This is probably going to be the nail in the coffin for me to Cable TV in my house. I'll still be keeping cable internet but this is that last mile that I needed.

Is all of the content available to play through Apple TV? I was about to do the same (I have Hulu Plus via PS3) and noticed that most of the content that I watch wasn't available to stream on TV, only to the computer using the web browser player. You could, of course, run an HDMI from your computer to your TV, but that's not really ideal for me.

First, let me say WOOOOO HOOOOO! It has been my plan to cut cable as soon as the current season of True Blood ends. LOL. I already have an Apple TV and a Roku box, and I was planning to get an antenna for the local HD stations. I have Netflix and Hulu Plus, and I find that I watch very few cable shows, certainly not enough to justify the $200+ per month that I am spending on cable, HBO, two HD DVR boxes and two remotes.

New costs: $7.99 per month Hulu + and $8.24 (with tax) Netflix. Internet only - not sure, but definitely less than $200+ per month.

I'm in Richmond, Va and 'cut the cord' awhile back. Like most here, I'm running Netflix and other streaming options. When I did cut the cord, I removed the cable cord from the box and plugged it directly into the back of my HDTV. I now get all the major networks plus Discovery, NatGeo, TNT, NBATV and others free and in HD.
At first I thought I was 'stealing' cable, but after some web searching I found that certain channels have to be offered 'free' either through the cable or, as others have mentioned, over the air. I like the cable option better because I always had signal-dropout issues with the antenna.

Just my $.02.

So, just to be clear, you ended service with your cable company, but you are still able to get reception of all of your local channels through the cable? I like that option better than having to use an antenna, if it works!

Just enable the app store already

Seriously...I'm getting tired of the onesy, twosy crap. Just give us the app store ability already so that I can load up Pandora, MOG, etc. Once that's done, I can get rid of my Roku.

Thanks,
-K

Just tried out Hulu Plus for the first time a second ago. Not sold on it. I'll be cancelling it today.

Is it just me, but all content from the FX Network is not showing up?

Most of Hulu's content is restricted from streaming on your TV last I checked. It's only on PC with very limited availability on mobile players or TV. Even if you pay for Hulu Plus. Studios and content providers know that if you had access to everything for $8 a month, you'd ditch their service, so it won't ever happen. Not at that price, anyway.

Thats great but they still need NFL....whatever in order for most people to cut the cable with this. I'm ordering an Apple TV today, thanks to Hulu on it and Airplay with my MBA

This is the last thing to be solved for most people tied to cable... sports programming.

What about the rest of the world?

I'm glad to see Apple TV growing. It's got a grid UI for a reason; the blank spots are just waiting to be filled with apps and services. So much potential! Too bad this first spot goes to a US-only service.

For now I feel like I'm watching a mediocre movie made by good writers and good actors, waiting for it to get better. Cue the fanfare.

Not certain about the others, but it's a mistake that you are getting Discovery for free via "a cable" in the US. There were a few municipalities that had legacy deals but those are all gone. The KU band dish access is gone. In the UK and Germany, you can access DSC via free-to-air satellite still.

Welcome to the UK....

Congratulations. Sometimes UK knows how to make capitalism work better than us Americans. I think somewhere along the way, we lost sight of the underlying objective of capitalism to make things better for customers... trading that objective for making things really great for the very few. We used to fight hard against allowing 1 or 2 competitors to control a market but now we allow them to merge into as little as 1 supplier (for stuff like broadband).

We can easily check lists of dominant campaign fund contributors and see the names of those companies in that list- FOR BOTH POLITICAL PARTIES- but there is not enough care to do anything tangible about it. Thus a AT&T or Comcast or Verizon can load the campaign coffers of both parties and make up for those contributions times 1000 by charging higher prices in markets where there is no competition.

What you have there- lots of competitors for broadband (and lots of competitors for cellular)- is how it should be. It's also why your costs of such data suppliers can be much better than it is in the U.S. The trick is keeping that arrangement (of many competitors) instead of allowing them to merge into increasingly smaller numbers until there is just 1 or 2... at which point pricing will not be as sweet as it is now (nor ever again).

Hulu Plus and Netflix have about the same stuff... old series TV shows and movies. With Hulu Plus you still have to watch commercials.

So in reality it has no exclusive content?

Just faster access to the current season episodes, sprinkled with ads?
Yeah, kinda like what cable or satellite does for those same shows today, but for more than $8/month.

(No, it doesn't have everything cable or satellite has, but it has enough for me to save $52/month by dropping cable and subscribing to Hulu Plus.)

Not really. Hulu Plus has just about everything currently on TV. You might have to wait a day or week or month to get the current seasons, but pretty much everything is there. If you're on your computer watching it. On the TV? Not so much. The selection is as bad or worse than Amazon Prime and Netflix.

Hooray! Now I can stop buying content from Amazon (I have the roku player). I'm one of those annoying people who hate watching TV on a computer. I know there will still be some content that cannot be watched on a device but this is great news.

Question: People seem very upset that they have to watch commercials on Hulu Plus. Don't you also watch commercials if you subscribe to cable which is much more expensive? Granted, the content on Hulu is very lacking but you get what you pay for - in Hulu's case 7.99. If you don't want commercials, you can always buy individual episodes at the low, low price of 1.99/2.99 per episode (and yes, I'm being sarcastic here).

I thought this day would never come! Now bring HBO GO!

Only if we can sign up without having to have cable. I only watch like3 shows that aren't HBO, Showtime or broadcast and don't want to pay $50 a month for stuff I don't care about so I can pay another $40 for what I do want

This is super sweet! It's about time... Only few more needed subscription (like monthly) ONLY: Starz app ($4.99, please), HBO ($7.99, please) and Showtime ($4.99, please).

Add a 1 or even 2 to the front of those prices.

For many that would still be fine since its basically what they pay for those channels anyway. If they could drop the other $30-50 of their cable bill they are still ahead
