vastness and ubiquity of our electrical grid and devices today.

I find these Mega Flares interesting ... as you say, back in 1859 there was nothing really that could be affected by a huge Solar Flare.

Apparently they happen every 150 years or so ... this next one could have an impact.

That's why I've got lots of guns, thousands of rounds of ammo, and at least a years supply of SPAM...
