"This dataset is old and appears to have information obtained before we made changes last year to remove people's ability to find others using their phone numbers," the spokesperson said. "The dataset has been taken down and we have seen no evidence that Facebook accounts were compromised."

So why does FB Messenger add new people when all i've only got their phone number?

Absolute BS.

Plus a dataset isn't truly old unless all of the data within it is out of date, especially on a single user PII basis.

Remember when everybody's landline was listed in the phonebook? Did that ruin society?
What kind of a straw man BS argument is this? You could not have made a worse comparison. A phonebook next to Facebook? Seriously?

When did a phonebook ever track and log every location you've been to?

When did a phonebook ever interfere in an election compromising democracy as we know it?

When did a phonebook get hacked and let someone view every piece of private information about you?

When did a phonebook try to create a new form of currency?

When has your phonebook ever asked for your bank account info?

When did a phonebook say "We move fast and break things."?

When has a phonebook ever been used as a propaganda tool?

When has a phonebook ever kept a secret profile of you that it scrapes together from everyone else that you know?

When did a phonebook ever coined the term "friendly fraud" and encouraged developers to try to extort money from children?

When has your phonebook ever acted as a VPN to spy on every website you visit?

When has a phonebook ever logged the history of your calls and text messages?

When has a phonebook ever allowed large corporations to read our private messages without us even knowing?

When has a phonebook ever prioritized dangerous hate speech, conspiracies, fake news and tragedies to increase engagement while encouraging an atmosphere of drama, hate and division?

I could go on and on for days. You're wrong! You're so incredibly wrong that it's unbelievable that someone would take up a position like this unless they actually worked for Facebook and were benefiting financially and drinking the Kool-Aid. Even most people who still use Facebook agree that they don't like the platform and that they're doing a lot of bad things but keep using it because they want to stay connected to far flung friends and family.

Bottom line is that Facebook preys on the love that people have for each other to make money and turn us against each other. They are evil incarnate and should be heavily regulated and split up—if not having many of their business practices outlawed entirely! The future of our society depends on this—of that I am one-hundred percent certain.

This is an article about a security shortcoming and the significance of the data that was stolen—not Facebook's dishonesty and exploits. The OP and myself think the data wasn't compromising. It wasn't linked to more valuable information. The OP compared a phonebook's personal data set to the data set that was stolen from Facebook. They are similar data sets. Historically, those personal details have been public record. Their significance didn't make people vulnerable for many decades. If that's changed, then speak to that.

The OP didn't compare the phone company to Facebook, but I'm glad you did because it illustrates that laws and consequences—not TOS's and CEO assurances—are needed to protect us from manipulative businesses rather than from data collection.

If Apple really cared about their user's data privacy, they should ban Facebook from the iOS ecosystem. When my iphone talks to another iphone with apps like FB, it is undermining data privacy on my iphone as well because of modern communications.

If that happens, I'll finally be able to buy me a nice iMac Pro
[doublepost=1567729005][/doublepost]That's the reason I never add my real phone number to these web sites like Facebook. Here is a tip, whenever you sign up on this web sites, try to use VPN, if you dont, they will track you down to the block you live.

And I'm locked out of my Instagram account because I refuse to give them a mobile phone number that they insist is to enhance security.

You like using the "straw man" aurgument don't you?
The article is about the fact that PHONE NUMBERS WERE LEAKED
I pointed out that back in the day phone numbers were a matter of PUBLIC record (and they were in the phone book)
but then you got your panties in a twist and went off in a rant about how you don't like Facebook (good for you tough guy......)

Clearly in my OP I was talking about Facebook in aggregate and how everything they are doing is leading to the downfall of our society. Their response was a diversion from the greater topic at hand. This is just yet another case of their mismanagement and terrible business practices to throw onto their list of offenses against society. They responded to me—not to the article. If you take any single Facebook offense in isolation it doesn't look horrific. It's everything, when taken together, that makes one realize they are ruining our society. We can't just give them a pass every time. My account has been closed for 9 years and there hasn't been a single day that I have missed it.

See what I just posted above. That's exactly what you did—using an argument that doesn't actually refute my argument to try to steer the conversation in a direction that makes FaceBook look more innocent.

I do not need to make Facebook more innocent. If people are (somehow) afraid of Facebook THEN STOP USING FACEBOOK AND IT'S SERVICES!! no-one is forcing you and people who cry foul about Facebook are secretly in love with the service. (oh it's a love hate affair)

Facebook keeps landing in hot water.

...except your friends want you do.. and convenience thrives. When was the last time people tied their own shoes? I bet robots will make it better for them.
