The Los Angeles Times reports that television streaming site Hulu is preparing to launch a "Hulu Plus" paid subscription service as soon as May 24th, pricing the service at $9.95 per month.
Under the proposal, Hulu would continue to provide for free the five most recent episodes of shows like Fox's "Glee," "ABC's "Lost" or NBC's "Saturday Night Live." But viewers who want to see additional episodes would pay $9.95 a month to access a more comprehensive selection, called Hulu Plus, these people said.
While the report does not specifically address the iPad, earlier reports have claimed that the company has been planning to roll out the subscription service for Apple's new tablet device as a means of testing the subscription model, suggesting that we may see an iPad version of Hulu on or soon after May 24th.

Sounds like a good idea to me. If you want to view the back catalog, you pay for it.. otherwise you can watch the current 5 or so shows free.

Doesn't that seem a little backwards? The recent episodes are the valuable ones and where they have a competitive advantage. I can netflix past episodes all I want.

if the selection is better than netflix instant and there is no ads every 3 mins of your tv show, then im all for it , i would gladly pay $9.99 for it

I find it hard to believe Hulu doesn't bring it enough money from ads... seriously who is actually going to pay for this service? This just promotes pirating more.

Well cable costs 5x more and you still get adds so I doubt Hulu Plus for 20% of the cost will be add free.

It's iPad subscription mania! Content providers may be going to the well too often. Get richer quick  People are likely only going to buy a few inexpensive subscriptions.

My Netflix is less expensive than that and it has all the shows I watch instant pretty much. Even just having The Office and LOST is a clincher for Netflix.

Also, Netflix is ad-free.

It'll all probably be tied in on an account basis. One account on all devices perhaps?

I hope it will be for all devices. I'll do anything to finally cut the cable TV. My "Triple Play" is over and their costs for staying loyal to them is a stab in the back, not to mention rental fees for the boxes and remotes, FCC surcharges, etc.

$10 a month for all-you-can-eat episodes on TV? The only thing missing are live shows like "The Tonight Show," but I guess I can deal with ATSC over the air.

You're probably right, which is a shame. They're gonna have to take the 'Netflix account' approach if they want it to work. I can log into my Netflix account on my Mac and my Playstation. This would have to work like that before I even thought about it.

So long as the paid content can be viewed on more than one device.
If I'm shelling out $10/mo for access via my iPad, my wife better be able to watch on her MacBook too.

I can't stomach >$60/mo for cable/satellite TV, but a good buffet of shows via Internet for $10 - I'm there!

...while users of other devices will keep on enjoying it for free via Flash?

EDIT: ah sorry this is about Hulu Plus (as in new service)
