Humane, a tech startup run by former Apple designer Imran Chaudhri
Don’t know if statement is supposed to shame Bethany or give her credit.A brief note--Humane was co-founded and is run by a woman and a man: Bethany Bongiorno and Imran Chaudhri. Both are ex-Apple.

Honestly this is just an Apple Watch with fewer features in a much less convenient form factor. If the AI is good they might have something there but when compared to Siri the bar is not high. Overall seems like a prototype that should have stayed a prototype but was brought to market because it's "AI" so it attracted some VC that missed out on OpenAI / ChatGPT.I give them credit for trying something out of the box. If it can actually perform like they say it can, it can have its uses. Many people are tired of being locked to their smartphones. The laser display interface seems pretty cool.
Agreed. I think people are too negative. Companies like this are looking for what's next after the 'thin piece of glass' format phone. Apple is heading down the Apple Watch/Apple Vision path, but that doesn't mean it's the correct path. I expect we'll see a lot of interesting ideas coming out as AI gets better and hardware continues to get smaller. The general attitude on this thread “No wireless, less space than a Nomad. Lame.”
I watched that episode last night. 😵💫Is it supposed to work like the STAR TREK: DISCOVERY 32nd Century Starfleet Tricombadge?

I can download an offline map app and launch it with a tap of a button? And how is that any different than a phone?

Re: the personal speaker, I have a sneaking suspicion that “bubble of sound” means “annoy the people next to you on the subway with crappy audio coming from whatever crappy speaker they could fit into it”.Interesting concept, but ultimately might be too niche. It might successfully compete with smartphones if tech was more advanced (assuming that is the goal), but I don’t think we’re even near to where it would need to be yet. The AI would have to be insanely good—basically like Jarvis or Her—to come close to completely replacing the need for a traditional screen. Also “personic speaker” that creates a bubble of sound? How is that physically possible? Of course, one could just use something like an AirPod for sound anyway. The other issue is that having to speak text to the device is not always practical. Maybe there could eventually be a hand gesture system to input text.
Still, pretty innovative and cool. With the ever decreasing number of small size phone options these days, if the tech was sufficient I would heavily consider moving over to one of these.
Meaningless buzz words to pad the product description. “User serviceable” or “reserviceable” would work just as well, but it wouldn’t get the buzzword clicks.Swap the battery over when it runs out for "perpetual power". WTF does that mean?!
Oh totally agree with that but I was commenting more on the reliance on cell/wifi for directions component as I'd HOPE they would factor in for that scenario by allowing downloadable maps/directions.I can download an offline map app and launch it with a tap of a button?
I can watch a full length movie while on a long subway ride?
I can play games?
I can do dozens of other things?
And the pathetic thing about that is that Wolfram Alpha or any number of other knowledge engines would tell you the correct answer. Or they could have actually done the calculations, eclipses are super easy to calculate.I agree. It was the actual announcement itself that struck me as especially amateurish.
This screen capture really captures much of the problem with it. Even the founders seemed bored by it.

As for the product, there are some interesting things about it that might be useful to some people.
But the name is terrible. Was ‘ai pin’ really the best they could come up with.
Feels like the announcement being terrible and the name being awful as though they have a really bad marketing team.
As an aside, the whole bit about where the next eclipse will be… it got it completely wrong. The main functionality of this thing relying on LLMs that regularly get stuff incorrect is a dubious proposition.
I’d be tempted to use it on people who listen to music on one of these things in public5 months? Must be nice.
Your AI laser would be VERY busy here in NYC.
I have no idea if their voice commands are processed locally but if not, downloadable maps might not even be possible.Oh totally agree with that but I was commenting more on the reliance on cell/wifi for directions component as I'd HOPE they would factor in for that scenario by allowing downloadable maps/directions.
EDIT: and if you need a full length movie for a subway ride, I am sorry for your commute.
