Facebook's wanton disregard for its users' privacy is appalling. I deleted my Facebook and Instagram accounts last year and am much happier and feel much more secure for it.

Are you sure your data was actually "deleted", or just marked as deleted? The big question...

Well the huge fine didn't work, maybe $ucherberg would enjoy a little jail time. I'm surre he would be the butt of the day.

Fine of $10,000 per leaked number seems reasonable to me

You dont seem to understand.

Phone numbers were searchable, and hackers made software that did lots of searches.

Just type in random phone #, see what name pops up, and repeat. Simple.

Not illegal, but demonstrates lack of forethought. And naivety of pretty much the whole world.

Ahhh the times when internet was dumb...
Not it got smart and people got dumber... I would never add my phone number to FB or any social media.

FB is the a platform which really disgusts me. The only reason I am keeping it is because of some friends and relatives using it in other countries.

I manage a few Facebook accounts for clients and they recently forced me to supply a mobile number or I would lose the ability to manage the pages. Their excuse was it was for security, but seems like a joke after this.

The scariest part about this is not Facebook, but the 100's of companies that have our data without the level and quantity of security engineers as Facebook, Google, Amazon and others. I hope no one thinks banks, insurance companies, medical companies, and others have the best security engineers or even those on the second or third tier or worse. The scary reality is them thinking no one will want their data or that they are 100% protected.

So true. Think of all the companies that offer something "free" if you text them. And how many people fall for it? A lot, im sure.

And how many companies urge you to download their app? Kind of the same thing. Or just "free" apps in general. We all know it isnt actuay free? We've figured that out by now, right?

Do people not recall that the phone companies used to print directories that showed the name, address, and phone number of every customer? Somehow, those who lived at the time, were not compromised by it. So why are folks outraged when those details aren't guarded since anonymity isn't a facet of Facebook's purpose.

Is there an phone answering service that could furnish a phone #?

Well, they probably wouldnt allow that.....

This doesn’t make any sense.

Because the cell phone itself is a security risk. And people believe cell #s are private, which isnt completely true.

That money would just go to the government to spent on subsidies, not for you and I.
You're right that money would just go to subsidise companies that don't benefit you, me, or anyone else.

Thats 4.19 trillion.
Which still isn't enough to remove the stain..maybe 4 trillion and 7 or so decades in prison for those in charge
[doublepost=1567639440][/doublepost]
Your damages are?
Doesn't matter if going forward facebook and it's subsidiaries no longer exist...Maybe that will instill some fear in similiar companies.

I think this is half true.

No, you can’t protect yourself completely, certainly not from a skilled attacker. But you can do common-sense things - like not putting your phone number on a public platform known for terrible user security - that make you less of a low-hanging fruit for people just looking for an easy victim. Similar to home security — a dog and good deadbolts won’t stop a skilled burglar who really wants to target you specifically, but you’re a lot more likely to discourage the unsophisticated burglar looking for a fast score than a guy who leaves his door wide open when he leaves the house.

I think the other part of the problem is that people set up two factor auth with their phone numbers thinking they were actually making themselves safer online. Then FB goes and uses those 2FA numbers for targeted ads. smdh!

When are people going to understand that FB is not their friend?
I don't use and never will use FB.
I stay off social media as a rule.

The unintended consequences of 'get big fast'. "Security? We're too busy for that. We'll just pay some chump change fine - about a nanosecond of ad revenue - and go about our corrupt way. And once or twice a year go to DC and testify in front of a bunch of clueless pols who just want to get on TV for their reelection - which we'll donate to to make sure no real legislation ever comes."

Until the fines become so big (10% or more of a year's gross revenues - not profit) that they really affect their bottom line, nothing will change.

This doesn’t make any sense.
To a tiny extent - it's true there were boiler rooms in the 80s and before that did cold call people trying to scam them.

But it's ridiculous given Zuck's lies over the years about how concerned they are about security and their 'pivot' to a privacy company a few months ago. Zuck is a sociopath - he stole the idea the Twins came up with and now will do anything for a clicks/money.
