Oh, I'm sorry, how could I have mistaken this scorn laden comment as anything other than a heartfelt search for the truth????? ;)   :apple:

If you're going to be a judgemental CB, as least have the testicular fortitude to own up to it, and don't try to play the innocent card when someone calls a spade a spade!

Perhaps you should check the thread title and then mellow out.

this is getting dangerously close to a flame war.

cool off guys.

I guess no one told your sister that one of the disadvantages to getting an SUV is that they are more prone to rolling over than cars are.

Lethal

No, she knew that going into the purchase, but she figured that if she were to roll she wanted the space to feel more secure. (It didn't make sense to me then, but then I've also never been through the experience of being rolled.) Since she was going to have an SUV either way for other things (i.e. for the cargo-toting and for the off-roading that she has done along with the camping) she wanted one where she felt safer.

Because cars can't haul around our fat asses. :p

Seriously, my family has owned 2 Suburbans. We use it for its intended purpose. People hauling, cargo, and towing. While we don't tow all the time with it, the cargo capacity of the Suburban has become very useful. My mom had hip replacement and the hospital was delivering a bed to our home. We just had that horrible snow/ice storm 2 weeks ago. The box truck couldn't get up the driveway due to us not able to clear it since it was so frozen. Got in the Suburban and drove it down and put all the bed pieces and mattress in the back and got it at my house all in one trip. I do agree though if you're not going to use a Hummer, Jeep, or any SUV for its intended purposes please do the world a favor and buy a car or a station wagon. Or at least buy a Crossover SUV which is more fuel efficient.

I don't see why SUV's get such a bad rap.

How many people do you know with pickup trucks that seldom put stuff in their beds. I know quite a few. And guess what, pickup trucks typically get a little less fuel economy because of the bad aerodynamics (bed with tailgate up).

My friends mom has a Toyota Sienna gets on average 18-19 MPG. How many miles per gallon does my sisters Grand Cherokee get? 18-19 MPG. How many MPG does a 4Runner, Explorer, Honda Pilot, Murano, get? You tell me. Minivans fuel economy isn't necessarily all that much better than an SUV.

Here out in the northern woods of Connecticut, we get significant snow fall. I live on a private road so we have to pay the town to plow it. Because I live in the outskirts of town, and it not a very populated area of it, it gets plowed last and when it is plowed they do a crappy job. Frankly sedans don''t have the ground clearance to make it through the snow. Additionally, if they don't have AWD getting up hills is difficult, and my area is som what hilly. Additionally, people that tow things- campers, boats, w/e need something with a big enough engine to tow it.

2WD SUV's are pointless- buy a hatchback. If you don't live in a place where it snows you don't need an SUV.

Not all sedans have that great of fuel economy either.

------
My family has had 3 suburban. My dad loved them because you could fit anything it in. 8 People, 2x4's, sheet rock, big pieces of plywood, carpets, he fit a snow blower in one time, mattresses. When we went places my sister and I each had our own row of seats.

Right now my family has 3 SUVs and 1 Sedan. We're looking into buying an SUV for me.

----
You cannot deny you feel more comfortable being higher up on the road, you can see so much more.

Does it really matter what other people drive. You make your own decisions. SUV drivers have the right to drive them.

This debate has been drilled so many times. There is no right answer. There is nothing that can be done about it either. Why fight.

I totaled a Buick by rolling it... after that I got a Le Baron (convertible).

I dont have a problem with SUV's that are being used as big cargo carrying vehicles, its just the 9 out of 10 times I see a single person in it.

On the highway, I've been "boxed" in by SUVs once. It was cool cause I felt "protected" like I was being escorted by bodyguards yet scary at the same time,. There was basically eight SUVs in a box formation (you get the idea).

Anyways, people with SUVs should learn how to park too!

Well some people might not be able to afford a car and an SUV. You can't constantly be driving with your car at full capacity- whether people, cargo, or towing something.

I have been in a situation like that but with buses near the cities main bus terminal.

but if the frequency that I see is about 1 of 10 using the SUV instead of a smaller vehicle, then that means people need/desire it at most 10% of them using it. Not a very smart purchase.

We live in a free society. Those that choose to spend the money on a SUV and increased fuel costs, more power to them. It doesn't matter whether they fill up the seats or drive by themselves. It is their hard earned money to spend as they see fit.

Some folks spend tons of money on a Porsche or a Ferrari. Who cares if it makes them happy. :)

Sure she feels safe inside the tank, but what about the other drivers on the road? What happens when something that obnoxiously large is involved in an accident with say, a Honda Civic?

:p

WHy woud someone drive a Honda Civic?? That might be a better question.

Ooooo, you're just adrip with moral superiority!!!!

Which is a damn good reason not to buy a Honda Civic!

And what is the mentality of someone who would burn the electricity to fire up a computer and go online to be judgemental about other peoples mentalities???!!!

I agree. Heck, my neighbor spent $80,000, thats right $80,000 redoing his 3 year old living room- ONE room. He put in Brazilian Cherry floors, mahogany wainscoting , mahogany built in bookshelfs, and one of those fancy ornate ceilings. Thats just the carpentry. One of my parents friends companies did the work. Would I ever spend $80,000 on one room in my house. No.

People have different values. Some people would rather buy a new benz then pay for their kids college bills. Some people would rather have a nice house and crappy cars, or visa versa.
